Live comedy isn’t viewed as being equal to other art forms by funding bodies across the UK — the same funding bodies responsible for distributing this week's £1.57 billion support package. This is despite comedy being a grassroots creative industry, which is accessible and inclusive to all, no matter your income, where you live, or your sense of humour. Ticket prices are cheaper than almost any other artform, and comedy takes place in every nation and region of the country, in dedicated spaces but also in pubs, music venues, and theatres in every town and city. We believe that comedy is art and should be treated as such. As fans, audience members, and those who work in live comedy, we therefore ask: 1.

Inspired by the UCD poet Thomas McDonagh and motivated by a desire to create a literary legacy for students, we took the seven signatories of the Proclamation of Irish Independence, added Elizabeth O’Farrell and asked eight writers to create a fifteen minute monologue in response to each of the characters. EILIS O’BRIEN Director of Communication The lineup of writers: Thomas Kilroy, Joseph O’Connor, Éilís Ní and Marketing Dhuibhne, Marina Carr, Emma Donoghue, Hugo Hamilton, Rachel Fehily and of course Frank McGuinness, was signal enough that the work would be of high quality but, when we came to the first reading in December 2015, we knew we had created something extraordinary. The writers and a few colleagues involved in the project gathered in Ardmore House. Director Patrick Mason (an honorary UCD man) decided the reading order and brought the actors along. At the last line of the reading you could have heard a pin drop.
