Debussy Perspectives, 1918-2018 RNCM, Manchester Monday, 19 March Paper session A: Debussy’s Style in History, Conference Room, 2.00-5.00 Chair: Marianne Wheeldon 2.00-2.30 – Mark DeVoto (Tufts University), ‘Debussy’s Evolving Style and Technique in Rodrigue et Chimène’ Claude Debussy’s Rodrigue et Chimène, on which he worked for two years in 1891-92 before abandoning it, is the most extensive of more than a dozen unfinished operatic projects that occupied him during his lifetime. It can also be regarded as a Franco-Wagnerian opera in the same tradition as Lalo’s Le Roi d’Ys (1888), Chabrier’s Gwendoline (1886), d’Indy’s Fervaal (1895), and Chausson’s Le Roi Arthus (1895), representing part of the absorption of the younger generation of French composers in Wagner’s operatic ideals, harmonic idiom, and quasi-medieval myth; yet this kinship, more than the weaknesses of Catulle Mendès’s libretto, may be the real reason that Debussy cast Rodrigue aside, recognising it as a necessary exercise to be discarded before he could find his own operatic voice (as he soon did in Pelléas et Mélisande, beginning in 1893). The sketches for Rodrigue et Chimène shed considerable light on the evolution of Debussy’s technique in dramatic construction as well as his idiosyncratic approach to tonal form. Even in its unfinished state — comprising three out of a projected four acts — the opera represents an impressive transitional stage between the Fantaisie for piano and orchestra (1890) and the full emergence of his genius, beginning with the String Quartet (1893) and the Prélude à l’Après-midi d’un faune (1894).

CLAUDE DEBUSSY | SEGMENT LIST © HNH International “I could not do without his music. It is my oxygen.” (Francis Poulenc on Debussy) A unique voice in classical music, Claude Debussy exercised widespread influence over later generations of composers, both in his native France and elsewhere, including Messiaen, Cage and Bartók. His music combines late nineteenth- century Romanticism with a soundscape that exudes evocative imagery. This catalogue contains an impressive collection of works by this master composer: piano music, ranging from his ever-popular Clair de lune to the light-hearted Children’s Corner Suite; examples of his influential orchestral music, including Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and La Mer; the exquisite opera Pelléas et Mélisande, and much more. © 2018 Naxos Rights US, Inc. 1 of 2 LABEL CATALOGUE # COMPOSER TITLE FEATURED ARTISTS UPC A Musical Journey DEBUSSY, Claude Naxos 2.110544 FRANCE: A Musical Tour of Provence Various Artists 747313554454 (1862–1918) Music by Debussy and Ravel [DVD] DEBUSSY, Claude Naxos 8.556663 BEST OF DEBUSSY Various Artists 0730099666329 (1862–1918) DEBUSSY, Claude Cello Recital – Cello Sonata Tatjana Vassiljeva, Cello / Naxos 8.555762 0747313576227 (1862–1918) (+STRAVINSKY / BRITTEN / DUTILLEUX) Yumiko Arabe, Piano DEBUSSY, Claude Naxos 8.556788 Chill With Debussy Various Artists 0730099678827 (1862–1918) DEBUSSY, Claude Clair de lune and Other Piano Favorites • Naxos 8.555800 Francois-Joël Thiollier, Piano 0747313580026 (1862–1918) Arabesques • Reflets dans l'eau DEBUSSY, Claude Naxos 8.509002 Complete Orchestral Works [9CDs Boxed Set] Various Artists 747313900237 (1862–1918) DEBUSSY, Claude Early Works for Piano Duet – Naxos 8.572385 Ivo Haah, Adrienne Soos, Piano 747313238576 (1862–1918) Printemps • Le triomphe de Bacchus • Symphony in B Minor DEBUSSY, Claude Naxos 8.578077-78 Easy-Listening Piano Classics (+RAVEL) [2CDs] Various Artists 747313807772 (1862–1918) DEBUSSY, Claude Naxos 8.572472 En blanc et noir (+MESSIAEN) Håkon Austbø, Ralph van Raat, Piano 747313247271 (1862–1918) Four-Hand Piano Music, Vol.

PROGRAM NOTES BY DR. RICHARD E. RODDA CLAUDE DEBUSSY Born 22 August 1862 in Saint-Germaine-en Laye, near Paris; died 26 March 1918 in Paris. Petite Suite (composed for piano four-hands in 1889; orchestrated in 1907) Orchestrated by Henri-Paul Büsser Born 16 January 1872 in Toulouse, France. Died 30 December 1973 in Paris. PREMIERE OF PIANO FOUR-HANDS VERSION: Paris, 1 March 1889; private salon; Claude Debussy and Jacques Durand PREMIERE OF ORCHESTRAL VERSION: Paris, 4 November 1907; Orchestre Lamoureux; Camille Chevillard, conductor PSO PREMIERE: 16 October 1980; Heinz Hall; Kiril Kondrashin, conductor APPROXIMATE DURATION: 14 minutes INSTRUMENTATION: piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, English horn, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, timpani, percussion, harp and strings. During the early years of his life, before he fell under the influence of Eric Satie and the Symbolist poets, Debussy turned to the refined style of Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) for inspiration in his instrumental music. Several works of that time are modeled on the Baroque dance suite, including the well-known Clair de Lune, originally conceived as a simple slow movement for the Suite Bergamasque of 1889, the year from which the Petite Suite also dates. Like the Suite Bergamasque, the Petite Suite comprises brief dance movements that reflect the concise form and clear melody of their models. Though written for piano-four hands, the work’s greatest success has been in the sensitive orchestral setting by Henri-Paul Büsser. Büsser, like Debussy a graduate of the Paris Conservatoire and a recipient of the Prix de Rome, was a composer, conductor and organist who died as recently as 1973 at the imposing age of 101.

