    ADRODDIAD BLYNYDDOL / ANNUAL REPORT 1950-51 HENRY BONSALL 1951001 Ffynhonnell / Source The late Henry Bonsall, Llanbadarnfawr. Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1950-51 Disgrifiad / Description A manuscript music book, containing Welsh airs, written by Miss Bonsall, 1807; naturalists' calendars kept at Glan Rheidol, 1841, 1866-70; and diaries and notebooks of Henry Bonsall, 1882-1947. An interesting miscellaneous collection of over 100 printed books, mostly of the nineteenth century and in English, but containing eleven books in other languages (Dept of Printed Books). Five of the books in the collection are of eighteenth century date and eight are seventeenth century books. The last-mentioned include Latin editions of works by Cicero (1606), Erasmus (1613), and Ovid (1626), an English political tract of the year of the Restoration (1660), the 1686 edition of Jeremy Taylor's Holy Living, and a travel book of 1797. The two others are of considerable local interest, namely, Shiers's Mine Adventure in Wales (1700) and a volume of verse entitled Poetical Piety or Poetry made Pious, by William Williams (London, 1677). The latter is dedicated to 'Sir Thomas Pryse of Go-gerthan. .', and the author describes himself in the dedicatory letter as 'a native both of your Neighbourhood and County'. There is a pencil note on the fly-leaf in the hand of the testator stating that the copy came from the 'Wallog Library sold by Col. G. G. Williams'. The eighteenth century books include a copy of the 1713 edition of Thoughts on Religion by W. Beveridge, bishop of St Asaph. The bulk of the collection is of nineteenth century date and the books are highly miscellaneous.

APOLOGIES Apologies for absence were received from Mr G. Davies, E. Gwynne, L. Howells, S. Rajoo, M. Benjamin and C. Heaps (Natural Resources Wales). 2. DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST A declaration of interest was received from Mr. William Lindsay (Chair) in relation to Agenda Item No. 17, Eglwysilan Common. Details are recorded with the respective item. 3. MINUTES – 10TH MARCH 2017 Subject to it being recorded that Roger Evans was in attendance at the meeting and that in relation to the final paragraph of minute No. 6 – Report on LAF Chairs Conference, it was confirmed that the new ROWIP will seek the promotion of health and wellbeing, and the Chairs discussed whether the new document should be a full with-list or a limited but deliverable one. Both options require Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely (SMART) objectives to be applied. The minutes of the meeting held on the 10th March 2017 were approved as a correct record. 4. MATTER ARISING Minute No. 14 – Any Other Business The Chair confirmed that he will write letters to both Andy Powell and June Piper, thanking them for their hard work, support and commitment to working with the Forum.

PURPOSE OF REPORT This report describes the work of Glamorgan Archives for the period 1 June to 31 August 2010. 2. RECOMMENDATIONS Members are asked to note the content of this report. 3. BACKGROUND As part of the agreed reporting process, the Glamorgan Archivist updates the Joint Committee quarterly on the work and achievements of the service. 4. ISSUES A. THE NEW GLAMORGAN RECORD OFFICE PROGRAMME 1. To complete outstanding projects Launch year activities Leighton Andrews, the Minister for Children, Education and Lifelong Learning, and Assembly Member for the Rhondda, was welcomed to the Archives in July. He was shown around by the Glamorgan Archivist, seeing the emphasis on IT use by both the public and volunteers of all ages in delivering and developing operational services. In August, the Glamorgan Archivist played host to an Australian MP, Frances Bedford, who has an interest in the history of women’s suffrage. A tour of the building was followed by a display of records on the subject. Page 1 of 31 Publicity Glamorgan Archives free online access to the 1911 census via the FindMyPast website was publicised in the South Wales Echo which carried a feature on the census and reported its launch at the Office on 25 June, coinciding with the Glamorgan Archives Joint Committee meeting.

[email protected] www.caerphilly.gov.uk/equalities Place Names in Caerphilly County Borough Many place names across the county borough, across Wales and the UK have existed for many centuries and often the reasons why the names exist have been forgotten or become muddled. Welsh place names are usually made up of a geographical description of their location, or relate to a church or some other significant building in the area. Settlement names can be roughly split into six “classes” or “types” of names in terms of their English and/or Welsh names. The first four types are relatively straightforward, the final two are a little more complicated:- Welsh name only - in cases such as Ynys-ddu, Llanbradach or Ystrad Mynach there are no English versions of the place name in existence or in common usage; English name only - the opposite is true for Oakdale, Nelson or Crosskeys for example where there are no Welsh versions of the place name in existence, or a Welsh name is no longer in common usage; Different Welsh and English names on a place, from a totally different origin e.g. Newbridge/Trecelyn; Standard Welsh and English names on a place, from the same origin, but having evolved in both languages, with both forms having established themselves, e.g. Blackwood/Coed Duon; Standard Welsh and English names on a place, which are very similar, with the main difference being in the spelling e.g.

Participants are reminded that the following gear must be taken. Walking boots, rucksack, hats, gloves, warm clothing (not jeans), spare fleece, water and a hot drink, lunch, extra food and of course waterproof jackets and trousers. A whistle and a head torch (with spare batteries) should be carried, particularly during the winter months, and a hi-visibility garment would be very useful in case of poor visibility. Participants must satisfy themselves that the walk is suitable for their abilities. You can take advice by ringing the walk leader whose telephone number is given. No liability will be accepted for loss or injury that occurs as a result of taking part. An adult must accompany young people (under 18). MOST OF THESE WALKS ARE FOR EXPERIENCED WALKERS - IF YOU’RE NOT SURE OF YOUR ABILITY WHY NOT START OFF WITH A MODERATE WALK TO FIND OUT? Please check the guided walks programme on the website for planned cancellations and changes to walks. Leaders may change or cancel the advertised route at their discretion due to adverse weather conditions or other problems on the day. Strenuous walks require fitness and stamina to cope with several steep climbs and/or cover a good distance at a steady pace. Energetic walks generally involve two steep climbs but they will still require determined application. Moderate walks will seldom have steep climbs but if they do the climb will be taken at a relaxed pace.
