Kansas Sports Hall of Fame announces Class of 2017 Thirteen legends to be enshrined October 1 in Wichita

The Kansas Sports Hall of Fame (KSHOF) has announced the members of the Class of 2017 who will be inducted on Sunday, October 1st in Wichita. The KSHOF Class of 2017 consists of 13 members, including: thirteen-time MLB All-Star and 1980 MVP, George Brett of Mission Hills; two-time All-American and first women’s track National Champion at KU, Kristi Kloster Burritt of Olathe; Wichita Heights High School coach and Wichita area tennis coach and enthusiast, Charles “Goose” Doughty; three-sport star at KU and two-time Pro Bowl selection with the Cleveland Browns Galen Fiss from Johnson City; 1954 KU cross country national champion and three-time All-American Al Frame of Kinsley; college football coaching legend from Girard, Dennis Franchione; Olympic gold medalist and member of 1952 KU basketball national championship team from McCune; member of Pittsburg State 1957 national championship football team and professional and college football coach John Levra from Arma; two-sport athlete at Wichita State and eight year major league player from Kingman, Don Lock; junior college women’s basketball coach at Barton and Cloud Jerry McCarty from Coffeyville; K-State women’s basketball All-American Priscilla Gary- Sweeney; KU basketball player and former president of the Kansas Golf Associaion Gerald Waugh from Wellington; and Wichita State baseball All-American and member of 1989 national championship team, Eric Wedge. Charles Doughty, Galen Fiss and Dean Kelley will be honored posthumously. The induction ceremony will be held on Sunday, October 1, 2017, in Wichita. The 13 member class raises the total number of Kansas Sports Hall of Fame inductees to 273. The Kansas Sports Hall of Fame is in its 56th year of operation. The 2017 Induction weekend will also see the return of the KSHOF Golf Classic on Monday, October 2, 2017, at Crestview Country Club in Wichita. Proceeds from the 2017 KSHOF Golf Classic will go toward the “Raise the Roof” fund to repair, replace, and maintain, the roof at the home of the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame, the Wichita Boathouse. GEORGE BRETT – El Segundo (CA) H.S., 1971 Twenty-one year veteran for the Kansas City Royals. Won three Silver Slugger Awards in 1980, 1985, 1988; won 1985 Gold Glove Award; won 1980 American League MVP. Named a thirteen-time All-Star. Career totals: .305 batting average, 3,154 hits, 317 home runs, 1,596 runs batted in, 1,583 runs scored, 201 stolen bases. Member of the 1985 World Series Champion Kansas City Royals. Number 5 jersey retired by the Kansas City Royals in 1994. Inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999, the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1994, Royals Hall of Fame in 1994.

KRISTI KLOSTER-BURRITT – Bishop Miege H.S., 1991 / , 1996 Two-time All-American and first women’s track National Champion at the University of Kansas. Won five state championships in high school at Bishop Miege in the 400 meter in 1989, and the 200 meter and the 400 meter in both 1990 and 1991. Won indoor Big Eight Conference Championship in 800 meter as freshman in 1994; finished 8th in indoor NCAA Championships in 1994 in the 800 meter. Won the indoor Big Eight Conference Championship in 800 meter in 1996; won the indoor NCAA Championship in the 800 meter in 1996. Also won the outdoor Big Eight Conference Championship in the 800 meter in 1992 and 1994. Named an indoor All- American in 1994 and 1996. Named Academic All-American in 1996. Inducted to the KU Athletics Hall of Fame.

CHARLES “GOOSE” DOUGHTY – Dunbar (OK) H.S., 1950 / Langston (OK) University, 1954 – Coach Star player in his own right, including playing at Langston (OK) University and playing with the Harlem Globetrotters. Head coach of Wichita Heights basketball from 1978 to 1995, including coaching KSHOF Inductee Antoine Carr. Career record as basketball coach: 250-120. Went to six state tournaments. For nearly 50 years, Doughty ran the tennis program at McAdams Park in Wichita and also coached tennis at Wichita Heights, Wichita Southeast, and Friends University. Namesake of the “Goose” Doughty Tennis Facility at McAdams Park and the McAdams-Doughty Open Tennis Tournament. Inducted to the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame in 2009 and the United States Tennis Association Missouri Valley Hall of Fame in 2010.

