Key messages
• There is notable variation across the indicators contained within this report within Cwm Taf Health Board. The largest is amongst mortality from circulatory disease in those aged under 75 years, where there is an almost four-fold difference across middle super output areas (MSOAs).
• The association between deprivation and health is clearly apparent. Many health outcomes are statistically significantly worse than Wales as a whole in the following areas of high deprivation: o Rhondda, Cynon, Taf: Cymmer, Tylorstown and Glyncoch o Merthyr Tydfil: Gurnos, Penydarren, Dowlais and Merthyr Vale
• Rates for most indicators in both local authority areas are worse than Wales as a whole, with nearly half of the small MSOAs statistically significantly worse than Wales. However, lower rates are apparent for some indicators in parts of the former Taff Ely district, particularly in Llanharry, Pont-y-clun, Church Village and Llantwit Fardre.
• Hospital admission rates for Cwm Taf Health Board are higher than in Wales, particularly in Methyr Tydfil. Emergency admissions in parts of Gurnos and Penydarren, for example, have a rate almost twice that of Wales.
• The general fertility rate (GFR) is similar to Wales as a whole, but there are low rates in some areas, for example in Treforest, where this is likely to have been affected by the student population.
