But when the workers’ union asks for a 7 1/2¢ raise, problems arise. Enter Sid Sorokin, the dashing new supervisor, who has all the women in the factory distracted from their machines. He has his eyes set on Babe Williams, the leader of the grievance committee. Sid wants efficiency while Babe is ready to fight for that raise. Meanwhile Hines, the executive time keeper is in love with his boss’s secretary Gladys. Prez, the head of the union is flirting with Mae. SOB SISTERS: THE IMAGE OF THE FEMALE JOURNALIST IN POPULAR CULTURE By Joe Saltzman Director, Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture (IJPC) Joe Saltzman 2003 The Image of the Female Journalist in Popular Culture revolves around a dichotomy never quite resolved. The female journalist faces an ongoing dilemma: How to incorporate the masculine traits of journalism essential for success – being aggressive, self-reliant, curious, tough, ambitious, cynical, cocky, unsympathetic – while still being the woman society would like her to be – compassionate, caring, loving, maternal, sympathetic. Female reporters and editors in fiction have fought to overcome this central contradiction throughout the 20th century and are still fighting the battle today. Not much early fiction featured newswomen. Before 1880, there were few newspaperwomen and only about five novels written about them.1 Some real-life newswomen were well known – Margaret Fuller, Nelly Bly (Elizabeth Cochrane), Annie Laurie (Winifred Sweet or Winifred Black), Jennie June (Jane Cunningham Croly) – but most female journalists were not permitted to write on important topics. Front-page assignments, politics, finance and sports were not usually given to women. Top newsroom positions were for men only. Novels and short stories of Victorian America offered the prejudices of the day: Newspaper work, like most work outside the home, was for men only. Women were supposed to marry, have children and stay home. To become a journalist, women had to have a good excuse – perhaps a dead husband and starving children. Those who did write articles from home kept it to themselves. Few admitted they wrote for a living. Women who tried to have both marriage and a career flirted with disaster.2 The professional woman of the period was usually educated, single, and middle or upper class. -

PROGRAM NOTES By Joshua S. Ritter Goodspeed Education & Library Director You don’t have to be a baseball fan to know that the New York Yankees‐Boston Red Sox rivalry bitterly divides colleagues, neighbors, families, and Goodspeed patrons. In fact, according to The Harvard Sports Analysis Collective, East Haddam is located on the frontlines of this legendary baseball feud with slightly more than half the population favoring the Red Sox. What better way for Goodspeed to bring some levity to this divisive situation than with a hilarious musical comedy? Fortunately, Joe DiPietro’s side‐splitting adaptation of Damn Yankees contemporizes the book by replacing the defunct Washington Senators with the Boston Red Sox. We are pleased to have the opportunity to provide a neutral zone where members of the Yankees Universe and Red Sox Nation can forget their bitter differences for a few hours and share some laughs when the curtain goes up. Flashing back to the middle of the 20th century, Douglass Wallop’s 1954 novel The Year The Yankees Lost the Pennant was a best‐selling major league baseball twist on the Faust fable. Damn Yankees’ genesis was set in motion when William Morris agent Albert B. Taylor brought this property to the attention of legendary producer, director, writer, and actor George Abbott. Abbott and his team had just struck gold with the smash hit musical The Pajama Game, a show based on Richard Bissel’s novel 7½ Cents. Perhaps this monumental success gave Abbott the chutzpah to take the idea of a baseball musical seriously, despite the fact that all previous attempts at creating one were unsuccessful. -

PENUMBRA THEATRE COMPANY PRODUCTION Est. 1976 February 12 to March 10 Price 15¢ THE BENEVOLENCE POST Skeptics By IFA BEYZA I was a child of the civil rights movement…integrated when I was nine years old, but I didn't encounter Emmett Till's story until I was a teenager. The Till Trilogy [The Ballad of Emmett Till, benevolence, That Summer in Sumner] is inspired by the story of a 14-year-old youth from Chicago who journeys to Mississippi in August of 1955. This trip to visit family in Mississippi certainly changes his fate. He's murdered in that week, and his life-death-journey changes the course of the nation ... I wanted to look at this story from an advantage point of view. The Till saga was a highly documented case. It was like a national soap opera on race. It was played out in the newspapers in the North, in the South, the black press and the white press. There was a tremendous amount of information available to the public. You would think that, because there was so much information, the truth or facts of the actual story would be readily available. What I found was, even as I researched the archive of primary documentation, was a host of confusing and inaccurate information. There were a lot of holes in the accounting of details, that didn't quite seem to make sense to me. So, that was the first lesson which I will share with you: “even if it's in print, even if it's documented, even if it's supposed to be from an expert, you must approach that information with skepticism.” Because the only truth that you have is that it's printed and that it's representing the tone as truth, but that's not necessarily the case. -
