March 2014

Dear Friends,

March contains many milestones; to the Christian the most prevalent are the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday which this year is on March the 5 th and Mothering Sunday – March 30 th .

Lent consists of 40 weekdays (i.e. Monday to Saturday inclusive) devoted to fasting and penitence in commemoration of Christ’s fasting in the wilderness, and in the Anglican Church it ends on Easter Eve. It is during this time that Christians have in the past been encouraged to ‘give something up’ (most commonly chocolate biscuits!!) in allusion to Christ’s fasting. More recently we have been urged to take up something of a charitable nature - this need not involve money, rather than give something up, this is still very much a sacrifice but which gives some benefit somewhere other than our waistlines. Please give this aspect some consideration during Lent; if others see you doing something positive who knows where it will end? The whole world knows that traditionally we give something up for Lent, but do they know why?

Mothering Sunday encourages us to give thanks for our mothers, but more importantly for the love that most of us receive or received from them. There can be no better example of God’s enduring and uncompromising love for us than the love we see in our mothers - or put it another way - if our mothers can love us and care for us so much, how much more will be shown to us by God? Do try to join us on Mothering Sunday if you can.

With my prayers and best wishes.

Ron

By the time this newsletter drops into your box the half-term break will be well behind us, and our Year 6 children will have heard the outcomes of their applications for high school. How time flies!

Speaking of time flying, here are three dates for the diary: Friday 7 March, 2:30pm at Wilby Village Hall a repeat performance of our children’s fabulous turn at the ‘Celebration of Schools’ Music’ at Snape Maltings the previous Tuesday. Everyone from the local community is very welcome. Saturday 22 March, 10am -12 noon at the school – Jumble Sale (donations welcome from appx. 10th March onwards) Saturday 12th July time tbc – Summer Fayre

Wilby is participating in the ‘Nord Pas de Calais Project’, which aims to facilitate links between schools in and France. Our Year 5 and 6 children have been designing a project which will improve their language skills as well their understanding of French culture, history and environment. During March we’ll be hosting some visitors from our French school, followed a week later by two of our staff travelling to them.

Wilby works with other groups of schools in the interest of pooling resources and raising standards for all our pupils. One group is the ‘Stradbroke Pyramid’ – which includes the six primary schools within the catchment of (and also including) Stradbroke High School. The high school is hosting six weeks of advanced sessions for those children working towards Level 6 in Literacy.

Another such group is the ‘Suffolk School Improvement Group’ which also includes the primary schools in Eye, Hoxne, Mendham, Thorndon and Cedars Park (Stowmarket). A number of high-attaining children from across this group will be attending a 12-week programme for Level 6 Maths, hosted by Hartismere High School.

In February a team of eleven children represented Wilby in an inter-school basketball competition – reaching the semi-finals! Well done Team Wilby! Other varied events during February included a Valentine’s Disco, a Parents Forum, a visit by the school nurse and a session for parents on E-safety.

The school would welcome expressions of interested from local people who might be able to help with practical jobs around the site.

We still have a few places across school and would welcome visits from prospective pu- pils and their parents. We are aiming to launch our new website before the end of term so we can share even more of our school with you. We look forward to seeing you at an event or for a visit.

Hello Everybody!

The Hall Committee met on 23 rd January .

Maggie Berry, new to the village, has kindly undertaken to do some of the secretarial work for the hall. She is willing to help whenever she can. We welcome her and look forward to the time when she becomes one of the hardworking committee.

Recently Gwen and Victor cleared the store cupboardwhich Kenny then painted and erected a shelf donated by Victor. Several of us decorated the hall for the Valentine dance.

Tim patched up the car park path near the pond. Barbara Barker and Tim Askew each have parts of the old Wilby Swan sign which Kenny is inspecting so we can decide what to do with them. We discussed Phase 2 which mainly consists of work we could not afford in Phase 1. We lean on Debbie to ask about a defibrillator. She and Carol check the solar panels. Matthew is our link with the Parish Council. Victor designs very interesting informative and attractive leaflets and posters for the hall.

We are conscious that advertising is difficult. Carol is busily designing a page on face book to draw attention to the Hall and its uses. Tim and Todd are investigating banners. Now the Hall is well equipped for parties, talks, films and numerous activities. Les and Vic know all about running the electrical facilities. Both the kitchen and the bar have washing-up ma- chines to save time. Vic has installed special coolers for the beer. The china and cutlery are new as are the cookers and cupboards.

