The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, a 11-member conference of NCAA M I AA Division II institutions in Missouri and Kansas, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. THE Over the past 20 years, the league has undergone several changes, highlighted by increased participation in national championships. The MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA student-athletes have won 13 national team champi- onships and more than 100 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts conference championships in eight men’s and eight women’s sports. Men’s championships include football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, baseball, tennis, and golf. Women’s champions are determined in volleyball, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, softball and ten- nis. MIAA Commissioner Jim Johnson succeeded Ralph McFillen on July 1, 2007. Johnson spent two seasons as athletic director at Texas A&M-Commerce before becoming the MIAA’s third full-time commissioner. Johnson spent nearly two years (2003-05) at what is now the University of Central Missouri as associate athletics director for development. While in Warrensburg, he also served as the institution’s government relations director. Like his predecessor, Johnson has experience in the NCAA national office. He was in membership services from 1997-02, working as membership coordinator and Division II governance liaison. Natasha Oakes, a former All-MIAA track performer at Emporia State University, was added as the third full-time staffer in July 2005 as assistant to the commissioner for compliance. Larry House started in the summer of 2007 assisting the MIAA in the marketing of the conference events. Kellen Coleman started in the summer of 2009 as the director of communications overseeing media relations for the conference.
