Magistro darbo objektas – kultūrinio identiteto išraiškos šiuolaikinėje Taivano pop kultūroje. Darbo tikslas – paneigti požiūrį, kad artikuliuojamas taivanietiškumas kultūrinį idententitetą visuomenė apibrėžia per vietinės ir kinų kultūros dichotomiją bei įrodyti, kad veikiau artikuliuojamas multikultūrinis identitetas. Darbo uždaviniai: išsiaiškinti kaip formavosi Taivano kultūra ir kultūrinis identitetas istoriniame šalies kontekste valdant svetimšaliams ir veikiant kolonializmo, imperializmo procesams. Išanalizuoti kaip iškilo ir formavosi nauja kultūrinė erdvė, populiarioji kultūra, ir jos diskursas įgavus politinę laisvę. Išanalizuoti konkrečius pavyzdžius iš Taivano pop kultūros ir identifikuoti kokį šiandieninės Taivano visuomenės suvokimą apie savą kultūrą ir kultūrinį identitetą jie pademonstruoja. Naudojant A. Gramsci kultūrinės hegemonijos teoriją ir akademinę diskusiją apie „kitoniškumą“ buvo prieita išvados, kad Taivano visuomenės savitos kultūros suvokimas formavosi veikiamas kolinijinių, imperialistinių procesų, kultūrinėje dichotomijoje. Remiantis susiteminta akademine diskusija apie pop kultūros formavimąsi ir funkcijas, prieita išvados, kad Taivano populiariosio kultūros ištakomis laikoma vyravusi kultūrinė dichotomija ir ji suvokiama kaip atsvara kiniškos kultūros dominavimui. Pritaikius multikultūralizmo požiūrį analizuojant konkrečius pavyzdžius iš Taivano pop kultūros, prieita išvados, kad populiarioji kultūra šiandieninei Taivano visuomenei sukuria ervę kultūrinei išraiškai, kuri išlaisvina nuo istorinių, politinių įtampių, neverčia daryti pasirinkimo tarp vienos ar kitos kultūros. O susidūrus su šalimi, kuri pati jau daugiau nei keletą dešimtmečių patiria sunkumus bandydama suvokti save, savo kultūrą bei apibrėžti savo tapatybę, ši užduotis atrodo dar sudėtingesnė, tačiau ir įdomesnė, labiau įtraukianti. Viena tokių šalių yra Taivanas. Taivanas žavus tuo, kad turi milžinišką potencialą pasiūlyti konkrečius pavyzdžius tyrinėjant šių laikų aktualiausias temas – lanksčias tapatybes, kolonijinį paveldą, globalizaciją, lokalizaciją ar net glokalizaciją. Todėl suprasti jį tampa nepaprastai komplikuotu, tačiau nuo pat pradžių sudominančiu ir toliau nesustojančiu intriguoti iššūkiu. Nuo pat Taivano studijų pradžios identiteto klausimas yra labiausiai mėgstamas Taivano visuomenę bandančių suprasti akademikų tyrimų objektas. Jam analizuoti mokslininkai pasitelkia taivanietiškumo sampratą, kuri savyje talpina klausimą „ką reiškia būti taivaniečiu“. Jis apima kone visas Taivano sferas ir mokslininkai bando atsakyti į klausimus