The origins of Broomstick lace date back to the pioneer days. Women, while travelling in covered wagons west would use a crude hook and the end of a broomstick or dowel. In the 60’s and 70’s is was reborn into a style of crochet called “jiffy lace”. The basic premise of the style is using a large or dowel and a that corresponds to your . Those of us that got hooked on the ‘condo’ style of knitting will have the large knitting kneedles.. So pull them out and lets get started…

Broomstick Lace is a repeat of 4 stitches. 4 x the number of Stitches + one for the base row.

Slip the Loop onto the needle

Continue across the row

Slip the loops off of the Large needle

Pick up the first four loops on your crochet hook.

Single Crochet through all four loops

Chain Three

Place Three double crochet’s in the same space as the single crochet.

Pickup four more loops and place 4 Double Crochet’s into the centre. Repeat.

Making A scarf… Chain 60 + 1 for your turning row. Single Croche two rows to set the base of your scarf. Begin BroomStick. Continue until your scarf is the length you want. Single Crochet Two Rows to match your base row.
