2 Message from the Mayor

Dear citizens of Pierrefonds-Roxboro, We are back with your long awaited newsletter, whose publication and distribution were interrupted due to the pandemic crisis we have been experiencing for over a year. Indeed, this crisis is not only the "Crisis of the Century" in our community, but also in the entire world! It has affected us in many ways, but it has also made us stronger! We can only emerge from this stronger and more united than ever, thanks to our resilience and our complicity. Spring brings not only colors and light, but also beautiful challenges and innovative projects to be carried out in our borough. Even though Mother Nature is being kind to us and the weather is looking good, we have been active for several weeks now to prepare for a possible second crisis which could be added to the pandemic crisis and which particularly affects our community, namely that of spring floods. As every year, we prefer to act rather than react! My colleagues on Council, my Borough and myself are committed to your peace of mind and your safety. Our municipal crews are working hard to monitor the situation very closely, to come up with solutions and to install the necessary equipment to protect the areas at risk. Our material and human resources have been increased in order to prevent possible flooding. I invite you to sign up for the City's Notification and Alert Service. This service is free and allows you to be notified by text message or email, in real time, of any emergency situation. Visit montreal.ca/en/notices-and-alerts to sign up. You can also follow us on our various communication channels, such as the Borough's Facebook page at facebook.com/pfds.rox or on the Web at montreal.ca/en/topics/flooding(select the Borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro) or by phone, at 311. I also invite you to visit my Facebook page: facebook.com/dimitriosjim.beis. On a more positive note, the Aquatic Complex, a project that has been close to my heart for many years, as you know, is now taking shape. One more step has been taken to make the dream come true. We are moving forward quietly but surely! The groundbreaking ceremony will be announced soon. Its location next to the Borough Hall and the Library, will not only improve the services offered to you, but also consolidate them in an inclusive way for your convenience! Everything has been well thought out so that everyone, children, youth, families and seniors, will feel at home. The Complex will be an innovative intergenerational space that will match your expectations. Still in the perspective of beautifying our spaces, innovative arrangements reflecting our diversity are planned in certain parks. They will of course be adapted to the restrictions related to the pandemic, so that families can enjoy them in complete safety. There will also be major work on boulevard de Pierrefonds in the western part of the borough, which will certainly hinder your movements. We are counting on your indulgence and understanding in the vicinity of the work area. In addition to the work that is done in collaboration with our staff, I will continue with my colleagues on Council to carry your voice to other governmental bodies in order to promote the issues that go beyond the jurisdiction of our Borough. Do not hesitate to share with us your ideas, your desires, but also your concerns! We will continue to work hand in hand to make our beautiful borough a rich, diversified and welcoming place to live. I don't need to remind you that I miss our meetings and interactions, dear residents! Even if we can no longer meet in person for the moment, we plan to resume our Citizens' Saturdays virtually very soon. Stay healthy and safe. With vaccines being administered more and more to our population, I am convinced that "It's going to be okay"! Together, we continue to move forward and thrive in Pierrefonds Roxboro!

3 Major Projects

AQUATIC AND RECREATIONAL COMPLEX A new step has just been taken towards the realization of the long-awaited project to build an aquatic and recreational complex in Pierrefonds-Roxboro as preparatory work has recently been conducted on the site of the future complex. The Aquatic Complex will be built on the land adjacent to the Borough Hall located at 13665, boulevard de Pierrefonds, which became vacant following the demolition of the old Pierrefonds Arena. Included in Ville de Montréal's 2020-2022 three-year capital expenditure program, which foresees investments of $71 million for the construction of indoor aquatic facilities, the construction of this new complex will allow the youth and adults of Pierrefonds-Roxboro to have access, in close proximity, to a modern and universally accessible structure and equipment. Following a call for tenders launched by the City in December 2019, the firm Héloïse Thibodeau architecte inc. in collaboration with CIMA+ S.E.N.C and Agence Relief Design.ca, was appointed to carry out the preparatory studies, the plans and specifications, the public call for tenders and the supervision of the work for the future aquatic complex. The cost for these professional services is over $3.1 million. The drilling work required for the geotechnical and hydrogeological studies was carried out by the firm CIMA+ from February 10 to 18. Construction is expected to begin in 2023 for a planned opening in 2025. Follow us on Facebook to receive news of the project throughout its development.

RÉSEAU EXPRESS MÉTROPOLITAIN (REM) A new light rail transit system, the REM will eventually have 26 stations, one of which will serve the Montréal-Trudeau International Airport and will cross the greater Montréal area over 67 km in addition to the 71 km of the current metro system. The REM is the largest public transit project undertaken in Québec in the last fifty years. Currently in the construction phase, the first trains are expected to start running in 2022 from the South Shore to Bonaventure-Central Station. Then, the other branches of the network will be gradually put into service in 2023-2024. Open 20 hours a day, 7 days a week, the REM will provide reliable and frequent service during the day, the evening and weekend. All REM stations will be universally accessible to facilitate travel for people with reduced mobility, cyclists, parents with strollers and travelers carrying luggage. The REM waiting areas will be located in enclosed and ventilated buildings. This year, the Borough is renewing its efforts to offer citizens of all ages a breath of fresh air throughout the summer. Who are the artists you might meet in a park or near a seniors' residence? A duo of "environmentalist" clowns, a 10-piece brass band playing New Orleans music, circus performers, goofy characters, music from the Roaring Twenties... and other fun surprises! Follow the Borough's Facebook page! To respect sanitary measures and to avoid large gatherings, we cannot reveal the locations where the shows will be presented.
