Volume 35, Issue 7 From The Commodore

Hello to All, The last couple of months have been pretty busy up at the lake. Starting with the Go for Regular Columns: the Gold regatta, club races, and sailing classes, the time in between seems a bit short. I even made a trip down to Oaxaca Mexico during the last two weeks of June. I returned in time to teach the youth sailing class July 8th assisting Ransom, who has • From the been a great leader in continuing our Commodore education program and starting the adult

• Meeting and advanced beginner program. Highlights 2 The Go for the gold regatta was another • Club Notices 3 successful event. We had about 45 boats which, is about the recent average • Membership 5 it seems. I competed in the Catalina 22 fleet and was able to hold on to first • Calendar 5 place by the end of the weekend.

• Classifieds 9 The competition was tight and the

sailing was great. Our regatta was the third stop for the Northern California travel series award. This series was set up by Doug Brennan and is open to members of the C22 national association. This was the first year and will be raced again next year. As part of the C22 NSA, you have the opportunity to race for the Fleet 54 perpetual trophy and the Far West Region 10 trophy and the Northern California travel series award.

All C22 owners are eligible to join the C22 NSA and are encouraged to join. Besides racing, there are national and regional cruises that you can attend and there is great Individual technical help from sailors with years of experience with the C22. Highlights: Our club is about 70 members strong and seems to be growing. I run into new people at • Clean boating 6 our meetings and at the docks who have become new members or are interested in joining the club. There is a healthy interest in adult sailing classes and I want to thank • Hawaii 7 Ransom for getting this program off the ground. As the program expands, we may be able to continue classes throughout the year. Of course, this means that the instructors have to come out and teach. There are a number of instructors in our club and we have a great core group of people for support.

I look forward to the second half of this year for the sailing and opportunities that arise.

Fair winds to all,

Don Hare Commodore GCYC Commodore s/v: NoCatHare, Catalina 22

Teresa’s Membership Log

Ahoy!

The July 10th General Meeting was fun as usual. Can the lake get any more beautiful?!? The water is receding from the shore and exposing stunning beaches. If you haven't been there in a while, you should treat yourself to the glow!

The 32nd Annual Go for the Gold Regatta was a lot of fun. If you missed it, there's always next year. Thanks to all the members who helped make this huge event successful. Despite that it was hot, we had wind. The race results were finally published in The Union on July 6th. Congratulations to the local winning and placing sailors:

The Open second place winner Time Bandit with skipper Scott Mack, the Catalina 22 winner NoCatHare with skipper Don Hare, the second place Colonel Mustard II with skipper Doug Brennan, and the Open Centerboard third place winner Incoglido with skipper Bruce McDevitt are local sailors!

Welcome back, Dave & Kelly Russo. Dave is healing well after his unfortunate accident, and it's nice to have him back.

Join me in welcoming new members, Jim and LaVonne Mullin from Nevada City. We met Jim at the July 10th General Meeting. They don't have a boat right now, but they're interested in crewing. They heard about our yacht club through the newspaper and Doug Epperson.

If you haven't been to a General Meeting in a while, it could be that you don't have your 2013 Membership Card. Please contact me through the Club's website if you'd like to receive your cards in the mail. It hasn't been usual practice to mail the membership cards, but I would be happy to accommodate. Get underway and try to attend our next General Meeting on August 14th, Scotts Flat Lake, 6:00 to eat, 7:00 to meet! Bring something to BBQ and something to share. Don't forget your smile because we have fun! And, make it a date to walk up to me and request your card. Thank you!

Don't be camera shy. I will have my camera and I do hope to grab a few photos of new members. See you on August 14th.

New Oil and Fuel Pollution Prevention Boating Videos

California’s Boating Clean and Green Program provides tips on proper oil and fuel management to the state’s recreational boating community through two new instructional videos.

Videos include tips and tools to prevent oil and fuel discharges; how to report oil and chemical spills; how to properly dispose of used oil; environmental laws; and information on other clean and safe boating practices recommended for before, during and after fueling boats.

The educational videos are a great resource not only to boaters, but to boating marina and yacht club operators in their efforts of keeping their facilities clean. Please share these valuable resources by posting the videos on your websites. Videos may be viewed and downloaded at www.BoatingCleanAndGreen.com. (look for DBW TV on that page).

The Division of Boating and Waterways and the California Coastal Commission’s Boating Clean and Green Program developed the videos in partnership with the San Francisco Estuary Partnership, the Keep the Delta Clean Program and the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation. Staff developed the video content with assistance, review and support from a Technical Advisory Group comprised of members with the marine industry and boating associations (listed in the videos credits).