GALEN FISS – Johnson H.S., 1948 / University of Kansas, 1952 Three sport athlete at KU in baseball, football and track. Named All-Conference football selection in 1952. Selected in the 13th round of the 1953 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns; signed instead to play baseball with the Cleveland Indians. Played one minor league season before serving two years in the Air Force. Signed with the Browns and became starter in rookie season in 1956. Played 11 NFL seasons at linebacker. Two-time Pro Bowl selection in 1962 and 1963. Intercepted 13 passes and recovered 18 fumbles in his career. Won Championship with the Browns in 1964. Football teammate of KSHOF Inductee Mike McCormack at KU; roommate and baseball teammate of KSHOF Inductee . Inducted to the Cleveland Browns Legends in 2013.

ALLEN “AL” FRAME – Wichita East H.S., 1952 / University of Kansas, 1956 1954 NCAA cross country National Champion. Three-time All-American; 1954 and 1955 in cross country, 1955 in track. Eight individual conference championships: six individual Big Seven Conference track and field titles; two individual Big Seven Conference cross country titles. Won conference titles in 1954 two-mile, 1955 mile, 880 and mile in 1956 in indoor track. Won conference titles in mile and two mile in outdoor track in 1955. Won 1954 and 1955 cross country conference titles. Part of nine conference championship teams at KU, including three titles in cross country, three titles in indoor track, and three titles in outdoor track. Ran at KU for KSHOF Inductee Bill Easton; teammate of KSHOF Inductees Wes Santee, Al Oerter, and Bill Nieder. Inducted to the KU Booth Athletics Hall of Fame.

DENNIS FRANCHIONE – Girard H.S., 1969 / Pittsburg State University, 1973 – Coach Football coach for more than forty years at the high school and collegiate level. Head coach at: Mulvane High School, Peabody-Burns High School, Southwestern College, Pittsburg State, New Mexico, Texas Christian, Alabama, Texas A&M, Texas State. Won KCAC titles at Southwestern posting 14-4-2 record in two seasons. Won five conference titles posting 53-6 record in six seasons. Won two conference at TCU posting a 25-10 record in three seasons. Overall career collegiate coaching record: 213-135-2. Coached KSHOF inductee Jerry Kill at Southwestern; KSHOF inductees Jerry Kill and Chuck Broyles both served as assistants under Franchione.

DEAN KELLEY – McCune H.S., 1949 / University of Kansas, 1953 Member of second place Class B state basketball at McCune in 1949. Two Final Four appearances and an Olympic gold medal in basketball. Starting guard on 1952 KU NCAA National Championship team. Member of 1952 U.S. Olympic gold medal winning team. Member of 1953 NCAA runner up team. Only KU player to be selected to two All-NCAA Tournament teams in 1952 and 1953. Member of 1955 Pan Am gold medal team in Mexico City. Member of 1958 AAU Caterpillar Cats; selected to International Team to tour Soviet Union in 1958. KU and/or Olympic teammate of KSHOF Inductees , , Bill Leinhard, , , Dean Smith, B.H. Born. Brother of KSHOF Inductee Al Kelley.

JOHN LEVRA – Arma H.S., 1955 / Pittsburg State University, 1959 – Coach Member Pittsburg State University football NAIA National Championship team in 1957. Coached New Mexico Highlands (35-4-1), Stephen F. Austin (18-4) and spent four years at the University of Kansas as offensive coordinator. Assistant NFL coach for over 20 seasons including eight playoff years. Coached defensive line for Bears and won four division titles; team ranked first in the NFL in sacks in 1986 and 1987, and set NFL record for fewest points allowed in a season. Also assistant coach for the Vikings, Bills, Broncos, and Saints. Coached Six HOF players. Assistant coach for Pro Bowl, College All-Star Game and served under NFL coaches Mike Ditka, Bum Phillips, and Wade Phillips. Inducted to Pittsburg State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000.

