Trailing 6-4 in the top of the ninth inning, Darren Seferina pulled the Goldeyes within one run on a sacrifice fly. With Winnipeg down to its final out, Kyle Martin hit a solo home run to centre field that tied the game. In the top of the 10 th , Zack Costello singled home the lead run with two outs and was followed by a two-run triple from Raul Navarro. Cory Thompson pitched a scoreless bottom of the 10 th to earn the save. Kane County scored twice in the second and once in the third to build a 3-0 lead. Max Murphy put the Goldeyes on the board with a solo home run leading of f the fourth. Winnipeg rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead on a Milton Ramos double and a pair of Cougars’ wild pitches. Jeffrey Baez hit a two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to put the Cougars in front 6-4. Ken Frosch picked up the win in relief. Eduard Reyes started for the Goldeyes and took a no-decision, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings. Reyes walked four and struck out three. ALL-TIME AGAINST THE DOGS: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 16-20 all-time against the Chicago Dogs, including an 8-10 record at Impact Field. The Dogs are in their fourth season of existence, and are based out of the Village of Rosemont, Illinois. Rosemont is located 18 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. The Dogs play at state-of-the-art Impact Field, a $60 Million facility with a seating capacity of 6,300. The Dogs were one of the six teams to participate in the shortened, 60-game 2020 American Association season. Chicago finished with a record of 26-32 in 2020. In 2019, the Dogs were 59-41, which was good for the third-best record in the American Association. The Dogs were 45-54 during their expansion season in 2018, finishing 34-27 following an 11-27 start. Former Major League player and manager Butch Hobson is in his fourth year as Dogs’ manager. Hobson enjoyed an eight-year playing career in the Majors with the Boston Red Sox, California Angels, and New York Yankees. In 1977, Hobson hit 30 home runs and had 112 RBI for Boston. Hobson is in his 32 nd season managing in professional baseball, and skippered the Red Sox from 1992-94. Hobson has extensive experience managing in independent baseball, and is one of only five managers in the history of the industry with more than 1,000 wins. Hobson led the Nashua Pride (Atlantic League/Can-Am League) for eight seasons, including an Atlantic League championship in 2000 and a Can-Am League title in 2007. Hobson also guided the Atlantic League’s Lancaster Barnstormers for six years, winning a championship in 2014. In 2017, Hobson led the Low-A Midwest League’s Kane County Cougars (Arizona Diamondbacks) to a 72-65 record. SERIES MATCHUP: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 5-6, in sixth place in the American Association North Division, and 2.5 games behind the Fargo- Moorhead RedHawks. The Goldeyes just won two of three at Kane County. The Goldeyes are eighth in the American Association in hitting (.255), 10 th in pitching (5.97), and fourth in fielding (.980). The Chicago Dogs are 7-5, tied for second in the North, and 1.0 game behind the RedHawks. Chicago just won two of three from the Sioux City Explorers at Impact Field. The Dogs are 11 th in the league in batting (.227), second in pitching (3.66), and 10 th in defence (.972). This is the second of four head-to-head series this season between Winnipeg and Chicago. The Goldeyes are 1-2 against the Dogs in 2021. PROJECTED UPCOMING PITCHING MATCHUPS TONIGHT’S STARTERS: The Goldeyes go with right- hander Joey Gonzalez who is 1-1 with a 4.09 ERA in two 6/1 at CHI-1: RHP Jorge Gonzalez (0-1, 4.50) vs. RHP Garrett Christman (1-0, 6.23) 6/1 at CHI-2: TBA vs. LHP Jacob Dahlberg (0-1, 2.53) starts this season. Gonzalez picked up the win at Milwaukee last Tuesday, pitching 6.0 shutout innings on five hits. Gonzalez walked none and struck out six. Prior to this season, Gonzalez last pitched in 2019 for two Houston Astros affiliates. Gonzalez was a combined 4-2 with two saves and a 3.58 ERA in 28 relief appearances for the Low-A Midwest League’s Quad Cities River Bandits and the High-A Carolina League’s Fayetteville Woodpeckers. Gonzalez did not allow an earned run in 15 of his 28 outings. Gonzalez was drafted by the Astros in the 28 th round in 2018 out of Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. During his junior season in 2018, Gonzalez was 8-3 with a 2.07 ERA in 78.1 innings for the Hatters. The 2.07 ERA ranked 15 th in the NCAA among pitchers with