Constituency Report (June 2019) European Parliament Elections The European Election was a single-issue election. There is no shying away from the fact that Labour was punished for not having a clear enough message on the issue, but I want to thank the activists who went out to campaign and worked so hard. We did everything we could to try to get a sensible deal on leaving the European Union, but things have now moved on. We are now heading for an impasse. Whoever the next leader of the Tory Party is, they are not going to give us the option of a General Election, where the public could decide who the next prime minister is. It is looking like we are going to find ourselves in a position with a Tory leader who will insist on a bad deal or no deal at all. I fear that it will be no deal. In those circumstances, we must be clear. It would be a disaster for our country to have no deal. We simply cannot have no deal without there being a confirmatory referendum and, in my EU Election campaigning in Brent, 20 May opinion, Labour should campaign for Remain.

Foreign Office Questions

At Foreign Office Questions in May I raised the issue of the Israeli government’s increasing slide towards authoritarianism and away from the rule of law. Israel’s far right President Netanyahu has proposed to give the Israeli government and Parliament the legal authority to ignore rulings from the Israeli Supreme Court. Unable to form a government and refusing to compromise with parties to the left and centre, Netanyahu has called another election in a craven attempt to hold power. This action is another step away from the rule of law. He aims to give himself immunity against prosecution, and complete immunity when it comes to attacking the freedoms of Israeli Arabs, ignoring the rights of Gazans and annexing the West Bank. The government’s weak commitment to recognising a Palestinian state when sufficient institutions are in place is simply not good enough, we must recognise the state of Palestine while there is still a state to recognise. Meeting Husam Zomlot, Palestinian Ambassador, 18 June Urgent Question Iran Nuclear Deal

In May I responded to an urgent question in light of the news that Iran planned to stop complying with parts of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (Iran nuclear deal). The Iran nuclear deal is rightly regarded by many as one of the crowning diplomatic achievements of this century. It is up to the UK to work with the EU and other signatories of the agreement to keep Iran engaged with the global community. I was interviewed on the Today programme in light of the tanker attacks in the Gulf of Oman which have been blamed on Iran, and stressed that we must urgently investigate the events independently. The escalating rhetoric between the Trump administration and Iran in recent weeks shows us just how delicate peace with Iran is, and we must work with Europe to Visit to Heywood, Middleton & Rochdale Women’s side-line the theocratic wing of the Iranian government and the Forum, 15 June neo-conservative hawks who advise President Trump.

Standing upDonald for my Trump constituent State Visit Shao Jiang On the 4th June I joined thousands of protesters in Parliament Square to rally against President Trump’s state visit. I have long said that this president who has bragged about sexually assaulting women, has banned millions of Muslims from entering the United States, and has conducted a crusade against women’s rights across the world, does not deserve the honour of a state visit.

Theresa May holding hands with Donald Trump is now an iconic image, serving as a metaphor for this government’s craven attitude towards the United States, willing to put up with anything for a favourable trade deal. Thousands of people would have watched the Prime Minister in the news sitting meekly while Donald Trump proclaimed that everything, including the NHS, will be on the table during Climate Protest outside Islington Town Hall, 24 May trade negotiations.

Statement on Hong Kong

On 13 June, I responded to the Government’s statement on the proposed changes to Hong Kong’s extradition laws, which would allow extraditions to mainland China. The proposal prompted large scale protests and many fear that the changes would expose people in Hong Kong to China’s deeply flawed justice system and would lead to further loss of judicial independence. I asked the Government if they have sought or received any safeguards from the Hong Kong authorities that the powers will not be extended to the extradition of political activists and about protections for British citizens living in Hong Kong and British national (overseas) passport holders. Whilst the suspension of the extradition Bill is a step in the

D-Day Commemorations in Normandy, 6 June right direction, it is not enough. The people of Hong Kong need to be listened to and the Bill needs to be scrapped. By-Election

I was delighted by the results of the Peterborough By-Election and welcome the new Labour MP, Lisa Forbes, to Parliament. I visited Peterborough twice, once in January and again in May, and went out on the campaign trail with Lisa. It was a tough campaign in Peterborough but the people of Peterborough have voted against Tory Party austerity and rejected a no deal Brexit represented by the Brexit Party. Only the Labour Party can combat the politics of division and bring together our fractured society. The results show that, when we talk to people about bread and butter issues, we can win. Campaigning with new Peterborough MP Lisa When we are united, we are unstoppable. Forbes, 29 May In the constituency and out campaigning
