We were in for a treat with an almost spotless sun and an extremely quiet ionosphere. And as a result DXers all around the world reported exceptional MW reception. th spotless sun November 4 2009 As a result Martin Hall’s column extends to 39 pages with over a hundred personal firsts reported – many of which will turn out to be UK reception firsts too. Once again lucky Martin caught Hawaii and New Zealand and a considerable collection of Japanese signals, and Alaska was almost regular reception in Northern Scotland. Further south good conditions prevailed but as far as I know Alaska was not heard in England (though it was reported in Germany). Medium Wave News 55/07 3 December 2009 Coming Soon - Updated All Time DX Lists It has been a while since the Circle has been able to update & publish the All Time DX Lists containing details of around 2500 MW stations from outside Europe heard in the UK & Ireland. The good news is that Andrew Brade has been working hard updating the lists and improving the underlying spreadsheets. In the early days we distributed the lists in MWN or as paper supplements via the club's Reprint Service. More recently the files were issued as spreadsheets on annual CDs. As the files grew it became increasingly unwieldy to distribute printed paper copies. Now we are making the All Time Lists available to Medium Wave Circle members on-line via the Internet and we are introducing a new development. From 2009 we will be updating the lists on a monthly basis rather than annually. We will still publish a “definitive” annual version, which will be as accurate and complete as possible. But for the active radio listener and anyone who wants to keep on top of news, the monthly updated list will be extremely useful. For the latest news please join other members on the Circle’s Yahoo Group. Dates for your Diary The next meeting of the Reading International Radio Group will be on Saturday December 5 in Room 3, Reading International Solidarity Centre, 35-39 London Street, Reading at 2.30 p.m. The meeting will finish looking at unofficial political radio broadcasting in the UK, have a report on the Dutch Offshore Radio Day, look at the history of radio commercials in the UK, as well as other current and historical radio related items and audio extracts including some Cold War Iron Curtain stations. Tekel, hereby submit my support for Mr. John Pavlica, Jr.'s Motion to Dismiss the Commission's Report and Order, as adopted October 10, 2002, which currently allows the preliminary use of In-Band, On-Channel (IBOC) digital audio broadcasting (also known by the marketing name "HD Radio") on the AM and FM radio bands. For over a decade, various attempts have been made at designing and implementing an IBOC system for the U.S. radio airwaves, but these attempts have been unsuccessful due to numerous flaws, and iBiquity's current IBOC system is no different. As currently designed and authorized, IBOC is an inherently flawed system that has the potential to cause great harm to the viability, effectiveness, and long-term success of existing analog AM and FM radio broadcasting services. IBOC is a proprietary system Currently, there is only one proponent of an IBOC system whose design has been submitted, studied, and approved -- that of iBiquity Digital Corporation (iBiquity). This is an unprecedented case of the use of a proprietary broadcasting system. Virtually all other enhancements to broadcasting services that have been introduced over the years have been borne out of competition between the designs of various proponents: AM Stereo, FM Stereo, color television, multi-channel television sound, and most recently, High Definition television (HDTV). Station Ownership and Programming in Radio by Tasneem Chipty, CRA International, June, 2007 I. Introduction Out of concern that common ownership of media may stifle diversity of voices and viewpoints, the Federal Communications Commission (“FCC”) has historically placed limits on the degree of common ownership of local radio stations, as well as on cross-ownership among radio stations, television stations, and newspapers serving the same local area. The 1996 Telecommunications Act loosened local radio station ownership restrictions, to different degrees across markets of different sizes, and it lifted all limits on radio station ownership at the national level. Subsequent FCC rule changes permitted common ownership of television and radio stations in the same market and also permitted a certain degree of cross-ownership between radio stations and newspapers. These changes have resulted in a wave of radio station mergers as well as a number of cross-media acquisitions, shifting control over programming content to fewer hands. For example, the number of radio stations owned or operated by Clear Channel Communications increased from about 196 stations in 1997 to 1,183 stations in 2005; the number of stations owned or operated by CBS (formerly known as Infinity) increased from 160 in 1997 to 178 in 2005; and the number of stations owned or operated by ABC increased from 29 in 1997 to 71 in 2005.

    Sheigra DXpedition Report 12 th to 25 th October 2019 - with Dave Kenny & Alan Pennington This was the 58th DXpedition to Sheigra in Sutherland on the far north western tip of the Scottish mainland, just south of Cape Wrath. DXers made the first long drive up here in 1979, so this we guess, was the 40 th anniversary? And the DXers who first made the trip to Sheigra in 1979 to listen to MW would probably notice little change here today: the single-track road ending in the same cluster of cottages, the cemetery besides the track towards the sea and, beyond that, the machair in front of Sheigra’s sandy bay. And surrounding Sheigra, the wild windswept hillsides, lochans and rocky cliffs pounded by the Atlantic.
