SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2019 >EMPRESS=-IVE WIN IN RACHEL ALEXANDRA STAR OF THE SHOW by Alan Carasso The money poured in on Joel Politi=s Serengeti Empress (Alternation) in the 10 minutes or so leading up to the start of the GII Rachel Alexandra S. at the Fair Grounds, as she tumbled from around 7-2 to be off as the 9-5 post-time favorite. The money proved right on, as the $70,000 Keeneland September yearling, making her seasonal debut and first start since finishing a very well-backed seventh to champion Jaywalk (Cross Traffic) in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies at Churchill Downs Nov. 2, was able to establish a fairly soft lead on a track that was playing kind to speed going both short and long and shot away from her rivals in the stretch to score by 4 1/2 lengths. Liora (Candy Ride {Arg}), a latest fourth to Needs Supervision (Paynter) in the Jan. 19 Silverbulletday S., rallied for second ahead of Eres Tu (Malibu Moon). The Rachel Alexandra offered War of Will | Hodges Photography points along the Road to the Kentucky Oaks on a 50-20-10-5 by Steve Sherack scale. Cont. p4 War of Will (War Front) continued his march towards the First Saturday in May with another powerful performance in Saturday=s GII Risen Star S. at Fair Grounds. He made his way to the front under his own restraint on the far turn, kick for home in complete command and kept on finding down the lane as Tyler Gaffalione kept the handsome bay=s mind on business with several reminders, to score by 2 1/4 lengths. >TDN Rising Star= Country House (Lookin At Lucky), far back in the early stages, made a valiant run in the stretch going against the track while lugging in repeatedly to finish a strong second in his first attempt versus winners. Longshot Roiland (Successful Appeal) was up for third. AFor a big horse, he has tremendous speed,@ trainer Mark Casse said in the Fair Grounds Stakes Recap. AHe had to hit the gas a little to get over, so that got him a little riled up. It=s like hitting the gas and trying to hit stop. They=re not as easy to stop as a car. He got him rolling and probably made the lead a little earlier than we would have liked. He=s done this a few times early on. When he gets the lead, he starts wandering. If he keeps winning, there will be some big targets for him to chase.@ Cont. p3 PUBLISHER & CEO Sue Morris Finley @suefinley [email protected] V.P., INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONS Gary King @garykingTDN [email protected] EDITORIAL [email protected] Editor-in-Chief Jessica Martini @JessMartiniTDN Managing Editor Alan Carasso @EquinealTDN Sunday, February 17, 2019 Senior Editor Steve Sherack @SteveSherackTDN Racing Editor Brian DiDonato @BDiDonatoTDN News and Features Editor Ben Massam @BMassamTDN Associate Editors Christie DeBernardis @CDeBernardisTDN Joe Bianca @JBiancaTDN ADVERTISING [email protected] Director of Advertising Alycia Borer Advertising Manager Lia Best Advertising Designer Amanda Crelin Advertising Assistants Alexa Reisfield Amie Morosco Advertising Assistant/Dir. Rachel Alexandra S. cont. from p1 There appeared to be enough speed signed on inside and outside of Serengeti Empress, but the chalk jumped straight into the bridle and led into the first turn from the rail-drawn Sandpiper S. romper Molto Bella (Violence) and Liora out three deep. Racing perhaps a touch keen through the middle stages, Serengeti Empress switched off nicely for James Graham to cut six panels in a fairly easy 1:12.45 and it was game over for all intents and purposes. Held together into the lane, she was shaken up with three-sixteenths of a mile to travel and ran out TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 5 OF 12 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • FEBRUARY 17, 2019 13 1/2 lengths in the Ellis Park Debutante Aug. 19. She was in a race of her own in the GII Pocahontas S. Sept. 15, kicking home by a Rachel Alexandra-esque 19 1/2 lengths, but it was back down to earth on Breeders= Cup Friday.
