RALEIGH LITTLE THEATRE III SETTING & SYNOPSIS The Catholic city of Vienna. Duke Vincentio decides to transfer the government of Vienna to his deputy Angelo, assisted by Escalus, purporting to leave on a mission. In fact, he stays in the city, disguising himself as Friar Lodowick. He explains to Friar Peter that he has left it to Angelo to implement a strict moral code on his behalf – a code he has let slip for the past 19 years. Angelo enthusiastically begins enforcing these old laws, including the death penalty for fornication. This affects Claudio, who has made his intended wife Juliet pregnant, and he is arrested for lechery. Claudio asks his friend Lucio to approach Isabella, his sister who has just entered a convent, to intercede for him. At the same time, a constable Elbow brings Pompey before Escalus, on suspicion of keeping a brothel. Isabella approaches Angelo, and asks him to be merciful. Angelo refuses, but is taken with Isabella, and tells her to return. He offers to release Claudio if Isabella will sleep with him, but she refuses. Meanwhile, ‘Friar Lodowick’ is on his way to visit the prisoners, when he meets Juliet and hears about her and Claudio’s love. ‘Friar Lodowick’ overhears Isabella telling Claudio of Angelo’s proposal. Claudio appalls her by asking her to agree. The ‘Friar’ intervenes, suggesting that she meet with Angelo, but that Mariana, a woman Angelo jilted some years before, should take her place. The ‘Friar’ arranges a meeting between Isabella and Mariana, who agrees to the plan. Elbow is taking Pompey to be seen by Angelo, when they encounter Lucio. Pompey asks Lucio for bail, but Lucio refuses. The ‘Friar’ is present, and engages Lucio in conversation, asking him what he thinks of Duke Vincentio. Lucio paints a black picture of the Duke’s character. Escalus and the Provost take Mistress Overdone to prison. Escalus expresses her sympathy for Claudio to the ‘Friar’. The Provost gives Pompey a job assisting Abhorson, the executioner. Both Claudio and an unrepentant murderer, Barnardine, are due to die the next day. ‘Friar Lodowick’ is present when a message arrives from Angelo; but instead of the expected pardon, it is an instruction for Claudio to be executed earlier than originally planned, and for the head to be brought to him. Following the ‘Friar’s’ suggestion, the head of a dead prisoner is substituted for Claudio’s. Isabella arrives expecting to be told of Claudio’s release. Instead, ‘Friar Lodowick’ tells her that Claudio was executed, and that she should obtain justice from the Duke, who is returning the next day. Duke Vincentio arrives in the city, and is approached by Isabella, who accuses Angelo of his attempted seduction. The Duke pretends not to believe her, and has her arrested. To support her, Mariana reveals herself and affirms that she has slept with Angelo. ‘Friar Lodowick’ is called for, and the Duke leaves, returning as the Friar to defend the women. Condemned by Angelo as a false witness, he reveals himself. Angelo admits his guilt, and is ordered to marry Mariana. Claudio is reunited with Juliet, and the Duke proposes to Isabella. He has been a part of Clayton Youth Theater, playing the role of Randolph in Bye, Bye Birdie and as part of the ensemble of Little Shop of Horrors. He is a recent top finisher in Clayton Teen Idol, and has been a singer on the stage since 10 years old. This 13-year old is the son of Alex and Michele Atchison of Clayton. Ruffin is a talented vocalist, a drummer, an academic scholar, a black belt in karate, and avid tennis player. CHRISTOPHER BLACKWELL (Barnardine) volunteers backstage regularly, and is overjoyed to be performing on-stage at Raleigh Little Theatre! He has a Bachelor’s in Computer Science from Francis Marion University, where he made his first forays into theatre. Last year he was in Sonorous Road’s House of the Fury. He’d like to thank his friends and instructors at RLT, ComedyWorx, and the Stage Combat Academy for helping hone and diversify his skills! NATHAN E. BRADSHAW (Duke Vincentio), born in Swannanoa, schooled at Davidson, apprenticed in Goldsboro, ends his Raleigh sojourn soon, following his fiancée (not a nun) and two four-legged children to Vermont. Lately more director (Hamlet, R&G, No Exit, second Henriad) than actor, he’s gladly the opposite of people once more. With Goldsboro’s CST, he miscegenated on Show Boat, conspired against Musketeers, twisted toothpaste caps for Wonka, Bunburyed in Earnest, sported a monocle without a Clue, and psychoanalyzed Harvey. CAROLINE FARMER (Pompey) is in the 9th grade at Panther Creek High School and is excited to be performing in her fourth Raleigh Little Theatre show. Her most recent theatre credits include Raleigh Little Theatre’s Beanstalk! The Musical and Bare Theatre’s Romeo and Juliet. She would like to thank her family, cast, and crew for making this experience possible. Enjoy the show! WILL HARRIS (Abhorson) is excited to take part in his third production at Raleigh Little Theatre. His other Raleigh Little Theatre credits are George in the recent production of Don’t Dress for Dinner and John Arable in Charlotte’s Web. He would like to thank his family for their continuing support. CLAIRE HUENE (Bess/Isadore) moved to Raleigh in 2016 from New York City. She is a retired attorney who loves the theater, and is devoting her midlife crisis to volunteering with wonderful organizations like Raleigh Little Theatre. She is thrilled to be making her onstage debut in this production, and is looking forward to continuing her theater education in RLT’s adult classes. NIKI JACOBSEN (Escalus) is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with this incredible cast after a long hiatus from the stage. In another life, Niki acted in Washington, DC productions including Frankenstein, Macbeth, and A Christmas Carol with Synetic Theater. She taught Shakespeare to students and teachers at Folger Shakespeare Library. Niki is now a personal trainer and loves using her theatre background to make fitness engaging, creative, and fun.
