HARRIS The Founder of Rotary (1868-1947) Paul P. Harris, a lawyer, was the founder of Rotary, the world’s first and most international service club. Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united world- wide to provide humanitarian service, promote high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Born in Racine, Wisconsin on 19 April 1868, Paul was the second of six children born to George N. Harris and Cornelia Brian Harris. At age 3 he moved to Wallingford, Vermont where he grew up in the care of his paternal grandparents. Married to Jean Thomas Harris (1881-1963), they had no children. He received an LL.B. from the University of Iowa and received an honorary LL.D. from the University of Ver- mont. In 1896, he went to Chicago to practice law. One evening Paul went with a professional friend to his suburban home. After dinner, as they strolled through the neighborhood, Paul’s friend introduced him to various tradesmen in their stores. This reminded Paul of his New England village and it occurred to him, “Why not have a fellowship composed of businessmen from different occupations, without restrictions of politics or religion?” On 23 February 1905, Paul Harris formed the first Rotary Club with three other businessmen: Silvester Schiele, a coal merchant, Gustavus Loehr, a mining engineer, and Hiram Shorey, a merchant tailor. Paul Harris named the new club “Rotary” because members met in rotation at their various places of business. When Paul Harris became president of the club in its third year, he was convinced that the Rotary club could be developed into an important service movement and strove to extend Rotary to other cities. When President emeritus Paul Harris passed away on 27 January 1947, his dream had grown from an informal meet- ing of four men to some 6,000 Rotary clubs developed for the purpose of service and fellowship. 4 Gary C. • Havana High School Athletic Policies
HAVANA HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC POLICIES Havana Community Unit School District Extra Curricular Compliance Policy (This policy will be administered by the Athletic Director and the Principal) Havana School District is concerned about student health, safety, behavior and attitude. It is essential that all students participating in athletics, cheerleading or school activities be in good physical condition, free from the devastating effects of drugs, alcohol, tobacco and any other illegal substances. Participation in interscholastic athletics, cheerleading or school activities in Havana Community Unit School District 126 is a privilege extended to the student body by the Board of Education. Students are encouraged to participate enthusiastically as team members and as fans. For many people in our community and most people in surrounding communities, the only contact they have with our school is through our athletic participants, cheerleaders, fans, coaches and sponsors. Thus, the image of Havana Schools and community is largely formed by the actions and attitudes displayed by our students, coaches and sponsors at athletic contests and school activities. This applies not only on the playing field or court, but also in the locker rooms, hallways, and concession areas before, during and after the games and school activities. You need to be aware that you (students, players, cheerleaders, and fans) are ambassadors of the Havana Schools and community. You radiate the spirit and build the image and reputation of the school and community by your actions and attitudes. Let's help each other to build a very positive image and enthusiastic spirit, one which we can all be proud! All students who participate in extracurricular activities will have their parent or legal guardian sign and have on file at the school the extracurricular code of conduct, which states: 1.

  • Brought to You by the Fulton County Farm Bureau
Faces of AGRICULTURE BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE FULTON COUNTY FARM BUREAU 2018 May 2018 The Fulton County Farm Bureau Young Leader Committee sponsored the “Faces of Ag” promotion on the Fulton County Farm Bureau Facebook page during March of 2018. The intent of the Committee was to spotlight a farmer, farm family, or individual involved in the agriculture industry each day during March, expanding the promotion and celebration of “Ag Day” each day of March! We thought the entire set of stories was too good to “let go”; so we had a book published for each of the 31 “faces” to keep. These profiles spotlight the diversity, dedication, and passion local individuals have for our agricultural industry. Importantly, some of the stories also discuss changes, and sometimes the difficulties, that have been made to farm operations over the course of their farming careers. “Thank You” to all of the individuals and families that we featured during the campaign. It was an honor (and it was fun) to interview these folks, and to hear and share their stories. We met some new people and learned some things about old friends! What became evident over the course of the month, was the true passion that all of these people we profiled feel for their chosen profession. They love what they do. They feel a duty to do the best job possible for others (their family members, their customers, and even society). Not a single one of them said they wished they were doing something else with their lives. Most of them mentioned the importance of their Faith and their families; their desire to improve and advance, their determination to make their enterprise successful (and the wisdom to make a change when it wasn’t working), their encouragement of young people to enter their field, and the high value they place on the work ethic they learned growing up on and/or working on a farm.
