Did you know that Miyazaki’s Laputa Castle is inspired by a real phenomenon than happens in about 100 locations all around Japan ? These are commonly called “castles in the sky” and Takeda Castle Ruins in Asago is one of them! Takeda castle’s is particularly known for its shape, as only its stone foundations remain to this day, earning it the nickname of “The Machu Picchu of Japan”. The panoramic view it offers on Asago and Takeda Castle Town makes it a must-see for the city.

7 8 Japan Heritage - The Silver Carriage Road and the Road of Ores

Japan has a very long and rich history but is usually known for its samurais. But did you know that Japan went through a significant modernization period during the 20th century – called Meiji restoration – which led to the country we all know today? Part of this modernization process included the Meiji government inviting highly skilled foreigners to share their knowledge on specific fields, including mining. And the mine that served as a model for implementing new techniques in Japan is none other than Ikuno Silver Mine in Ikuno!

The modernization of the Japanese mining industry started in Hyogo prefecture with Ikuno as its cornerstone and is now promoted as part of the Japan Heritage program through the story of the Silver Carriage Road and the Road of Ores. So let’s dig in!

15 16 Nestled up the mountains of Ikuno in the Southern part of Asago, Kurokawa Valley is locally known for its clear urokawa streams and water. Thanks to this, it is the natural habitat of K the Japanese giant Salamander – oosanshōuo or, as locals alley affectionately call it, ankō. This lovely creature is classified as V near threatened by the IUCN, so make sure to not disturb it if you encounter one – but feel free to buy several souvenirs in the shape of the salamander in Ikuno!

On your way up to Kurokawa hot spring, you’ll pass Ginzan Lake, which offers beautiful views all year round. As you reach a fork in the road, also check out Uogataki (the Fish’s Waterfall). This waterfall entails a natural water slide, and is surrounded by camping sites which are ideal for spending hot summer days with your family. All the way up in Kurokawa Valley you’ll also find Kurokawa hot spring, as well as Marutsune guesthouse, an inn built in an old Japanese farmers’ house.

Yofudo Onsen & Kurokawa Onsen

What's better than relaxing in a natural hot spring after a long day of discoveries? We picked out these two hot springs in Asago for you to relax in. Yofudo Hot Spring is located in the northern part of Asago in Santo town. Surrounded by paddies, you can enjoy a warm outdoor bath while taking in the scenery all year round.
