No underlying principle has guided the design of these learning systems, other than vague inspiration drawn from the architecture of the brain (and no one really understands how that operates either). Like a brain, a deep neural network has layers of neurons — artificial ones that are figments of computer memory. When a neuron fires, it sends signals to connected neurons in the layer above. During deep learning, connections in the network are strengthened or weakened as needed to make the system 5 О Г О К С В Е Ш Ы Н Р Е Ч . Г . Н И Н Е better at sending signals from input data — the pixels of a photo of a dog, М for instance — up through the layers to neurons associated with the right И Т Е high-level concepts, such as “dog.” After a deep neural network has Т И “learned” from thousands of sample dog photos, it can identify dogs in С Р new photos as accurately as people can. The magic leap from special cases Е В И to general concepts during learning gives deep neural networks their Н У power, just as it underlies human reasoning, creativity and the other Й Ы faculties collectively termed “intelligence.” Experts wonder what it is Н Н about deep learning that enables generalization — and to what extent Е В brains apprehend reality in the same way. Naftali Tishby, a computer Т С scientist and neuroscientist, presented evidence in support of a new theory Р А Д explaining how deep learning works. Tishby argues that deep neural У С networks learn according to a procedure called the “information О Г bottleneck” . The idea is that a network rids noisy input data of extraneous Й И details as if by squeezing the information through a bottleneck, retaining К С В only the features most relevant to general concepts. Striking new computer О Т experiments reveal how this squeezing procedure happens during deep А Р learning, at least in the cases they studied. Н И Н Е Some researchers remain skeptical that the theory fully accounts for the М success of deep learning, but Kyle Cranmer, a particle physicist at New И Т Е York University who uses machine learning to analyze particle collisions Т И at the Large Hadron Collider, said that as a general principle of learning, it С Р “somehow smells right.” Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneer of deep learning who Е В И works at Google and the University of Toronto, emailed Tishby after Н У watching his Berlin talk. “It’s extremely interesting,” Hinton wrote. “I Й Ы have to listen to it another 10,000 times to really understand it, but it’s Н Н very rare nowadays to hear a talk with a really original idea in it that may Е В be the answer to a really major puzzle.” According to Tishby, who views Т С the information bottleneck as a fundamental principle behind learning, Р А Д whether you’re an algorithm or a conscious being, that long-awaited У С answer “is that the most important part of learning is actually forgetting.” О Г Tishby began contemplating the information bottleneck around the time Й И that other researchers were first mulling over deep neural networks, though К С В neither concept had been named yet. It was the 1980s, and Tishby was О Т thinking about how good humans are at speech recognition — a major А Р challenge for AI at the time. Tishby realized that the crux of the issue was А С the question of relevance: What are the most relevant features of a spoken word, and how do we tease these out from the variables that accompany them, such as accents, mumbling and intonation? In general, when we face the sea of data that is reality, which signals do we keep? “This notion of relevant information was mentioned many times in history but never formulated correctly,” Tishby said in an interview last month. “For many years people thought information theory wasn’t the right way to think 7 О Г О К С В Е Ш Ы Н Р Е Ч . Н И Н Е about relevance, starting with misconceptions that go all the way to М Shannon himself.” Claude Shannon, the founder of information theory, in И Т Е a sense liberated the study of information starting in the 1940s by allowing Т И it to be considered in the abstract — as 1s and 0s with purely mathematical С Р meaning. Shannon took the view that, as Tishby put it, “information is not Е В И about semantics.” But, Tishby argued, this isn’t true. Using information Н У theory, he realized, “you can define ‘relevant’ in a precise sense.” Imagine Й Ы X is a complex data set, like the pixels of a dog photo, and Y is a simpler Н Н variable represented by those data, like the word “dog.” You can capture Е В all the “relevant” information in X about Y by compressing X as much as Т С you can without losing the ability to predict Y.

