The Guide Your Connection to Spokane Public Radio Volume 38 / No. 4 October to December 2018 Local and National Election Coverage By Doug Nadvornick, program director The November general election is an important one, both around the nation and in the Northwest. At the national level, analysts are prognosticating about whether Republicans will continue their control of both houses of Congress or whether the Democrats will break through and recapture the majority in one or both chambers. NPR and our other media partners will bring us news about important races between now and Election Day. Around our region, Spokane Public Radio is making arrangements to present many debates and stories about candidates and ballot measures. We’re hoping to air one or two debates featuring the candidates in Washington’s Fifth Congressional District. We’re planning to air two KSPS public television election programs (Spokane County commission candidates/Spokane school and library bond issues) in which I’ll be participating. We’ll have our own call-in program on October 15, in which we’ll discuss Washington (and perhaps Idaho) state initiatives. We’ll also re- air several stories featuring Spokane County and legislative candidates that initially aired before the August primary. Listen to Spokane Public Radio and become informed as you prepare to cast your ballots on or before November 6. Each week we will broadcast a new installment of the novel Miller Cane: A True & Exact History by Spokane author Samuel Ligon. Miller Cane is the story of a fraudulent historian who makes his living conning the victims of mass shootings. He returns home to save the young daughter of the woman he loves, taking her with him on his roadshow across the worn-out heart of America, staying one step ahead of what’s after them. The story is by turns hilarious, unsettling, bizarre, and fearless. Buckle up and come along for the ride! Installments of the novel will first appear each Thursday in the Inlander, Spokane’s free alternative weekly newspaper. Audio segments will be broadcast the following Thursday on Northwest Arts Review. If you miss an installment you can find the text online at millercane.inlander.com and audio at SpokanePublicRadio.org/millercane. KSFC Program Grid / October-December 2018
