About the artists

Fri, Jan 8 at 9pm ‘Nuf Said funk septet ‘Nuf Said balances ultra-tight musicianship with off-the-cuff improvisation, bringing together deep bass grooves, blurry jazz chords, and the bluesy wail of Romanian-born frontwoman Ioana Vintu. Their lineup also includes alto saxophonist extraordinaire Andrew Gould, semifinalist at the 2013 International Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition. The outfit takes the stage at the BAMcafé in advance of the release of its upcoming sophomore album.

Sat, Jan 9 at 9pm Clifton Anderson Trombone virtuoso Clifton Anderson plays with a swinging hard-bop style that he pushes to thrilling extremes for maximum expressive power. Since receiving his first trombone from his uncle Sonny Rollins (whom he has performed with for decades), Anderson has been a member of the legendary Slide Hampton’s World of Trombones ensemble, released several acclaimed recordings, and has worked with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie to Stevie Wonder to Paul Simon.

A veteran sideman known as a member of the legendary trumpeter ’s band and for playing alongside greats like , , and Cassandra Wilson, Gumbs is renowned for the beautifully reflective, lyrical touch he brings to the piano. Other collaborators include the poet Asoul Born, on Sat, Jan 16 only.

Fri, Jan 22 at 10pm Mariami Bridging the gap between the Eastern European liturgical music of her native country of Georgia and American R&B, soul chanteuse Mariami makes lush, sexy slow jams that set her rich, soaring vocals against a day-glo-colored sonic palette. The result is hook-laden, adventurous pop that’s set apart by the unique folk flavor of her homeland.

Sat, Jan 23 at 9pm Dina Regine Channeling the rootsy, vintage sounds of 70s rock and soul, Dina Regine offers a fresh take on old school blues jams. An in-demand DJ who has performed and recorded alongside legends like Mike Bloomfield and Jimmy Cliff, Regine is a formidable front woman in her own right. Her powerhouse voice and retro cool arrangements evoke the golden age of Stax-era R&B.

Fri, Jan 29 at 9:30pm As Lolas As Lolas is an all female NYC Band which revives Brazilian psychedelic 70s rock à la Os Mutantes. Featuring Fabiana Masili (vocals, percussion), Eliane Amherd (guitar, vocals ), Viva DeConcini (guitar, vocals), Dawn Drake ( bass, vocals), and Rosa Avila (drums), this group brings thundering drum rolls, funkafied bass lines, and four- voice heavy harmonies. Ever since its first concert in Harlem’s “Shrine” in February 2014, the band has appeared in NY clubs such as SOB’s, Nublu, Brooklyn Bowl, with recent touring in Europe.