ką reiškia būti Tavano gyventoju, etniniu taivaniečiu bei Taivano kultūros nešiotoju. Todėl analizuoja nacionalinį, etninį ar kultūrinį identitetus (Tu, 1996; Tsai, 2007). Dėl komplikuotos istorinės, politinės situacijos, tarptautinių santykių su Kinija ir potencialios nepriklausomybės siekio (Copper, 2003), ilgai centriniu Taivano visuomenės analizės objektu buvo politikos ir nacionalinė tapatybės diskursai, o kitos svarbios šalies sferos, kaip kad kultūra, tapo antraeiliais susidomėjimo objektais. Pastaruoju dešimtmečiu fiksuojamas akademinis pokytis – auga susidomėjimas alternatyviais šaltiniais šiuolaikinei visuomenei analizuoti, kurių vienu pagrindiniu tampa populiarioji Taivano kultūra. Populiarioji kultūra tampa svarbi, nes ji atspindi ne tik valdžios veiksmus, nukreiptus į visuomenės formavimą, bet ir visuomenės reakciją į juos. Tačiau būdamas bendro kultūros diskurso dalimi, pop kultūros diskursas neišvengiamai remiasi akademinėmis diskusijomis apie istorinį Taivano kultūros ir kultūrinio identiteto formavimąsi. Todėl analizuojant populiariosios kultūros erdvę, projektuojamas panašus požiūris ir joje besireiškiantis kultūrinis identitetas analizuojamas istoriniame Taivano kultūrinės patirties kontekste, kuris pasiūlo, kad Taivanas ir jo visuomenė apibrėžia savo kultūrą per įtampą ir konfrontacinį santykį su buvusiomis kultūrinėmis hegemonijomis. 5 Tačiau neseniai oficiacialios Taivano kultūros diskurse iškilo naujas požiūris į šalies kultūrą, kaip į hibridišką, multikultūrinį darinį. Todėl šio darbo tikslas yra pritaikant šį požiūrį iš naujo pažvelgti bei įvertinti Taivano pop kultūros erdvę. Naujo žvilgsnio į pop kultūrą pagalba bus paneigiama idėja, kad šiuolaikinė Taivano visuomenė apibrėžia savo kultūrą remdamasi unikalios istorijos ir kultūrinės patirties suformuotomis įtampomis. Bus pademonstuojama, kad Taivanas ir jo visuomenė renkasi multikultūrinį identitetą, kuris išlaisvina visuomenę nuo praeities įtampų. Darbo objektas – kultūrinio identiteto išraiškos šiuolaikinėje Taivano pop kultūroje. Tyrimo problema: Ar populiariojoje kultūroje artikuliuojamas taivanietiškumas formuoja taivanietiškos ir kiniškos kultūrų dichotomiją? Darbo tikslą pasiekti padės keletas uždavinių: 1. Išsiaiškinti kaip formavosi Taivano kultūra ir kultūrinis identitetas istoriniame šalies kontekste. Tai padės suvokti su kokiais iššūkiais ir įtampomis Taivanas susidūrė proceso metu. Taip pat pademonstruoti kaip šie iššūkiai ir įtampos lėmė savitos Taivano kultūros ir kultūrinio identiteto suvokimą bei pateikimą akademiniame diskurse, formavo tam

