The Sun of Words Excerpts from Aber ich lebe nur von den Zwischenräumen, an interview between Herbert Gamper and Peter Handke Wednesday April 9th to Saturday April 12th, 1986 On the morning of April 9th, 1986, it was an unusually warm day with the föhn wind blowing, and I met Peter Handke in front of the house where he was living on the Mönchsberg. He first lead me up to the tower, from where one can see down to the southern parts of Salzburg, over the plains and towards the mountains (the Untersberg and the Staufen). I asked him about the Morzger forest, whose southern extremities were visible, and about the nearby area where Loser, the protagonist of Across, lived. He asked whether these settings interested me, and this was what determined the first question I asked after we had gone down to sit at the small table by the well, in the tree-shadows, and I had taken the final, inevitable step, so that the game could begin, and switched on the tape recorder. We regretted that the singing of the chaffinches and the titmice would not be transcribed to paper; again and again it seemed to me ridiculous to pose a question in the middle of this concert. I told of a visit with Thomas Bernhard, many years ago, when, without my asking, he showed me the offices of the lawyer Moro (from the story Ungenach) in Gmunden, as well as the fallen trees infested with bark beetles at the edge of his land that had been reimagined as the General’s forest from the play Die Jagdgesellschaft. -

While the German language signified intellectual independence and freedom of self-definition (against one‘s roots) for Kertész before the Holocaust, he notes (based on his engagement with fellow writer Jean Améry) that writing in German created severe difficulties in the post-war era. Using the examples of Hilde Spiel and Friedrich Torberg, this article explores this notion and asks how the loss of language experienced by Holocaust survivors impacted on these two Austrian-Jewish writers. The article argues that, while the works of Spiel and Torberg are haunted by the Shoah, the two writers do not write in the post-Auschwitz language that Kertész delineates in his essays, but are instead shaped by the exile experience of both writers. At the same time though, Kertész‘ concept seems to be haunted by exile, as his reception of Jean Améry‘s works, which form the basis of his linguistic genealogies, shows an inability to integrate the experience of exile. -

COMEDY, COLLUSION, AND EXCLUSION ELFRIEDE JELINEK AND FRANZ NOVOTNY’S DIE AUSGE- SPERRTEN Literary history places Elfriede Jelinek at the head of a generation deemed to have made the transition from ‘High Priests to Desecrators’,1 reigning as the ‘Nestbeschmutzer’ par excellence. Along with Peter Handke and Thomas Bernhard, she is considered to have introduced an element of dissent into Austrian public discourse, ‘stubbornly occupying a position of difference from within a largely homogeneous cultural sphere’.2 Dagmar Lorenz argues that this level of political engagement is a phenomenon specific to German- language writers and appears inconceivable to an Anglo-American audience. In a special issue of New German Critique on the socio-political role of Aus- trian authors, she notes that ‘their opinions are heard and taken seriously, and they take part in shaping public opinion and politics’.3 The writers’ sphere of influence far exceeds their (often limited) readership, and column inches dedicated to controversial Austrian intellectuals stretch beyond the confines of the ‘Feuilleton’.4 The very public oppositional role of authors such as Jelinek, Robert Me- nasse and Doron Rabinovici reached fever pitch in 1999/2000 following the establishment of the ‘schwarz-blaue Koalition’, which enabled Jörg Haider’s populist right-wing ‘Freedom Party’ (FPÖ) to form a government with the centre-right ÖVP. In the months following the election, large groups of pro- testers took to the streets of Vienna as part of the so-called ‘Thursday dem- onstrations’. Theological Trends POETRY, POETICS AND THE SPIRITUAL LIFE Robert E. Doud Y THOUGHTS HERE have mostly to do with appreciating the M dynamics of theology and spirituality as analogous to the dynamics of poetry. They flow from meditations on the poetic ideas of the philosopher Martin Heidegger (1889–1976), and they reflect some aspects of the theology of Karl Rahner (1904–1984) as well. Poetics is the theory of poetry; and it is connected with philosophical issues concerning language, expression and communication as basic prerogatives and possibilities of human beings. For Heidegger, poetry is not a late-emerging use of language to embellish direct expression, but rather constitutes the original basis of language in the way humans complete the natural world by giving things names and descriptions. Heidegger saw poetic or meditative thought as the chief prerogative of the human mind and the chief means of finding and achieving fulfilment for human beings. But Heidegger also perceived that the prevailing values of the modern world were inimical to this fulfilment. Exploring the implications of a poem or of a verse in scripture may seem to be a waste of time in a culture where material needs compete urgently for time with spiritual rest and growth. Parents need to build a home and acquire temporal goods, while managers need to hire efficient people, keep down costs and show profits. Moreover we live in a time when the reality of technology needs continuously to be faced and evaluated. The use of technology is advancing, and while it brings progress and success, it also threatens to take the control of many things out of the hands of human beings, who ought to be free to write their own destiny. -
Franz Kafka's Transformations
Franz Kafka’s Transformations Andrew Barker ALONE amongst the contributions to the volume, this essay does not address a Scandinavian topic. The theme of transformation in Franz Kafka’s work and life does, however, allow us to recall that Peter Graves is himself a notable example of a changeling, having begun his career at Aberdeen University as a student of German under the venerable Professor Wilhelm (Willy) Witte. What is presented here may thus serve as a reminder of a world Peter inhabited long ago, before he morphed into the Scandinavian polymath we know and honour today. The impetus for the present contribution came from reading James Hawes’ exhilarating study Excavating Kafka (2008).1 This work was promptly written off by Klaus Wagenbach, the doyen of Kafka studies in Germany, who is quoted as saying: ‘Irgendein Dämel kommt daher, weiß nix und schreibt über Kafka’ (Jungen 2008).2 In defence of Wagenbach’s po-faced dismissal of a much younger, non-German scholar’s work, one might plead that his grasp of English was insufficient for him to grasp the book’s satirical and polemical intentions. In fact, Excavating Kafka is the work of a scholar who knows a great deal about Kafka, and writes about him with panache and insight. I can match Hawes neither in my knowledge of Kafka nor the secondary literature, but I share with him a mounting frustration with the commonly-peddled myths about Kafka’s life and work, and it is some of these which I shall address in this short paper. Looking at the work first, I shall concentrate on what is probably Kafka’s most iconic story, Die Verwandlung (1912; ‘Metamorphosis’), the English translation of whose title I find particularly problematic. -