Program Notes by Leonard Garrison 7:30 p.m., Saturday, June 6, 2015 Sonata for Horn and Piano, Op. 347 Fritz Spindler [Note by Chris Dickey] Fritz Spindler (1817-1905) was a German composer and pianist. He originally studied to become a minister but later realized his passion was for music. After years of studying piano privately, Spindler dedicated his life to composition and teaching. During his lifetime, he was productive and wrote in various genres, including trios, sonatas, opera transcriptions, two symphonies, a piano concerto, orchestral works, and numerous teaching pieces for the piano. His compositions are noted for their tuneful melodies and artful construction. This Sonata for Horn and Piano, Op. 347 is no exception. The first movement expresses a traditional sonata-allegro form, but the music travels to unexpected tonal centers in all three formal areas of the movement. An aria-like middle movement follows and features long, fluid melodic lines for the soloist and pianist. The lively finale is a spirited rondo that brings the sonata to a conclusion. In general, the piano part is especially virtuosic as Spindler himself was a gifted pianist. Sonata for Cello Solo in C Minor, Op. 28 Eugène Ysaÿe Belgian violinist, composer, and conductor Eugène Ysaÿe (1858-1931) studied with his father and Henri Vieuxtemps. He taught a generation of famous violinists at the Brussels Conservatory, including Joseph Gingold, Nathan Milstein, and violist Willian Primrose. Many of the leading composers of the time dedicated works to him, most notably César Franck’s Violin Sonata. Ysaÿe’s best-known compositions are his six solo sonatas for violin, and the Cello Sonata makes equal demands of virtuosity.

  • A Pedogogical Discussion of Five French Twentieth
A PEDOGOGICAL DISCUSSION OF FIVE FRENCH TWENTIETH-CENTURY PIANO PIECES FOR PROGRESSIVE STUDY by SHARLA ANN BENDER AMANDA W. PENICK, COMMITTEE CHAIR KEVIN T. CHANCE, CO-CHAIR THOMAS ROBINSON KENNETH B. OZZELLO LINDA PAGE CUMMINS MARGOT O. LAMME A DOCUMENT Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in the School of Music in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, AL 2014 Copyright Sharla Ann Bender 2014 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This document provides a pedagogical study of five works for younger pianists by twentieth- century French composers. The works are Jeu by Darius Milhaud, Petite suite serieuse pour concert de famille by Besty Jolas, Les fleurs endormies by Marcel Landowski, A la maniere…d’un violon by Raymond Loucher, and L’histoire de Babar by Francis Poulenc. Each work is published individually by the French editor Gerard Billaudot and is a part of a collection of twenty-seven teaching pieces specifically designated pour les jeunes (“for young people”). These works can be used as an introduction to modern French piano music for elementary through early-advanced students. This subject is of great importance as such works are rarely found in student-level repertoire and method books. The selections are presented in the order of progressive study, each accompanied with a detailed discussion, so that the teacher may decide on how best to integrate the compositions into their students’ training. It is possible to use all five pieces with one student in a graduated progression; but the discussions are presented with one composition per chapter so that an instructor may go immediately to the piece that most closely reflects their student’s current level.

  • Debussy, (Achille)Claude
8/8/2014 Debussy, (Achille-)Claude Debussy, (Achille)Claude (b St GermainenLaye, 22 Aug 1862; d Paris, 25 March 1918). French composer. One of the most important musicians of his time, his harmonic innovations had a profound influence on generations of composers. He made a decisive move away from Wagnerism in his only complete opera Pelléas et Mélisande, and in his works for piano and for orchestra he created new genres and revealed a range of timbre and colour which indicated a highly original musical aesthetic. 1. Debussy's family was originally of modest peasant stock, settled in the Auxois district of Burgundy from at least the 17th century, and moving to the Paris region around 1800. The composer's grandfather was a wine seller and later a joiner. His father, ManuelAchille, served in the marine infantry for seven years, then settled with his wife in St GermainenLaye to run a china shop. Their first son, AchilleClaude, was born there, although it was two years before he was baptized. His father dreamt of making a sailor of him. In 1870, during the FrancoPrussian War, the family took refuge in Cannes with Manuel's sister, Clementine, who arranged for Debussy to have his first piano lessons with an Italian musician, Jean Cerutti.
