A Message from Our Dinner Co-Chairs

Murray Koppelman '57 Muriel Siebert Dinner Co-chairperson Dinner Co-chairperson President President and Chairwoman Eastlake Securities Muriel Siebert & Co.

On behalf of everyone associated with The Best of Brooklyn Dinner and Awards Gala, we thank you for joining us here tonight. Your support will go a long way in funding the Presidential Scholarship program, a four-year full-tuition scholarship awarded to the best students at Brooklyn College. This program is especially crucial as Brooklyn College continues its academic renaissance, attracting smart and ambitious students with high aspirations.

We are also delighted to pay tribute to alumnus Myron Kandel, Class of 1952. His is a truly inspirational story. Beginning as a copy boy for the New York Times, he has gone on to earn the respect and admiration of his peers as CNN Financial Editor and a well-known business journalist. In 2000, he was named one of the ten most influential business journalists of the twentieth century. Through his endeavors, Myron proudly represents Brooklyn College and sets a standard of excellence for current and future students to follow.

The enthusiasm of the Foundation’s dedicated Board of Trustees and Dinner Committee has helped make The Best of Brooklyn a reality, and they should be commended for their efforts. This is certainly a team effort and we would not be here without their tremendous hard work.

And of course, special thanks go out to all of you for being on hand for this unique evening. We hope you enjoy the festivities and making a difference for Brooklyn College.

A Message from Christoph M. Kimmich, President, Brooklyn College

It is my great pleasure to welcome you tonight to honor the man whom the world knows as Myron Kandel and whom we know affectionately as “Mike,” for he is truly the Best of Brooklyn. The qualities that have made him one of the most trusted journalists in America—his intelligence, drive, and unpretentious competence and integrity— have marked the best of Brooklyn’s students since the establishment of the College. Mike’s journalistic skills were honed while he was sports editor of that famous student newspaper, the Vanguard. During the paper’s turbulent final months, he and his classmates showed a tenacity and concern for truth that have distinguished this old Vanguard staff ever since. Before he graduated in 1952, Mike was already working for the New York Times, and in the ensuing decades he built a career in some of the world’s most prestigious newsrooms. A glance around the room tonight tells what success Mike has enjoyed in private life as well— which he built with his wife Thelma, our distinguished alumna, class of ’54, an editor, author, and artist; his son Andrew and daughter Bethany; and which extends to the community of friends and colleagues who have gathered this evening in his honor.

For Mike, Brooklyn College was a stepping-stone into a world of accomplishment, and so it remains for our students today. Invigorated by an air of renewal and change, and blessed with a world-class faculty and the rigorous course of study they have created, Brooklyn College continues to attract ambitious students eager to build not only a productive career, but also a richer life.

By coming here this evening, you help these students reach their goals. For the proceeds of this evening’s gala benefit the Presidential Scholarship Fund, which gives our best students full four-year tuition scholarships. These, our largest and most sought-after scholarships, enable the College to recruit and retain another Best of Brooklyn, its top high school graduates.

I am grateful to all who have made this a brilliant evening: those who planned and put it on and those who honor us with their company, as we honor our own Mike Kandel.
