From the desk of Fr. Kyle Kowalczyk ST. MAX SCHOOL TEACHING OPPORTUNITY WORD OF GOD SUNDAY

I remember a buddy of mine in high school who was an We are currently looking to for a acclaimed atheist (I didn’t have a lot of atheist friends, just 2nd Grade Teacher and an him) told me that he had read the entire bible… twice! That Extended—day Teacher was quite the indictment, because, of course, I hadn’t even read it once! At that moment I made it my goal to read the entire Bible! About 3 years later… I finally started (not sure Please contact us if you or someone you know may what took so long, maybe I was looking for the right be interested in teaching at St. Maximilian Kolbe. translation) and about two years later… I finished (hey, it’s a big book)! Call 763.972.2528 or email

As I read, I began to see how all those stories that I knew as a [email protected] kid fit together. There were a lot of “Ah ha!” moments. Obviously, there were many parts I had never read or heard before as well, and wondered how I had made it twenty-some years without anyone telling me about them. I made many marks and underlines and circles in that Bible, identifying the verses that really spoke to me or moved me. (I wish I still had it to see what those things were.) SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES A few years later, I read the Bible again. The funny thing was WE’RE ALL CALLED TO SERVE—USE THE GIFTS GOD GAVE YOU AND GET INVOLVED that there were so many parts that I didn’t remember at all. Like, was this part in the Bible the first time, or did they add ST. MAX SCHOOL HELPERS to it? But more than that, there were a whole different set of verses and stories that I marked because they spoke to me. It If you enjoy getting involved with the school was like an entirely new experience. and being around the kiddos, then this is a great service opportunity for you! Some years ago, I made the commitment to read the Bible every year. This of course is in addition to my regular reading Our St. Max School is looking for at Mass or in the Breviary or in prayer time. And guess Lunch & Recess Helpers what… I always get something new out of it. It’s because I’m a Christian. How am I to be a transportation, school expenses, rent and Christian if I don’t know Christ? It was St. who said many other things. SAINT OF THE WEEK

SAINT JOSEPH CALASANZ 1556—1648

Feast Day—August 25th

This Spaniard studied law at the University of Lerida and was ordained a priest in 1583, despite his father’s hope that he would be a soldier. He became vicar general of a Spanish diocese, but in 1592 left for , where he joined the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine and worked with neglected children. In 1597 he established the first free school in Rome with three other priests. This work led him to found the Clerks Regular of the Religious (or Pious) Schools, known as Piarists. He overcame internal and external opposition and served as superior general of the order. He was canonized in 1767, and in 1948 Pius XII named him the of Christian schools. He is also a patron of students.

AN INVITATION

Since joining the parish of St. Maximilian Kolbe about 5 years ago (after moving to Rockford), we discovered the two stunningly beautiful churches of St. Peter and St. Joseph, along with solid teaching in the deposit of our Faith, first with Fr. LaLiberte and now with Fr. Kowalczyk. As a family, we desired three things: reverence for the holy sacrifice of the Mass, a priest who loves and lives his faith, and a community who desires to grow and learn beside us as we work out our salvation. We definitely found all three here.

Growing up in a Catholic family (where my dad discerned out of the seminary prior to marrying my mom and having a great aunt who was a Sister and witness of exuberant joy in living her vocation) in the 70’s and 80’s, my parents were concerned about us kids learning the Faith. Formation in the faith (“CCD class”) was significantly lacking so my dad pulled us from classes and taught us the Baltimore Catechism at home. We thought, at the time, he was weird, and we sure disliked having to memorize all the answers to the questions! But I am so glad that he did that, and that my mom made us pray the rosary every night during Lent on our knees, and we were taught to never ever miss Sunday Mass (and to go to confession right away if we did). We learned that God made us to “know Him, to love Him, and to serve Him in this world, and to be happy with Him forever in heaven.” These truths of our Catholic faith were not only taught to us, they were lived out in our family life throughout the year. We drove to family baptisms, first communions, confirmations, weddings, and funerals. We had a “rhythm” of living, which I didn’t fully comprehend until well into my adult life. My dad’s last thoughts he shared before his passing 18 years ago were, “Never stop seeking the Truth.” Each of our kids now receives this message from us.

In this culture of “me, more, now!” we need faithful priests, like Fr. Kowalczyk, and our faith community to draw us closer to God and to teach and witness to us what is good, true and beautiful. My experience as a St. Max parishioner has been similar to my childhood years, especially since Fr. Kowalczyk became our pastor two years ago. With only 1/3 of self-professed Catholics believing in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist (and seeing many family and friends “fall away”), we knew we wanted a priest who offered a reverent Mass, one that draws us into the mystery and beauty of the sacrifice of Jesus on Calvary. I believe Fr. K, through the Holy Spirit, compassionately invites us to a deeper encounter with Our Lord and Savior at each Mass through his insightful teaching homilies, chanting and sung prayers, offering the Extraordinary Form on special days such as First Saturdays, and praying the Mass ad orientem (facing Jesus with us) once per weekend. Inviting us to receive Our Lord, body blood soul and divinity, while kneeling (in the pew and now at the communion rail) is beautiful. When I kneel, my heart wells up like a little child as my heart proclaims, “My Lord and My God!”

Expanded hours for adoration has been wonderful as well (especially last year during the shut-down). Spending an hour with Our Lord is absolutely life-changing. Our Lord leads us in ways that we can only dream about. We have been so very thankful for this! Fr. K is truly a holy priest, who sets aside time for prayer and rest each week, listening for God’s will to come alive in his heart. He can be seen praying in front of the Blessed Sacrament often and has always offered extra masses and expanded times for confession. He’s always open to learning, reading good books, going on retreat, and even taking up golf when he didn’t want to so he can further participate in the life of our community. He shows us the “right order” of life: Jesus, Others, Self (JOY).

Lastly, the St. Max community has been one filled with a love of God and service to others. As our family is making a big move to Texas, we are forever grateful for this parish community and to Fr. Kowalczyk for his steadfast love for Christ and His Blessed Mother. We are honored and privileged to have been a small part of this beautiful parish. We will hold you in our prayers and we ask for yours during these confusing times. Whether you’re a cradle Catholic, a convert to the Faith or someone who is just beginning to see all Our Lord so desires for you, I encourage you to say “yes” to the invitation which Fr. Kowalczyk is calling each of us to: humbly and reverently seek the Truth! St. Maximilian Kolbe, pray for us.

~ Susan M. Robinson

“No one in the world can change Truth. What we can do and should do is to seek truth and to serve it when we have found it. The real conflict is the inner conflict. Beyond armies of occupation and the hecatombs [e.g. the sacrifice of many victims] of extermination camps, there are two irreconcilable enemies in the depth of every soul: good and evil, sin and love. And what use are the victories on the battlefield if we ourselves are defeated in our innermost personal selves?” ~ Maximilian Kolbe