However, variations are seen in the content of a betel quid across the different countries. Factors associated with commencement and cessation of this habit has been numerously studied. Unfortunately, data on Malaysian population is non-existent. This study aims to determine the factors associated with the inception and also cessation of betel quid chewing behaviour among Malaysian adults. Method: This study is part of a nationwide survey on oral mucosal lesions carried out among 11,697 adults in all fourteen states in Malaysia. The questionnaire included sociodemographic information and details on betel quid chewing habit such as duration, type and frequency. The Kaplan-Meier estimates were calculated and plotted to compare the rates for the commencement and cessation of betel quid chewing behaviour. Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to calculate the hazard rate ratios for factors related to commencement or cessation of this habit. Results: Of the total subjects, 8.2% were found to be betel quid chewers. This habit was more prevalent among females and, in terms of ethnicity, among the Indians and the Indigenous people of Sabah and Sarawak. Cessation of this habit was more commonly seen among males and the Chinese.

Yang All rights reserved ABSTRACT Market, Medicine, and Empire: Hoshi Pharmaceuticals in the Interwar Years Timothy M. Yang This dissertation examines the connections between global capitalism, modern medicine, and empire through a close study of Hoshi Pharmaceuticals during the interwar years. As one of the leading drug companies in East Asia at the time, Hoshi embodied Japan's imperial aspirations, rapid industrial development, and burgeoning consumer culture. The company attempted to control every part of its supply and distribution chain: it managed plantations in the mountains of Taiwan and Peru for growing coca and cinchona (the raw material for quinine) and contracted Turkish poppy farmers to supply raw opium for government-owned refineries in Taiwan. Hoshi also helped shape modern consumer culture in Japan and its colonies, and indeed, became an emblem for it. At its peak in the early 1920s, Hoshi had a network of chain stores across Asia that sold Hoshi-brand patent medicines, hygiene products, and household goods. In 1925, however, the company's fortunes turned for the worse when an opium trading violation raised suspicions of Hoshi as a front for the smuggling of narcotics through Manchuria and China. Although the company was a key supplier of medicines to Japan's military during World War Two, it could not financially recover from the fallout of the opium scandal.

This prospective study of the elderly population estimated the risks of smoking for morbidity and mortality and identified whether cessation of smoking reduced the risk of disease. Data came from face-to-face interviews that used a population-based probability sample of those aged 60 years or over in Taiwan, provided by the Population and Health Research Center, Bureau of Health Promotion. In total, 4,049 subjects were included at the baseline year of 1989 and followed up in 1993 and 1996. Smoking-related variables included current smoking status, smoking history, daily consumption, and years since the cessation of smoking. Cox regression models were used to analyze the relative risks for morbidity and mortality, controlling for demographics, physical function, and comorbidities. The sample was made up of 50.2% nonsmokers, 15.2% ex-smokers, and 34.6% current smokers in the baseline year. Current smokers were more likely to have lower respiratory tract diseases throughout the study. Current smokers had a higher risk of stroke from 1989 to 1993. No dose-response relationship for smoking exposure or impact of years since smoking cessation was found.

The analysis undertaken reviews three case studies of major events in the baseball world in Taiwan to provide an insight into the principal interests and forces in the governance system. In theoretical terms the study employs and evaluates classical theories of the state, strategic relations theory and governance theory to describe, evaluate and explain the processesevident in the three cases.The study concludes that the governance system is characterised by a tension between mechanisms of 'modem' liberal politics, and 'traditional' forms of political clientelism. This study investigated whether betel nut chewing could be associated with hypertension in Taiwanese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The data of a total of 81,226 (37,226 men and 44,000 women) patients with T2DM obtained from a cross-sec- tional telephone survey in a national sample of diabetic patients in Taiwan were analyzed. Hypertension was defined by a positive history or reported systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pres- sure ≥90 mmHg. Analyses were performed in separate sexes with consideration paid to the potential con- founding effects of age, diabetic duration, body mass index and smoking. The prevalences of betel nut chewing in men and women were 20.4% and 1.1%, respectively. Betel nut chewing was more common in the younger age groups of the male sex. The multivariate-adjusted odds ratios for hypertension in chewers vs. non-chewers were 1.067 (1.007–1.131) and 1.897 (1.534–2.346) for men and women, respectively. In mul- tiple linear regression, although no adjustment was made for the use of antihypertensive agents, betel nut chewing was significantly associated with blood pressure, with regression coefficients of 0.958±0.163 (SEM) for systolic and 0.441±0.108 for diastolic blood pressure in men; and the respective values for women were 1.805±0.618 and 1.198±0.393.

Methods: Using the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) of Taiwan (2001), a survey of over 20 000 participants, frequencies were calculated for smoking, ex-smoking, quantity smoked, and exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). Breakdowns by age, sex, and socioeconomic status were also calculated. Results: The ratio of male to female smoking rates was 10.9 to 1 among adults (46.8%/4.3%), but 3.6 to 1 among underage teenagers (14.3%/4.0%). The proportion of underage to adult smokers was three times higher for girls than for boys. Smoking prevalence substantially increased during and after high school years, and peaked in those aged 30–39 years. Smoking rates of high school age adolescents increased more than threefold if they did not attend school or if they finished their education after high school.
