KS4 Revision – Year 10 Parents: as you know, we are continuously evaluating ways to raise the achievements of our students. This year we are continuing to subscribe to SamLearning, a top quality eLearning service that has proven to improve exam results through exam practice and related revision. The sooner you start using it the better! To log on go to www.samlearning.com and key in:

JACK PETCHEY ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS – PRESENTATION EVENING

On Wednesday 8 December, nine of our students and their families and friends were invited to attend the Jack Petchey Braintree School Awards 2010. This was held at The Institute in Bocking. Students who went to this annual prestigious award were the previous nine winners from the beginning of the year. They are:

 Billy Wall Year 9  Charlie Little Year 9  Lewis Crawford Year 9  Marc Wingrove Year 11 (leaver)  Sam Doré Year 9  Verity Fisher Year 8  Leah Riley Year 9  Emily Davis Year 9  Jake Turley Year 9

All these students achieved something extra special, either for themselves or for others and were deservedly recognised by being chosen as winners for a Jack Petchey Achievement Award. Each student donated their £200 from the Jack Petchey Foundation to a charity or to our school to continue to help or benefit others youngsters.

The evening was a tremendous success and the presenter, Lee Thompson from the Jack Petchey Foundation, made the evening extra fun – he’s obviously done this before! Proud families and friends looked on as their children were called up on stage to receive their medallions from Nick Lee, Braintree District Police Commander and have their photograph taken with Cllr Anthony Shelton, Chairman, Braintree District Council. We also had two Year 11 students perform a moving dance piece, Dreaming with a Broken Heart, to which the audience gave a rapturous applause. This is a wonderful scheme for students to be rewarded for their outstanding efforts and achievements. If you know of any young person aged 11-16 who you think deserves to be a winner, please complete the nomination form in this newsletter.

Page 10 Notley High School Newsletter – Issue 308 - 21 January 2011 Safer Internet Day 2011

It’s more than a game, it’s your life!

Safer Internet Day is organised by INSAFE (www.saferinternet.org) in February and this school will again be taking part in it this year. The day is designed to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people across the world.

From cyberbullying to social networking, each year INSAFE aims to be at the forefront of emerging online issues and chooses a topic reflecting current concerns. This year, the theme is to look more closely at our “virtual lives” and discover how our real self lives the virtual experience.

On Tuesday 8 February the whole school will be involved, as it was last year, in using the first lesson of the day to take students through activities provided by INSAFE to teach them about the potential risks they face online and how to protect themselves. Today young people spend a good part of their lives on activities ranging from online gaming to social networking. In doing so they face multiple challenges related to their privacy, reputation and health.

A few key facts to contemplate*

NATRE Spirited Arts: ‘Art in Heaven’ Competition 2011

In RE at KS3 we are launching an extra curricular project called Spirited Arts. This is open to all pupils in year 7-11 in RE. Students will be finding more details in their RE lessons over the next few weeks. It involves students producing a piece of art on one of the three themes below. Stories of Truth

Every religion tells stories, but are they true? Do they tell us the truth? For younger pupils, this theme involves taking stories they love from religious traditions and expressing the key moments or ideas artistically. Start with any story: Jacob or Moses, the Guru or the Buddha, the Prophet or the Christ, stories told of creation, parable, paradox or meaning. Older pupils might add a question mark and use the stories of faith as starting points for their own ideas about truth. Or they might explore or question atheist or scientific stories as well as those that come from faith.

Spiritual Words

What words are the most spiritual for you? Peace? Promise? Truth? Love? Justice? Holiness? Prayer? Trust? Humanity? Unity? For some people, a verse from a sacred text will be the starting point for their ideas about spiritual words, whether it is Qur’an, Bible or Guru Granth Sahib. For others, a word has become spiritual because of its beauty or impact. Pupils might start with the words here, but winning work on this theme will explore the images and symbols that make the words powerful and spiritual, and enquire into the reasons why some words have the power to change the world.

God: Who? Where? How? If?

This competition has often asked: where is God? Who is God? Does God speak? This year, all these questions can be part of the theme, and the new focus is on your questions for God: Where are you, God? What are you like? Why are you invisible? How can we find you? Why can’t I find you? Where were you when evil happened? Where are the signs of your love? Are you real, or made up? What questions would you like to ask God, and how might a person who knows everything and loves everyone reply? This theme is just as much for atheists and agnostics as for believers in different faiths: the atheist may say: ‘Where is God? Nowhere at all.’

Entries should be not larger than A3 in size. Good digital photos of 3 D or larger entries are welcome. All entries must be given to your RE teacher by the end of the easter term. For more details see Mrs Parry or go to the website http://www.natre.org.uk/spiritedarts/2011.php ‐

Notley High School Newsletter – Issue 308 - 21 January 2011 Page 13 Reflections from Year 11 The Autumn Term at Notley High was a very busy one for Year 11 students. A main highlight for us was the Key Stage 4 Presentation Evening at which many current and previous Year 11’s received awards and recognition for their effort and achievement. In addition, the Braintree Sixth Form Open Evening welcomed Notley High students, and others, to learn about the education we might choose after Notley High and provided explanations and information about the courses available, how the Sixth Form works and the workload we should expect should we become Sixth Formers! Another helpful event was the timetable break out day which took place in December. The day included opening our mock results, useful revision sessions and an amusing quiz. Our exposure to the world of work also deserves a mention; the two weeks back in October in which each Year 11 student worked at a placement of their choice, proved to offer varying experiences and interesting stories! However, we are confident that the whole year group will agree, that the two weeks work experience was eye-opening and developed some of the skills required by employers. Of course we are looking forward to the new experiences this year will bring and we have just received £ GCSE English and Mathematics results since Christmas. 29 We look forward to the new term and the challenges 1/3 off your first ahead as we move towards our summer exams. Finally, we send our best wishes for the year ahead and hope 3 months you all enjoyed a refreshing Christmas break. £15 joining fee applies
