Every city has it’s institutions. The places where people gather almost by instinct. The path to their door is well worn and the magic that made them happen is elusive to the rest of us mere mortals. Lucio’s is one of those institutions. With its sunflower-yellow walls, wheels of parmesan and terracotta tiled floors, it has drawn the good and the great for four decades. At its heart is Lucio, behind its books is Sally and in recent years their children Michela and Matteo have ably spun the gentle gold that has made dining at Lucio’s such a pleasure. It is a place where you are not a diner, you are a guest. You have the privilege of being welcomed as an old friend returning, safe in the knowledge that you are about to have a rather lovely experience.

The dining room has long been a place for the senses to feast. A little prosecco, maybe some oysters, the Charles Blackman drawn on a tablecloth catches your eye as does the John Olsen that decorates the menu (as they have done for decades, changing with the seasons). There are small works and sculptures on ledges and balanced in niches. Many are about the special conviviality of Lucio’s. The pleasures of the table or what Edmund Capon would have called ‘a proper knees up’. The magic of Lucio’s has drawn to it a generation of artists who have claimed it as their own. For the rest of us, it is like gaining entry to a rather special clubhouse. Lining the walls are decades of works. Delicate inky squids by Luke Sciberras, dancing couples in chalk on the walls by Garry Shead, earthy landscapes by Elisabeth Cummings and an empty Nebuchadnezzar, decorated by John Olsen. Everywhere the eye goes, it finds delight. There is wit and warmth. There is pleasure. It is the embodiment of food, art and friendship.

Literature Deborah Edwards, Robert Klippel, Art Gallery of , Sydney, 2002, CD-ROM

In 1964 fellow artist and friend Colin Lanceley discovered a huge trove of wooden machine pattern-parts in a Balmain store once occupied by the Morts Ship Building firm. Lanceley and Klippel's excitement was palpable. Superbly crafted, 'the wooden patterns (were) once made for sandcasting maritime machinery parts, some of them dating to the beginning of the century when virtually all machinery was cast.' 1 With forms for the production of sprockets and rotors, flywheels and cogs, the patterns were to be a wellspring of inspiration for both artists. After transferring the thousands of pieces to their studios, Lanceley commenced work immediately, though it would be 20 years before Klippel engaged with the material. It wasn't until 1980 when the National Gallery of Australia commissioned a series of outdoor sculptures, the resulting works now installed in the Sculpture Garden, that Klippel fully engaged with the pattern-parts in his Birchgrove store.

As noted by Deborah Edwards, 'Klippel's beginning was his end. His large series of wooden pattern-part sculptures reiterates processes and principles that were in place in 1948. The last 15 years of his life saw a return to wood – a material he had now used since the 1940s – in yet another extraordinary outpouring of activity which resulted in a series of over 150 assemblages.' 2

Working by hand, Klippel started by filling imperfections in the parts, then sanding the painted surfaces back, reducing the yellow, red and black sections into softer, cloudy hues and raw wood. 'The process of 'chance' operating in the assemblage of these works appears to have been mediated by Klippel's culling of his 'field' of parts. The wooden sculptures seem constituted of largely geometric solids, yet the captured pattern pieces also incorporated many of the 'organic' forms (curved, bulging, circular, tubular and serpentine sections) which Colin Lanceley used to create his own assemblages in 1964-65, with a sinewy organicism that can be related to the fluid arabesques of painterly form. It is significant that Klippel subverted such parts and sections in his assemblages for the creation of sculptural rhythms that are muscular, formidable, ponderous and geometricist in their foundation.' 3

From 1981, Imants Tillers has appropriated Italian artist Giorgio An enduring symbol whose roots stretch back to Greco-Roman de Chirico's paintings, resulting in some of his most striking and civilisations, here we are presented with a pair of smoked herrings, enduring works. Overlaid is the text 'A throw of the dice will never abolish chance' which is drawn from a poem by French Symbolist poet Stephane Mallarme, who was active at the same time as de Chirico. This seems appropriate to the working sensibilities that emanate from Lucio's kitchen, where what is created and prepared serves to educate as well as to delight us. The experience cultivates a greater awareness of sensory wonder and stimulates our receptivity towards aesthetic well-being. We leave the restaurant fulfilled in a complete sense rather than full in a sense that is basic.

Lucio's restaurant was formerly The Hungry Horse, and in 1962 Betty O'Neill asked me to lunch there. She told me she was opening an art gallery above the restaurant to be called The Hungry Horse Gallery. I agreed to show with her, and her opening exhibition included works by John Olsen, Colin Lanceley, Robert Hughes, Charles Reddington, Frank Hodgkinson, Carl Plate, Robert Klippel, Emanuel Raft and myself. We were photographed together standing on the front balcony of the gallery and the photograph became an icon of Sydney art of the 1960s. A copy of it hangs in Lucio's restaurant along with works by many of the original Hungry Horse group, plus many by younger artists of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Lucio's has become, since Lucio took over fifteen years ago, the artists' restaurant of Sydney.
