Mo Gaba Elected to Orioles Hall of Fame Posted by TBN(Staff) On 07/29/2020 14-year-old Orioles superfan honored as the second-ever recipient of The Wild Bill Hagy Award The Baltimore Orioles announced yesterday that beloved Orioles superfan MOSSILA “MO” GABA has been elected to the Orioles Hall of Fame as the second-ever recipient of The Wild Billy Hagy Award. Mo, a resident of Glen Burnie, Md., began calling in to 105.7 The Fan’s sports programming in 2015 at the age of nine. Unbeknownst to his mother, he would call in on afternoons when he got home from school to share his unparalleled knowledge of Baltimore sports with local fans and radio listeners. Despite losing his eyesight due to a malignant tumor when he was just nine months old, and enduring four different battles with cancer throughout his life, Mo’s infectious laughter and enthusiasm quickly captured the hearts of local sports fans, making him a Baltimore celebrity and a household name. As just the second-ever recipient of The Wild Bill Hagy Award, the Orioles honor Mo as one of the most passionate and devoted fans in franchise history. The award, which was established in 2007 following the passing of WILLIAM G. “WILD BILL” HAGY, expanded the Orioles Hall of Fame to include fans who have inspired others with their devotion to the team, and demonstrated an exceptional commitment in support of the Orioles. Appropriately, Hagy, who rooted for the club year in and year out, was named the first recipient of the award in 2008.

The purpose of the draft is to assign amateur baseball players to major league teams. The draft order is determined based on the previous season's standings, with the team possessing the worst record receiving the first pick. Eligible amateur players include graduated high school players who have not attended college, any junior or community college players, and players at four-year colleges and universities three years after first enrolling or after their 21st birthdays (whichever occurs first). From 1966-1986, a January draft was held in addition to the June draft targeting high school players who graduated in the winter, junior college players, and players who had dropped out of four-year colleges and universities. To date, there have been 1,170 Maryland players selected in the First-Year Player Drafts either from a Maryland High School (337), Maryland College (458), Non-Maryland College (357), or a Maryland amateur baseball club (18). The most Maryland selections in a year was in 1970 (38) followed by 1984 (37) and 1983 (36). The first Maryland selection was Jim Spencer from Andover High School with the 11th overall selection in the inaugural 1965 June draft.