The next Village Lunch by the LADYBIRDS, with bar and draw, is 12.30pm on Tuesday, 25 th March.

Where ever you live come and see what the big hall has to offer people living in East Anglia.

Do ring Gwen 01728 638 357 or Marian 01379 384 358; email address [email protected] to make arrangements to view. Sue Ryder is looking for reliable volunteers to support the Suffolk Dementia Advisers Service delivered by an expert team at Age UK, Suffolk. The service is offered to individuals who have been diagnosed with dementia, providing information, advice and guidance to enable them to live independently in their own homes for as long as possible. Due to the high demand we urgently require more volunteers, particularly in Ipswich, Babergh and Mid-Suffolk areas. If you like the sound of what we are aiming to achieve, why not get involved and volunteer with us? We will give you the training and support you need to assist us in genuinely making a difference to people’s lives. Deanery Ash Wednesday Service 7pm, 5 th March at Laxfield This is a new idea within the Deanery of Hoxne to which St Lawrence’s, Brundish belongs. Churchgoers from 22 parishes across the deanery will meet at Laxfield to note the first day of Lent. Everyone will be very welcome to join us.

Much better! After last month’s miserable news about so many people being unwell, here is some good news. Canon Graham Noble is feeling very much better and will resume taking services before Easter. Although Ron Orams didn’t stop taking services, he too is feeling very much better. Likewise Brundish’s director of music, choirmaster, organist and Lay Elder, Michael Spencer. He is feeling much stronger and is back amongst us. Thank God for all this. However the next article is something not so good to hear.

Susan in hospital Everyone will be upset to hear that Reverend Susan Loxton, the vicar of our neighbouring Sancroft Benefice and the Rural Dean is ill in hospital. She has been soldiering on helping our Benefice during the vacancy with the help of her clergy colleagues, and that has been something we all have been so grateful for. Please keep Susan and all our recovering friends in your prayers, and remember if there is anyone you would wish us to pray for, for whatever reason, please contact me, or anyone you know who is a regular worshipper. David Mulrenan

Would you like to have someone visit you in your home, now and again, or on a regular basis? If so, and you would like to discuss your requirements in confidence, then likewise, please contact a Churchwarden or Lay Elder as above.

Would you like the church to pray for anyone you know who is sick, unhappy or depressed? If so, please call me on 01728 628063 or leave a note in the church by the visitors book. I promise you this will be done at the next service. BRUNDISH PARISH COUNCIL Brundish Parish Council Meeting

Lay Elders Sandra Apps and David Mulrenan will be conducting the service when there will be a “surprise” for all mothers attending. When we say special service, we do mean this. It is devised to be gentle and informal, particularly for those who are not that familiar with regular worship. With that in mind, please consider coming along, even if you have never been before. Our welcomers will guide you through the service, if you feel awkward; it will be our pleasure as we will be so pleased to see you. Think about it.

Services for Easter .

St. Lawrence’s will be extra busy this year with three services over Holy Weekend:

Good Friday 12 noon. The Liturgy. The Passion will be sung by The Chantry Singers.

Holy Saturday. 7 p.m. Easter Vigil for the Benefice. A devotional service of mediaeval roots which will include the lighting of the Paschal Bonfire. Con- ducted by Reverend Ron Orams.

Easter Day. 9.30 a.m. Family Communion Service. Our beautiful church will be full of Spring flowers for this, the most glorious celebration in the Christian cal- endar. We are delighted that we will have our friend, Reverend Andrew Vessey with us, along with The Chantry Singers. Simnel cake, coffee, tea and juice will be served after the service, whilst the children (plenty of them, we hope!) will be invited to search the church and (if dry) the churchyard to see if they can find anything rather tasty left behind! We had a record attendance at Christmas. It would be lovely to see you all back.

Please note that your church is always open during the day for private prayer. If at any time you would wish us to pray for anyone you know, please inform one of our Lay Elders.

Lent Lunches A Lent Lunch will take place between 12.30 and 2pm on Saturday, 15 th March at Treehouse, Stradbroke Road, Brundish by the kind invitation of Elizabeth and Colin Hamilton. If you wish to come along, and you will be very welcome, please call Liz on 01379 388437.
