In Conversation with Adam Curtis, Part III Will Take Place As a Live Interview at E-Flux, New York, on April 14Th Since the early 1990s Adam Curtis has made a number of serial documentaries and films for the BBC using a playful mix of journalistic reportage and a wide range of avant-garde filmmaking techniques. The films are linked through their interest in using and reassembling the fragments of the past – recorded on film and video―to try 01/13 and make sense of the chaotic events of the present. I first met Adam Curtis at the Manchester International Festival thanks to Alex Poots, and while Curtis himself is not an artist, many artists over the last decade have become increasingly interested in how his films break down the divide between art and modern political reportage, opening up a dialogue between the Hans Ulrich Obrist two. ÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊThis multi-part interview with Adam Curtis began in London last December, and is the most In Conversation recent in a series of conversations published by e-flux journal that have included Raoul Vaneigem, with Adam Julian Assange, Toni Negri, and others, and I am pleased to present the second part in this issue of Curtis, Part II the journal in conjunction with a solo exhibition I have curated of Curtis’s films from 1989 to the present day. You’ve mentioned c i r l before how important this extraordinary BBC U I I s archive has been for providing material for your t n r a a films, but how did you arrive at using the archive H P Ê , s 2 i in this way? Was it something you had in mind t 1 r 0 u 2 when you began working at the BBC? C h c m ÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊAC: Well, not really. One moment when I r a a d realized that I could use it was when I made a m A h — t film in 1989 called Inside Story: The Road to i 3 w 3 Terror, which was really my first experimental n # o l i film, and the moment when I found a voice. The t a a n r s r film was about the Iranian Revolution and the u e o j v French Revolution. When you’re a journalist, you n x o u l C f often do things out of desperation, because - n e I you’ve got a deadline and you’ve just got to do it. With that film, I was in a really tight spot – I’d been asked to make a film about the torture in Evin prison of the Iranian Mujahideen – a bunch of not very nice leftists who had originally started the Iranian Revolution with Khomeini, and who Khomeini then simply massacred or imprisoned in the early 1980s after he assumed power. With the likes of Richard Attenborough or Jeremy Vine, Hawking rose to the status of documentary voice and British national public treasure. Therefore, Muslims will be forced to decide between the expression and practice of Din/Religion and the material world in their daily life. There is therefore an ongoing struggle between the observance of God and the pursuit of material conditions. Although Political Islam could be seen as a direct reaction to modern politics, Islam is actually an inherently political religion that rules and regulates every aspect of a believer’s daily life, much in the same way as economic conditions do.

    7 The politics of affect in activist amateur subtitling A biopolitical perspective Luis Pérez-González Self-mediated audiovisual content produced by ordinary citizens on dig- ital media platforms reveals interesting aspects of the negotiation of affi nity and antagonism among members of virtual transnational constit- uencies. Based on Pratt’s (1987) conceptualization of contact zones, this chapter examines the role played by communities of activist subtitlers – characterized here as emerging agents of political intervention in public life – in facilitating the transnational fl ow of self-mediated textualities. I argue that by contesting the harmonizing pressure of corporate media structures and maximizing the visibility of non-hegemonic voices within mainstream-oriented audiovisual cultures, activist subtitling collectivi- ties typify the ongoing shift from representative to deliberative models of public participation in post-industrial societies. The chapter also engages with the centrality of affect – conceptualized from the disciplinary stand- point of biopolitics ( Foucault 2007 , 2008 ) – as a mobilizing force that fosters inter-subjectivity within and across radical subtitling collectivities. Drawing on an example of how emotions reverberate within a virtual community of amateurs subtitling the controversial BBC documentary The Power of Nightmares into Spanish, I examine how affect is gener- ated by the practices surrounding the production and reception of subti- tled material, and how the circulation fl ows of content through digital communication systems contribute to assembling an audience of affec- tive receptivity.     Martin Lang University of Lincoln Spectacular Malaise: Art & the End of History Abstract This article makes two main claims: that Debord’s concept of the ‘integrated spectacle’ is related to end of History narratives; and that the related concept of ‘disinformation’ is manifested in new forms of media-driven warfare. These claims are substantiated through a comparative analysis between Debord’s texts and contemporary politics, primarily as described by Adam Curtis and by the RETORT collective. The resulting understanding of our contemporary politics is a situation where subjects who appear to be free, are in fact only free to choose between competing brands of neo-liberalism that manipulate and baffle in order to obfuscate their true agendas. This situation is termed a ‘spectacular malaise’. The article then critiques post-Marxist claims to a re-birth of History and therefore a potential end to the spectacular malaise. It argues that the Arab Spring and Occupy movement did not signal an end to the end of History, as they were unable to articulate an alternative vision. This situation is compared to the last days of the Soviet Union, when change also seemed unimaginable. It identifies Mark Fisher’s call for activists to demonstrate alternative possibilities and reveal contingency in apparently natural orders to counter the spectacular malaise. Three art collectives are considered as potential candidates to take up this challenge: Women on Waves, Voina, and Superflex. The article concludes that while making actual social and political change is useful for demonstrating alternative possibilities, it is art’s symbolic value that reveals contingency and strikes at the heart of the spectacular malaise.

Accepted: 3rd May 2018. “Destabilized Perception” Infrastructural Aesthetics in the Films of Adam Curtis Rob Coley Abstract: The formerly dissident status of the essay film has, in recent years, been exchanged for a great deal of favorable attention both inside and outside of academia. In the more overly moralistic commentary on the form, the contemporary essay film is submitted as a tactical response to a surfeit of audiovisual media, to an era in which most of us have become both consumers and producers of a digital deluge. The work of Adam Curtis is notably absent from these ongoing debates. Yet Curtis is far from an underground figure— he has been making essayistic films for the BBC for more than twenty years and was the first to produce work directly for the iPlayer platform. Using archival images to examine the present, his films produce counterintuitive connections and abrupt collisions that supplant the authority of narrative causality for a precarious network of associations and linkages. This article treats Curtis’s recent body of work diagnostically. It argues that, quite apart from any promise of escape or deliverance, the aesthetic form of his work actively inhabits the rhythms and vectors of contemporary media. For Curtis, the media- technological conditions of the twenty-first century provoke a crisis that is both political and epistemological, one in which sensemaking can no longer claim to take place at a distance from the infrastructure that mediates such processes but is instead thoroughly and inescapably immanent to them, a situation that prevents contact with the outside.