The videos were shot in October 2012 in Sacramento (Riverbank Marina) and in Oakland (Oakland Yacht Club and Marina Village Yacht Harbor). During the fuel video shot, staff worked with Captain Tommy Holtzman (Boat Owner and US Coast Guard Auxiliary), his boat the “Shady Ladies” and his crew (John Derrick Jr. and Warren Golubski (Boaters and US Coast Guard Auxiliary) and Chloe Golubski, an adorable dog. In the oil clean boating video, staff worked with Captains Robert J. & Susan Engelhart and their boat “Music.”

The Boating Clean and Green Program is an education and outreach program conducted through the Division of Boating and Waterways and California Coastal Commission. The program promotes environmentally-sound boating practices to marine businesses and boaters.

Beer Can Racing – Hawaiian Style by Dave Cowell

While visiting my brother Chris in Honolulu he arranged for us to do a "Bulkhead" race with his friend in the Kaneohe Yacht Club. The Kaneohe YC is on the south-eastern side of Oahu in Kaneohe Bay, which is also home to the Marine Corps Air Station Hawaii. It's a large bay with sand bars, reefs and islands but has the benefit of getting the summer trade winds straight off the ocean without the ocean's swells.

The Kaneohe YC is a very active racing club supporting several youth fleets, one design fleets, and many ocean races (the Single Pac race from San Francisco ends there). It has a beautiful clubhouse on the bay with lawns, tennis courts, swimming pool, and an open lanai style bar and dining area. The marina has two docks with eighty or so slips for members' boats.

When we arrived, everyone set to the bar for the obligatory beers. This was a Beer Can race. The first thing I noticed was that all the boats were tied Med-style to the seawall between the two docks and the crews were getting the boats ready (loading supplies). Everyone was in good spirits when we went aboard our boat, a Nordic 40 named Kaimiloa. (This boat has a PHRF of only 30 so you know it's fast.) Everyone had stowed their gear and proceeded to get the boat ready which included raising the main. This surprised me since we were pointed downwind and still tied to the dock. I noticed a huge red digital clock on the roof of the clubhouse. The numbers had to be two feet tall. The boats to the starboard started leaving and then it was our turn to cast off. After clearing the boat to port the boom came around and the main picked up wind and we started sailing off without even starting the motor. To my surprise the foredeck crew started hoisting the spinnaker. The boat was barreling down the fairway between the two docks under full sail rapidly getting to hull speed. It was then that I saw the RC sitting on the end of the longer dock. That was the start line! It was like starting Indy from the pits. It dawned on me that it was a pursuit race and everyone had their prescribed start time which they only had to watch the clubhouse clock to get going. Simple and efficient.

Everyone was charging off across the bay under full spinnaker with 15 or so knots of wind but no chop or swell. Tactically there wasn't anything doing except for some attempts to roll each other. Rounding the first mark was only to a reach and so we set the reaching pole and reset the sails. I was impressed at how efficient the crew was.

The next mark was the leeward one and so down came the spinnaker after a call for someone down below to be in the sewer. Apparently the sewer man was involved with demonstrating some of the special equipment on this boat. A built in rum cask. No shrimping and the was run out and set. Rounding the mark in good order it suddenly was apparent something was

Page 8 of 9 …a little dinghy

going wrong. The boat headed off and didn't come to the new course. Other boats were passing us! Maybe it was inattention or an override but the lazy wasn't let go. The skipper jumped and soon everything was squared away and we were off on the windward leg. I pointed out to the foredeck crew that the top of the jib wasn't drawing but they just shrugged as it was a beer can race and the cockpit crew wasn't the regulars. I guess we'd already blown the race so there wasn't any use being fussy.

A couple of tacks later we headed down the lay line and crossed the finish. It was also at the end of the dock and so we and the other boats were charging into the marina under full sail and no motors. That's a test of seamanship. The sails were quickly stricken but then the skipper realized the motor Dousing the spinnaker wasn't starting and we were bearing down on a J boat that was slowly heading into its slip. The only possible way to miss them was to steer off into shallow water until someone turned the battery switch on and the motor started. It's the little things that give you the most consternation. Crisis and collision avoided, we docked, stowed the sails and went ashore for dinner.

The dinner was full service with a regular restaurant menu and we all had a great dinner with drinks for only $30 each. If you're ever in Oahu on the windward side drop by the Kaneohe YC for dinner. It's well worth it. It's a great club with a fun attitude. Go on a Thursday and you're sure to get a ride on a "Bulkhead" racer.