If you think of globaliza- tion literally you might answer ‘‘Christopher Columbus’’ or someone else from the great era of (European) discovery. If you want to know who ‘‘invented’’ the world as a single geographic unit, all connected to the European center, there are several names you might give, but Co- lumbus is as good as any of them. If you think of globalization as the idea of an economic process that unites and transforms the world, creating a single global system, the inventors’ names are Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Steve Easterbrook walked into his office in McDonald’s corporate headquar- ters. He had finally achieved his dream of becoming chief financial officer (CEO) at a major Fortune 500 company, but somehow he had expected it to feel better than this. Don Thompson, the former CEO who had recently “retired” had not been just his boss, but his friend. They had both started their careers at McDonald’s early in the 1990s and had climbed the corporate ladder together. He had not taken personal joy in seeing either his friend or his company fail. Rather, Easterbrook had fantasized about inheriting the company at its peak and taking it to new heights—not finding the corporate giant on its knees in desperate need of a way to get back up. The company’s troubles had snowballed quickly. In 2011, McDonald’s had outperformed nearly all of its competitors while riding the recovery from a deep economic recession. In fact, McDonald’s was the number-one performing stock in the Dow 30 with a 34.7 percent total shareholder return.1 But in 2012, McDonald’s dropped to number 30 in the Dow 30 with a –10.75 percent return. The company went from first to last in 12 brief months (see Exhibits 1 and 2). In October 2012, McDonald’s sales growth dropped by 1.8 percent, the first monthly decline since 2003.2 Annual system-wide sales growth in 2012 barely met the minimum 3 percent goal, while operating income growth was just 1 percent (compared to a goal of 6 to 7 percent).3 Sales continued to decline over the next two years.

The market had already reacted that morning to McDonald’s 12% increase in earnings, sending the stock up 8 percent. After almost no stock increase in 1999 and a 15% drop since the beginning of the year, Jack was happy to have some good news. More importantly, the $180M investment in the Made for You cooking program was finally in place with significant improvements both in food quality and service speed. After decades of spectacular growth, McDonald’s had become an American icon and the world’s most ubiquitous restaurant. Starting as a hot dog stand, the McDonald brothers’ first restaurant had no play area, no happy meals, and didn’t even serve hamburgers. Ray Kroc transformed that concept into a fast food machine, starting first with hamburgers and fries and then always changing with American tastes and culture. By 2000, more than 43 million people visited one of McDonald’s 26,000 restaurants in 120 countries every single day. That translated to more than 15 billion customers a year with system-wide sales of over $40 billion. Yet the previous ten years had been traumatic for McDonald’s. In search of growth, the company had rushed from pizza and veggie burgers to popcorn and pasta. Massive campaigns to increase dinnertime sales with adult-targeted sandwiches like the Arch Deluxe were utter flops.

    THE BURGER IN AMERICA 100th Birthday of the Burger Compiled by James McNair 1800s German immigrants who settled along the Ohio River brought along their recipes for beef cooked in the style of Hamburg, Germany’s largest seaport. Chopped beef in the form of steak tartare had arrived in Hamburg via sailors returning from Russia perhaps as early as the 14th century. Hamburg cooks experimented with variations on the Russian dish, but their broiled version of beef cooked with onions became the favorite preparation. Stands along the New York City harbor that were frequented by German sailors offered “steak cooked in the Hamburg style.” 1834 “Hamburger Steak” was listed at 10 cents, one of the costliest items on the menu, at Delmonico’s in New York. 1884 The Boston Journal quoted a local chef’s reference to chopped “Hamburg steak,” the first published reference to the beef patty. 1885 Local legend of Seymour, Wisconsin, maintains that 15-year-old Charlie Nagreen invented the hamburger sandwich when he sold hamburger steaks from an ox-drawn wagon at the Outgamie County Fair, placing them between slices of white bread so that diners could eat while they strolled the fairgrounds. He continued to sell his creation at the county fair for the next 65 years. Late 1880s Oral histories credit Fletcher Davis, known as “Old Dave,” with creating an unnamed sandwich of hamburger steak between slices of warm home-baked bread at his lunch counter in Athens, Texas. Davis spread a mixture of ground mustard and mayonnaise on the sandwich and topped the beef with a slice of Bermuda onion and cucumber pickles.

Few business firms anywhere in the world have been able to match the sustained growth of McDonald’s. Initially, it grew with one simple product, a hamburger; while it has broadened its product mix today, it still remains uniquely undiversified. The foundation for the success has always been the most rigid standards and controls to be found anywhere. McDonald’s insisted these be adhered to by all outlets, company owned as well as franchised, and therein was an enduring marketing strategy. Then Jim Cantalupo took the company back to basics, and the company’s fortunes turned around. An ill wind now seemed to beset McDonald’s. Cantalupo, 60, the savior, died suddenly of a heart attack.

Burger King’s US sales dropped to $7.75 billion in 2003 from $10.3 billion in 1998. The growing negative attitude towards fast food, aggressive competition and anti-obesity campaigns among others, attributed to the fall in sales. In addition, several internal factors like improper brand management, lack of customer orientation and flaws in new product positioning led to Burger King’s falling sales. A survey by Interbrand, a brand consulting firm, revealed that the brand value of Burger King dropped by 22.8% from $2.7 billion in 2000 to $2.12 billion in 2003 (Annexure I).
