Between these markers in London’s history, which span some 300 years, we see the arrival, ascendancy and subsequent dominance of Saxon migrants over the indigenous population of Romano-Celts. An important aspect of this event, the mechanics of which have yet to be fully understood and explained, was the replacement of the native language by Anglo-Saxon (Old English). The authority of ‘English’ over the native tongue is most evident in the distribution of Saxon place-names across England, which predominate over names of Roman or Celtic origin. This is well evident in the London region, where few names reflect a Romano-Celtic past. Yet archaeology has shown the abundance of Roman settlement activity around London. On the Surrey side, settlement activity has been located at a number of places, such as Croydon, Merton, Carshalton, Beddington, Putney and Peckham. Most likely these settlements were recognised by their own particular name, along with others places that are suggested by the scatter of Roman pottery, coin and tile etc., found across this part of London.

THE PLANNING GROUP Report on the letters the group has written to Guildford Borough Council about planning applications which we considered during the period 1 January to 30 June 2020 During this period the Planning Group consisted of Alistair Smith, John Baylis, Amanda Mullarkey, John Harrison, David Ogilvie, Peter Coleman and John Wood. In addition Ian Macpherson has been invaluable as a corresponding member. Abbreviations: AONB: Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty AGLV: Area of Great Landscape Value GBC: Guildford Borough Council HTAG: Holy Trinity Amenity Group LBC: Listed Building Consent NPPF: National Planning Policy Framework SANG: Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace SPG: Supplementary Planning Guidance In view of the Covid 19 pandemic the Planning Group has not been able to meet every three weeks at the GBC offices. We have, therefore, been conducting meetings on Zoom which means the time taken to consider each of the applications we have looked at has increased. In addition, this six month period under review has been the busiest for the group for four years and thus the workload has inevitably increased significantly. During the period there were a potential 993 planning applications we could have looked at. We sifted through these applications and considered in detail 89 of them. The Group wrote 41 letters to the Head of Planning Services on a wide range of individual planning applications. Of those applications 13 were approved as submitted; 8 were approved after amending plans were received and those plans usually took our concerns into account; 5 were withdrawn; 10 were refused; and, at the time of writing, 5 applications had not been decided.

  • Dear Members of GCCA the Summer Term Has
Dear Members of GCCA The summer term has begun and with it comes my apologies for the distinct lack of a newsletter last term – however, things have been a little busy, as you will see. The Cathedral Choir had a fabulous Lent term – highlights included the liturgies of Epiphany-tide Procession, Candlemas, a visit to Croydon Minster for our girl choristers where they sang Evensong jointly with the girl choristers and adults of Croydon Minster Choir, Ash Wednesday, a fundraising concert for their tour fund by the girl choristers at St. Nicolas’ Church, Guildford, the girl choristers’ residential weekend at St. Catherine’s School, Bramley, complete with concert, the services of Holy Week and Easter and a five day choir tour to Sanlúcar la Mayor, Cordoba and Sevilla, Spain. As this term begins, twelve of our choristers have just taken part in the English Touring Opera Production of Tosca at G-Live on 2 May, and I have just returned from giving the opening organ recital in the tenth international organ festival in Palma, Mallorca. For me, a personal highlight of last term was the news that I have been accorded the honour of being made a Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music, and this will be presented to me later this calendar year. I hope you enjoy this edition of the newsletter and look forward to seeing you at any of our regular services. Choral Evensong is sung daily (except during choir holidays) on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 5.30 p.m. and on Sundays at 6.00 p.m.
