Adams State College Team Notes: The Grizzlies were led by 197-pound, NCAA Division II Champion Luke McPeek at the national championships, who went 4-0 in claiming his fi rst-ever national title and his third All-American accolade (two at Adams State, one at New Mexico High- lands). McPeek, ranked No. 4 entering the DII Championships, defeated top-ranked and previously unbeaten Dan Scanlan of Lime- stone (S.C.), 14-12, in overtime in the championship match in come-from-behind fashion. For his eff orts, McPeek was also tabbed as the Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament by the NWCA. McPeek’s championship paved the way for an eighth-place team fi nish for the Grizzlies with 42.5 points, their highest since 2009 when they wrapped up a string of three consecutive fi fth-place fi nishes. Also earn- ing All-American accolades for ASC were junior Ryan Fillingame and senior Josh Hensley. Fillingame’s All-American honors were his fi rst as he placed third at 133 pounds. Fillingame won his fi rst two bouts before falling to eventual DII Champion Trevor Franklin of Upper Iowa in the championship semfi nal, but came back to win two matches in the consolation bracket for third. Hensley earned his second All-American honors and fi rst at 149 pounds with a seventh-place fi nish. Adams State was also represented by sophomore Jerry Huff at 125 pounds, junior Max Ortega at 141 pounds and sophomore Justin Samora at 165 pounds.

Chadron State College Team Notes: Jordan Debus at 184 pounds went 0-2 at the NCAA Division II Championships in Pueblo, Colo.

Colorado Mesa University Team Notes: With All-American status already clinched, Dylan Granard and Nick Petersen looked to place themselves in the top-fi ve with wins early on Saturday at the NCAA Division II Championships in Pueblo, Colo. Granard faced four-time All-American Tad Mer- ritt of St. Cloud State in his consolation quarterfi nal match. Both competitors worked to a close match for the fi rst two periods. Merritt stepped up his intensity and ended up pinning Granard in 6:15. The loss sent Granard to the 7th-8th Place match. Merritt wound up taking third place in the tournament. In the 7th-8th place match, Granard faced a familiar foe in Minnesota State’s Cody Quinn. Gra- nard and Quinn competed in club wrestling together back in Washington. In the NCAA Championships, Granard lost to Quinn 3-2 and sett led for eighth place in the tournament. At 184 pounds, Nick Petersen batt led Ouachita Baptist’s Dallas Smith in the consolation semi’s. The two batt led through near fall points for each but in the end Smith was able to ride Petersen out through the third period and prevailed 11-5. Smith went on to take sixth place. In the 7th-8th Place match, Petersen faced Wisconsin-Parkside’s Matt Gille. The two traded escapes through regulation and headed to overtime. Petersen was able to score a takedown, roughly 40 seconds into the period to earn the seventh-place award.

Colorado School of Mines Team Notes: fi nished 10th at the Super Region 4/RMAC Championships with 15.5 team points to wrap up its season.

Colorado State University - Pueblo Team Notes: The ThunderWolves fi nished 33rd at the NCAA Division II Championships, scoring 3.0 points at the two-day tournament.

Fort Hays State University Team Notes: All six of Fort Hays State’s wrestlers that qualifi ed for the NCAA Division II Championships were eliminated on the fi rst day of competition. The wrestlers went 3-12 on Friday, with the only wins coming in fi rst round consolation matches for C.J. Napier, Walker Clarke and Justin Glenn. Collin Hase, Derek Koehn and Tanner Kriss all went 0-2.

Grand Canyon University Team Notes: Grand Canyon fi nished tied for third place at the NCAA Division II Championships, scoring 58 points. Kyle McCrite won the 125-pound title, while at 174 pounds, Victor Carazo took top honors.

New Mexico Highlands University Team Notes: The Cowboys ended their season at the NCAA Division II Super Regional 4/RMAC Championships and fi nished the meet in 11th place, with 8.50 points.

San Francisco State University Team Notes: Three SF State wrestlers came up short in their quest for national glory last weekend at the NCAA Division II Champion- ships as Julian Perez (133), Dylan Phillipy (149) and Isaiah Jimenez (165) were eliminated on the fi rst day of competition. Despite the setbacks, the Gators provided some thrilling moments, including Phillipy’s 3-0 opening round victory over Gannon’s Ethan Swope, who wound up placing sixth at 149, followed by a close 7-6 defeat in the quarterfi nals to eventual national runner-up John Hagerty of Marysville. In addition, Jimenez gave St. Cloud State’s Tad Merritt all he could handle in the second consolation bout at 165. However, Merritt prevailed by a slim 2-1 margin in the fi rst tie-breaker and ended up with a third-place fi nish overall. The 2011-12 campaign marked the 49th consecutive year that the Gators have qualifi ed at least one wrestler for the national meet.