DON LOCK – Kingman H.S., 1954 / Wichita State University, 1958 Played both baseball and basketball at Wichita State. Played basketball all four years at WSU for KSHOF Inductee Ralph Miller and was teammate of KSHOF Inductee Cleo Littleton. Signed with in 1958. Made Major League debut with the Washington Senators in 1962. Finished sixth in American League in home runs in 1963 with 27 home runs; finished tenth in American League in home runs in 1964 with 28. Led American League in assists and put outs in 1963. Played a combined eight Major League seasons with Washington, the and the . Career totals: .238 batting average, 122 home runs, with .976 career fielding percentage in 921 career games. Inducted to the Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974 and was a Wichita State Shocker Athletics Hall of Fame Charter Inductee in 1979.

JERRY MCCARTY – Coffeyville-Field Kindley H.S., 1957 / Northwestern Oklahoma State University, 1967 – Coach Basketball coach who won over 600 games in high school and small colleges in Kansas. Coached twelve years at Beeler and Hope high schools before becoming head women’s basketball coach at Cloud County Community College from 1977 to 1983, posting career record of 143-28, including three Region VI Championships and the 1980 NJCAA Tournament runner-up. Head women’s coach at Barton Community College from 1983 to 1995, posting record of 322-76; most wins in Barton County women’s history. Won six Region VI Championships and eleven Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference championships at Barton. Combined career juco women’s basketball coaching record: 465-104. Named the 1986 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year. Also served as head baseball coach at Cloud County Community College from 1978 to 1981. Inducted to the Barton Community College Sports Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Cloud County Community College Athletics Hall of Fame.

PRISCILLA GARY-SWEENEY – Hamilton (TN) H.S., 1979 / Kansas State University, 1983 K-State women’s basketball first All-American in 1983. Two-time First-Team All-Big Eight selection. Scored 1,169 points in two seasons in Manhattan; led Wildcats in scoring in 1982 and 1983. Averaged 18.3 points per game during her K-State career. Ranks in top five in career shooting percentage. Led Wildcats to back-to-back Big Eight Conference Championships in 1982 and 1983. Also led Wildcats to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances with Elite Eight in 1982 and Sweet Sixteen in 1983. K-State #10 retired in 2009. First woman inducted to the K-State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998.

GERALD WAUGH – Wellington H.S., 1945 / University of Kansas, 1951 Four sport letterman at Wellington High School. Member of 1950 Big Seven Championship team at KU. Team captain as a senior in 1951. Averaged 6.6 points per contest under KSHOF Inductee . Played on 1951 KU team with KSHOF Inductees Clyde Lovellette, Bill Hougland, Bob Kenney, and . Began coaching career at Emporia High School before serving as assistant basketball coach under KSHOF Inductee for three seasons from 1957 to 1960, including 1957 Final Four team. Coached golf at KU multiple times throughout career, including men’s coach from 1958 to 1959, again in 1976. Also coached KU women’s golf from 1992 to 1999. Served as assistant athletic director for Olympic Sports at KU from 1974 to 1979. Served a term as president of the Kansas Golf Association. Inducted to the Kansas Golf Hall of Fame in 1998 and the KU Booth Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000.

ERIC WEDGE – Northrop (IN) H.S., 1986 / Wichita State University, 1989 All-American baseball player at Wichita State for KSHOF Inductee Gene Stephenson. Led Shockers to 1989 NCAA National Championship. 1989 first-team All-American; 1989 Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year. Led nation in walks and total bases in 1989; finished second in the nation in runs, RBI, and home runs. Drafted in the third round of the 1989 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox. Played four professional seasons with the Red Sox and Rockies organizations. Named of the Cleveland Indians in 2003; managed ten seasons in the Major Leagues with the Indians and the Seattle Mariners. Named the 2007 American League Manager of the Year. Inducted to the Indiana High School Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007, the Wichita State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996, the Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014, and the Missouri Valley Conference Hall of Fame in 2017.
