Medical diagnoses are theoretical concepts that gain their meaning as a part of the prevailing medical theory. As medical theories change over time, also medical concepts change, as can be seen in the long history of medical thinking. The purpose of this essay is to illustrate medical thinking through examining the formation and use of one example of a particular medical concept “psychosomatic” in medical theory and practice. The approach taken in this essay reflects the writings of Lev Vygotsky, who argued that scientific concepts are tools for scientific thinking. Since all conceptual tools have their own developmental history, to understand the content of any scientific concept to the full we need to understand the processes leading to adoption of that particular concept for scientific inquiry at that particular moment in history. Vygotsky’s approach for analysing the development of science through analysing its concepts is reflected to the writings of Kuhn and Fleck on the development of science. It is argued, that Kuhn’s theory does not apply to the development of medicine. While Fleck’s approach seems to fit better to analysing the theoretical development in medicine, it remains somewhat superficial in analysing the nature and role of concepts in medical thinking. The use of medical concepts in medical practice is discussed in the light of Mikael Leiman’s ideas on the therapeutic encounter as a dialogical process.     Teaching Philosophy 34:3, September 2011 241 The Transition from Studying Philosophy to Doing Philosophy JOHN RUDISILL The College of Wooster Abstract: In this paper I articulate a minimal conception of the idea of doing philosophy that informs a curriculum and pedagogy for producing students who are capable of engaging in philosophical activity and not just competent with a specific domain of knowledge. The paper then relates, by way of back- ground, the departmental assessment practices that have played a vital role in the development of my department’s current curriculum and in particular in the design of a junior-year seminar in philosophical research required of all majors. After a brief survey of the learning theory literature that has informed its design, I share the content of this junior-year seminar. In the paper’s conclusion I provide some initial data that indicates our approach to curriculum and pedagogy has had a positive impact on student achievement with respect to reaching the learning goals associated with “doing” as opposed to “merely studying” philosophy. 1. Introduction Capstone projects are common among liberal arts colleges and fre- quently carry an expectation that the final product demonstrates the student’s achievement of becoming a budding biologist, historian, sociologist, philosopher and so on. Even without a formal capstone requirement, I would hope that my philosophy students could—as they finish their undergraduate studies—demonstrate such an achievement. This is because the full set of benefits made available by an education in philosophy includes but extends well beyond knowledge of the history of philosophy and mastery of a philosophical lexicon.

Here is an idea for solving the education crisis in America. What if all the kids currently failing in school pretended to be good learners? What if all the adults – teachers, principals, administrators, parents – played along and pretended that the kids were school achievers, heading for college? What if this national “ensemble” pretended this was the case day after day, classroom after classroom, school district after school district? We believe that if such a national “performance” were created, the education crisis in America would be over.     Undecidable Emotions (What is Social Therapy? And How is it Revolutionary?) Fred Newman Mathematical Meanderings Social therapy, as I understand it, is done (performed) with groups of people (2). Hence, a most basic (theoretic) question, so far as I can tell, is: what is a group? My answer(s) to this question (fundamental to my understanding of psychology and therapy) derive more from my studies of set theory and foundations of logic and mathematics (which I have studied modestly) than from anthropology or sociology (which I have not studied seriously at all). What is a group? Is a group totally definable in terms of the elements which make it up or does the group have an independent existence in itself? Philosophers (including philosophically inclined logicians and mathematicians) have been asking such questions for centuries. No less a 20th century giant than Kurt Gôdel insisted that his monumental proof of undecidability rested on his Platonistic (philosophically realistic) view of mathematical logical concepts (including, most fundamentally, groups or sets) (3). The view that groups were nothing more than "the sum of their parts" -- nominalism -- dominated early twentieth century positivistic thinking. Ironically, Gôdel's 1930s proof, while a conceptual philosophical rejection of positivism, led to mathematical-logical discoveries which in turn formulated technological discoveries in cybernetics and computer theory and practice which, to some extent, advanced the general modernist belief in a kind of soft positivism. Only in the last twenty or thirty years of the 20th century did postmodernism (typically unselfconsciously) begin to take seriously the foundational implications of Gôdel's discovery.

This is not just a problem of historical scholarship: The misunderstanding of Vygotsky started with his own students and collaborators—during his lifetime—and continued after his death. It is, in other words, integrated into the litera­ ture. And that literature, as a result, appears fractured and inconsistent. Indeed, the larg­ est and the best intellectual biography of Vygotsky is titled Understanding Vygotsky: A Quest for Synthesis (van der Veer & Valsiner, 1991). Blum University of Louisville We can deliberate about things that are in our power and can be done. Aristotle, Nichomachean Ethics The beginning of the contemporary undergraduate's study should involve him in the inquiry experience, encompassing library and field research, for several reasons which include both cultural and psychological evidence that a student is more successful in integrating the purpose and abilities of a Liberal Arts education when he is an agent in the direction of his own studies. The inquiry should be interdisciplinary, for the student has not yet reached a maturity of disciplinary knowledge that will allow specialization in a depth that permits self-direction. This imperative will appear strange to many who are proficient in higher interdisciplinary research, that is, the inquirers who have mastered several disciplines and employ them in their thought, for to be interdisciplinary normally connotes a complex integration of methodologies. As Jonathan Broido expresses it, an interdiscipli- narian must be able to describe the explanatory utility, predictive power, and information-theoretic measures of the fields that he employs.¹ Those academics who are suspicious of interdisciplinary thought and inquiry, accusing it of conceptual confusion, lack of intellectual rigor, and in its undergraduate pedagogy, an impediment to the development of disciplinary competence, will be equally puzzled by a claim that freshmen should begin their orientation to the Liberal Arts through interdisciplinary inquiry.² My presentation of a freshman program in interdisciplinary inquiry is based on an understanding of the concepts of questioning and methods of library and field research "generic" to the social sciences and the humanities,³ yet 57 at a level of simplicity prior to the higher level of disciplinary organization that is accomplished gradually in the upper levels of undergraduate study, and polished in graduate work.