at least 70.0 innings. Gonzalez is in his third season of professional baseball and is 9-5 lifetime with five saves and a 3.16 ERA in 45 appearances, two of them as a starting pitcher. Gonzalez has averaged 9.1 strikeouts per nine innings as a professional. Today will be Gonzalez’s first career appearance against Chicago, as well as his first career appearance at Impact Field. The Dogs go with right-hander Jordan Kipper who is 0-1 with a 10.38 ERA in two starts this season. Kipper took the loss at Fargo-Moorhead last Wednesday, allowing seven earned runs on six hits in 3.1 innings. Kipper walked one and struck out three. Kipper took a no-decision at Winnipeg in his season debut on May 21 st , allowing three earned runs in 5.1 innings. Kipper pitched for the Constellation Energy League’s Eastern Reyes del Tigre in 2020 where he posted a 4.20 ERA in 12 relief appearances. In 2019, Kipper was 2-1 with a 1.50 ERA in three starts and five relief appearances at two levels of the Baltimore Orioles’ organization. Kipper struck out 11 and walked one in 12.0 innings for the Short Season-A New York-Penn League’s Aberdeen IronBirds and the Orioles’ Rookie Gulf Coast League affiliate. Kipper was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the ninth round in 2014 out of Texas Christian University (Fort Worth, Texas). Kipper was traded from the Angels to the Orioles on May 6 th , 2017 in exchange for right-handed pitcher Damien Magnifico. Kipper reached the Triple-A level in 2017, and has reached the Double-A level three times. Kipper is in his eighth season of professional baseball, and is 33-33 lifetime with a 4.05 ERA in 119 games, 81 of them as a starting pitcher. Kipper is 0-0 with a 5.06 ERA in one career start against Winnipeg. Today will be Kipper’s first career appearance at Impact Field. GOLDEYES MANAGER: Rick Forney is now in his 16 th season as Goldeyes’ manager, and his 25 th overall within the organization. During his first 15 years at the helm, the Goldeyes have posted a .544 overall winning percentage (784-657), 11 winning seasons, nine playoff appearances, and an American Association-record three championships. Forney was voted American Association Manager of the Year in 2011, and again in 2020 after guiding a team that played all of its games on the road. Forney’s .551 winning percentage in the American Association (2011-20) is the fourth-highest in league history (there have been 58 total American Association managers through the 2020 season). Forney pitched professionally for 10 years, including four seasons with the Goldeyes. During his playing career, Forney was 89-56 (.614) with a 3.63 ERA, and reached the Triple-A level in 1995. TENNESSEE BOUND: Due to the ongoing closure of the Canada/US border, the Winnipeg Goldeyes have partnered with the Jackson Generals professional baseball club to host Winnipeg at The Ballpark at Jackson to begin the 2021 season. The Generals were a Double-A Southern League affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners, and Arizona Diamondbacks from 1998-2019. The franchise hosted the Southern League All-Star Game on two occasions, and won four Southern League championships. The Generals are located in Jackson, Tennessee, which is 208 kilometres southwest of Nashville and 140 kilometres northeast of Memphis. GOLDEYES SIGN PEREZ, GONZALEZ TO INJURED LIST: The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed right-handed pitcher Pete Perez on Friday. Perez last pitched in 2019 where he posted a 2.51 ERA with 30 strikeouts and only 10 walks in 32.1 innings for the Texas AirHogs. Perez pitched briefly for the Goldeyes in 2018, and has averaged 8.8 strikeouts per nine innings in six professional seasons. The Goldeyes also placed outfielder Jay Gonzalez on the Injured List, retroactive to May 23 rd .

There was a chance both could have gone undrafted and thus would have been tasked with the tough decision of signing a free agent deal capped at $20,000 or returning to school for their senior year. “I didn’t know if I was going to get drafted,” Wu-Yelland said in a phone interview. “My agent was kind of telling me that it might happen, it might not. Just be ready for anything.” Said Drohan, “I knew the scouting report on me was I have the stuff to shoot up on draft boards but I haven’t really put it together yet. I felt like I was doing that this year and then once [the season] got shut down, that definitely played into the stress of it, like, ‘Did I show enough?’ ” As it turned out, both players showed enough. I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.
