It was indeed a year of some important firsts. For the first time ever both our Women’s and Men’s Sevens Teams each won a World A MESSAGE Series Sevens tournament. The women captured gold in Sydney and the men took first in Singapore. Both teams also improved on their own Canada Sevens results with our women winning silver on home FROM THE soil and our men making it through to the quarterfinals. Speaking of Canada Sevens, Rugby Canada in 2017 began the process of securing the highly successful CHAIRMAN tournament for another four years. Canada Sevens is exposing rugby to more Canadians, generating new growth potential for the sport and becoming an important gathering place for the community. This past year saw the completion of the Al Charron Rugby Canada National Training Centre. This facility built through the generous support of the Government of Canada, the City of Langford and numerous private donors will house our various national team athletes. It is a state of the art centre that will allow our Canadian athletes to prepare for the rigors of global competition.

    CIS takes Rio: 158 athletes with CIS ties to compete at 2016 Olympic Games Aug. 15, 2016 TORONTO (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Wednesday 158 athletes associated with CIS member schools will compete for Canada at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. The CIS contingent, which represents over half of the 314 athletes on the 2016 Canadian Olympic Team, includes 81 current, incoming or former CIS student-athletes, and 77 athletes who have either competed in non-CIS sports, or studied at CIS institutions. “We are extremely proud of all our athletes competing at the Rio 2016 Olympics with ties to university sports in Canada,” said Graham Brown, chief executive officer of CIS. “Each of them epitomize the dedication and passion of our student-athletes nationwide and we wish them the best of luck as they strive for gold.” Kylie Masse (LaSalle, Ont.), the 2016 BLG Award winner as CIS Female Athlete of the Year, is one of seven current or future CIS athletes heading to Rio this summer. Masse, a swimmer heading into her third year with the University of Toronto, represented Canada at the 2015 Summer Universiade and is the Canadian record holder in the 100-metre backstroke.     OLYMPIC GAMES TOKYO 2020: WOMEN’S SESSION 1 STATS GENERAL STATISTICS Fiji’s Viniana Riwai scored the first women’s try of Tokyo 2020, touching down after two minutes and 50 seconds against France. A total of 32 tries and 202 points were scored in the first session of Tokyo 2020. This is slightly down on the 37 tries and 232 points scored in the first six matches of Rio 2016. The average winning margin was also down from Rio, at +21 points compared to +33. Australia scored the most points (48) and tries (eight) of the opening session in their 48-0 defeat of hosts Japan. Australia Emma Tonegato scored the first hat-trick of the women’s competition at Tokyo 2020. There was only one in the men’s competition, scored by Canada’s Connor Braid against hosts Japan as well. Seven players scored at least two tries in the opening session – Keyara Wardley (Canada), Kristi Kirshe (USA), Emma Tonegato, Demi Hayes, Maddison Levi (all Australia), Abbie Brown (Great Britain) and Michaela Blyde (New Zealand) Tonegato’s 15 points make her the top point-scorer in the opening session by two points from Canada captain Ghislaine Landry. Great Britain and New Zealand are the only teams with a perfect record of four wins from four in pool matches. Australia and USA are also both unbeaten, having won three and drawn 12-12 in their pool decider in Rio.
