MOUNTAIN RINGLET SURVEY SQUARES 2014 – NOTES FOR SURVEYORS ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: The following relates only to dedicated Mountain Ringlet searches. For casual records please use our website “Sightings” page where possible. Click on sightings report on: www.cumbria-butterflies.org.uk/sightings/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- We’d welcome surveys in any of the squares listed below, but are particularly interested in those marked * and +, ie where there have been recent positive sightings well away from known colonies or discovery of possible new colonies. The areas to be surveyed fall into 3 groups, in colour below, but also suffixed (1), (2) or (3) for those with black & white printers etc. 1. Grid squares that have previous positive sightings (shown in red) (1) 2. Grid squares adjacent to the above (shown in blue) (2) 3. Grid squares that are previously unrecorded but may have potential to hold Mountain Ringlet populations (shown in green) (3) The objective of these surveys is to try to determine the geographical spread of some known colonies, but also to survey areas that have suitable geology and which may hold previously unrecorded Mountain Ringlet populations. All the 1-km grid squares listed below lie in the 100-km square: NY AREA 1 - LANGDALE 2608 Martcrag Moor / Stake Pass (2) 2607 (north-east corner only) Part of Martcrag Moor (2) 2806 (northern edge) Raven Crag (1) 2807 Harrison Stickle (1) 2710 (eastern half only)

  • Newlands Valley Walk
Newlands Valley Walk You can start this walk from virtually anywhere in the Newlands valley; I started from a couple of our Lake District cottages at Birkrigg on the Newlands Pass. Walk down the road in the direction of Keswick, you will soon come to a tight bend at Rigg Beck where the ‘Old Purple House’ used to stand. There is now a Grand Designs style house on the site but the purple colour remains on the roof garden and the front door. Carry on along the pass till you come across a gate on the right hand side and a finger post indicating a footpath beyond the gate. The path leads down into the valley fields and across a minor road. A track climbs up the other side of the valley and emerges at Skelgill. Walk through the farmyard and turn immediately back on yourself to join the path that runs alongside Catbells, towards the old mines at Yewthwaite. After about half a mile, the path descends into Little Town where you can enjoy a well earned cup of tea at the farm tea room. Now there are two options from Little Town. For a longer walk, go back up onto the track and carry on down the valley. This will take you to the old mines at Goldscope where you can peer into the open shafts on the side of Hindscarth. Alternatively you can walk along the road towards Chapel Bridge and stroll down the lane to the pretty little church. The church serves tea and cake on weekends and during the summer.

  • Draft Core Strategy
South Lakeland Local Development Framework Draft Core Strategy JULY 2009 Lawrence Conway, Corporate Director (Community), South Lakeland District Council www.southlakeland.gov.uk/ldf Alternative formats of this document are available by calling 01539 733333 ext.7102 FOREWORD South Lakeland’s superb natural setting shapes the district’s image and plays a major role in its development, making it a very attractive location for residents and visitors alike. However, while the district can offer a quality of life that is second to none, it does experience problems common to many rural areas. There is a need to deliver more balanced communities and reduce inequality, including reducing dependency on high-level services and jobs in towns outside the district, increasing provision of affordable housing and developing and maintaining high-quality modern sustainable transport networks. We must also meet challenging targets laid down by central government, most notably for house building. The challenge is to secure a sustainable level and pattern of development that creates balanced communities and meets local needs whilst protecting the environment that makes the district special. The Core Strategy document sets out the development strategy for South Lakeland outside the National Park areas up to 2025. It is a long-term plan. It draws together strategies of the council and other organisations whose activities have implications for the development and use of land. It puts the aspirations of the Sustainable Community Strategy into effect – seeking to create a sustainable district that is the best possible place to live, work and visit. We are inviting representations from everybody with an interest in the future of our district.

  • The Lions Tale May 2019 from The
The Lions Tale May 2019 T o n y M o t t S u s a n C a s h V a r i o u s From The Chair Race Reports Contributors A bit of rambling from our chair A detailed summary of race Contributions from a few Lions with a lowdown of what has reports from April. As always, as usual. Put the kettle on, happened so far this year. plenty of people in action all settle down and read on. around the UK. Feel free to contribute next month, any report welcome. 1 The Lions Tale May 2019 From the Chair Tony Mott Could someone let me know where April went please?! The London and Manchester marathons were the big news in April. Months of hard winter training came good for lots of Lions. Gerry, Andrew, Judith, Stephen, Maria, Lesley, Wendy, Simon, Will, Gail, Emma and Jamie tackled London. Two Gavs, Makinder, Suzanne, Amanda, Ranjit, Tim, Roy and Paul ran Manchester. There were first-time marathoners, club records, PBs and amazing performances all round. Thanks to the Lion support crews who are always at these events to cheer our runners on route and pick them up at the finish. Running a marathon is a massive achievement and you should feel very proud of yourself for crossing the finish line, regardless of whether you smashed your PB or dragged yourself over the line in a crumpled sweaty heap. Looking forwards we have Bluebell and the Calderdale Way Relay to get stuck into in May, as well as the usual flurry of races as the weather improves.

We hope you will share your interesting stories, favourite walks, fascinating anecdotes and pictures about DalesRail. Please send them to [email protected] or Simon Clarke at [email protected]. A walk around Grisedale Map: Ordnance Survey Explorer OL`19 – Howgill Fells & Upper Eden Valley Standing by Garsdale Station the prominent hill looking west is Baugh Fell with the cairns of Grisedale Pike visible at the near end. Below Grisedale Pike to the north is Grisedale, a remote valley lying beneath the heights of Swarth Fell. Grisedale featured in a Yorkshire documentary ‘The Dale That Died’ in 1975, a book to accompany the programme was produced by Barry Cockcroft. The Clough River has its source in Grisedale. Tributaries on Swarth Fell and Baugh Fell are collected into Grisedale Beck which continues as Clough River running through Grisedale Head and down Garsdale to join the River Rawthey near Gardsale Bridge. Some of the old farms in Grisedale have been refurbished and are lived in; many are in ruins such as Rowantree, East Scale where there is a Quaker burial ground, West Scale and Round Ing. Here is an easy walk of 8.5 miles which incudes an exploration of Grisedale and continues further by How Beck Bridge to follow the River Ure and on to Garsdale Station. The start of the walk at the very attractive Garsdale Station We begin at Garsdale Station and going north to Garsdale Head, cross the road and continue to Blake Mire.