University of Nebraska at Kearney Team Notes: For the second time in program history, the Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team has won the NCAA Division II National Championship. On Saturday night in Pueblo, Colo., the Lopers tallied 107.0 team points to hold off a huge charge by top-ranked St. Cloud State, Minn. (95.0). This marks the Lopers 11th straight top 10 fi nish; UNK’s other national title came in 2008. By winning, UNK also keeps the national title in Nebraska. Since 2004, Nebraska-Omaha has six fi rst place fi nishes, the Lopers two and Central Okla- homa one (2007). The SCSU Huskies won their fi rst 10 matches on Saturday to not only catch UNK but also hold a brief lead. The two teams entered the fi nals with 91.0 points apiece but the Huskies lost the 133-pound match when defending national champ Trevor Franklin of Upper Iowa edged Andrew Pokorny, 3-2. UNK then won three straight national titles to secure the team title.Later, SCSU won the 184 title and lost, in sudden victory, the 285 title match. At 141, top-ranked Dalton Jensen (Missouri Valley, Ia.) led Newberry’s B.J.Young 2-1 midway through the second period. Building up a point of riding time, Jensen managed to turn Young and record a fall at 4:18. Jensen beat third-ranked Chism Fink of Augustana, 7-4, to reach the fi nals for a second straight year. Winning 20 of his last 21 matches, Jensen fi nished his senior season 30-4. Up next, junior Raufeon Stots (Houston, Texas) faced unranked and true freshman John Hagerty of Maryville (Mo.) in the 149 fi nals. Stots used two takedowns to grab the early lead before Hagerty went to one knee to keep Stots away from his legs. Hagerty took a couple of shots but Stots fought them off to win by a 5-4 score. The former Labett e C.C. All-American reached the fi nals thanks to a 6-1 decision over Ky Corley of Central Oklahoma. After medically redshirting last winter, and competing unatt ached fi rst semester, he closed out the 2011-12 season with a 30-6 combined record. Finally, senior T.J. Hepburn (East Hampton, Conn.) fi nished off one of the best careers in school history by pinning Jarrod Shaw of West Liberty State (W.V.) at 2:17 to win the 157 national title. A three-time All-American, Hepburn goes 36-3 as a senior, ending on a 26-match win streak. He also fi n- ishes 118-16 as a Loper. To reach the fi nals, he needed overtime to beat top-ranked and undefeated Dillon Bera of Wisconsin-Parkside, 4-2. UNK had four other All-Americans in senior Ross Brunkhardt (third/184), senior Joey Wilson (fourth/165), sophomore Mark Fiala (eighth/174) and redshirt freshman Kevin Barrett (fourth/285). Now a two-time All-American, Brunkhardt (Merino, Colo.) lost 3-1 to SCSU’s Derek Skala, the eventual national champ, in the semifi nals. He came back to beat Mitch Schultz of Upper Iowa, 4-2, for the second time in the tournament to place third. Wilson (Half Moon Bay, Calif.), also an All-American again, fell to the eventual national champ, Mike Williams of UNC-Pembroke, 2-1, in the semifi nals. He beat Matt Vandermeer of Division II newcomer Lake Erie (OH), 5-2, before falling to SCSU’s Tad Merrit, 3-0, in the third place bout. On Friday, Wilson scored a key 5-3 win over the top-ranked Merritt . In his semifi nal match, Barrett (Boys Town H.S.) lost a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to now two-time national champ Matt Meuleners of Northern State. With UNK trailing in the team race, Barrett pinned Zach Rosol of Upper Iowa at 2:22 to tie things up at 91.0. After upsett ing fourth-ranked Jacob Southwick of Ashland (OH) on Friday, Barrett lost to him by a 1-0 score for third place. Not able to crack the national rankings all season, the UNO transfer ends 2012 with a 27-9 mark (14 falls). Finally, Fiala (Seward) lost to Western State’s Elliott Copeland, 9-5, and to Travis McKillop of Pitt -Johnstown, 7-0, on Saturday. He did win twice to earn All-American status and score some key team points.

Western State College Team Notes: Western State fi nished with 12.5 points at the NCAA Division II Championships, good for a 25th-place fi nish.
