Many congratulations to Staff members Cheng Chi Wai and Wong Kin Ming who were awarded Silver and Bronze respectively at the recent HOFEX competition. The Thoughts LEFT and BELOW: Cheng Chi Wai with his Silver Award in Western Cuisine (professional of the Chairman category); His winning dish: Lamb Loin t the time of writing, the HKFC Citibank International Soccer Sevens is about to kick off and the weather, just like last year when it rained heavily throughout the Atournament, is not looking good. However, I am sure that whatever the state of the weather, the soccer will be first class and we will have had another successful tournament. As we move into the hot summer months, most of the sporting leagues finish and players can take a well earned rest. Apart from using the Swimming Pool Complex and Fitness Centre, there are a number of summer activities on offer at LEFT and BELOW: the Club for those of you that wish to retain their Wong Kin Ming fitness levels, so seek out this information from your with his Bronze Award in Section/DSA/Society as well as in this magazine. Western Cuisine (apprentice under 25 category); His winning dish: On a non-sporting topic, I should tell you that the Sustainable Fish – Halibut Club has an active recycling programme and we do our best not to contribute to Hong Kong’s landfills. For example, in the last year we recycled 17,990 kg of Paper, 906 kg of plastic, 269 kg of Aluminium cans, 684 kg of Tin and Iron, 180 kg of stainless Steel and 4,000 litres of used oil. Not a bad result. Following on from my previous Chairman’s Walk- in earlier this year, I will be holding another open door session for any Members who want to talk to me about Club matters between 11am and 1pm on Saturday 15th June in a Meeting Room on the First floor. Last December we presented our case to the IOC’s Programme Commission and this day in May we shall do so to the IOC Executive Board in St Petersburg, Russia, along with the other shortlisted sports for the place on the programme of the 2020 Olympic Games. The presentation group will be led by WSF President Ramachandran and features our two world champions Nicol David and Ramy Ashour, whose passion and charisma are sure to impress the IOC President Jacques Rogge and his fourteen IOC Board colleagues. The bid film will be shown – it features the two players and has already been viewed nearly 110,000 times, along with the video giving a snapshot of the 185 countries that play squash (you can see both at http://www.worldsquash.org/ws/?p=10564) – along with a new film, that is being finished featuring innovation, broadcast and presentation. The spoken presentations will be accompanied by over 70 great slides illustrating the points made. What happens next is not confirmed. Originally it was stated that one sport would be recommended for ratification by the full IOC membership but indications now are that a few sports may be put forward for the final vote. That will be made clear on the evening of 29th May and we must hope that we are there for the final decision in Buenos Aires on 8th September.

Featuring Fight Night and World Champion Karim Gawad A LITTLE BOUNCE CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE Water pipes. Chimneys. Ledges. They didn’t make for an ideal Racquets court. But it was out of the cramped spaces at Harrow School in England that Squash was born. Rather than play with a ball used in the game of Racquets, students realized that if they punched a hole in the ball, it “squashed” when it hit the wall, diminishing the bounce and distance the ball traveled. A long court was no longer needed. And a whole new game was invented. One that required great skill and stamina. A game that favored finesse over power. The spirit of innovation continues as Squash has evolved beyond the days of Harrow School. Today it’s played in 150 countries and attracts over 20 million players. And more people play Squash at Life Time than anywhere else in the world. “LIFE TIME IS THE MOST INNOVATIVE SQUASH CLUB IN THE COUNTRY” – Kevin Klipstein, U.S. Squash Details matter at Life Time.
