To start the discussion, show Slide 1 of 06 LCD Slides 1, then tell the students the following statements and present the topic coverage: Communication and Networks Communication The Internet has become one (1) of the most important Connection Devices Data Transmission components of our life. We browse the Web, check emails, make Networks VoIP phone calls, and have video conferences via computers. All Network Types Network Architecture of these applications are made possible by networking Organizational Networks computers together, and this complex network of computers is *Property4/16/2018 of STI IT1707 1 usually referred to as the Internet. To efficiently and effectively user computers, you need to understand the concept of connectivity, wireless networking, and the elements that make up network and communications systems. Additionally, you need to understand the basics of connection devices, data transmission, network types, network architectures, and organizational networks. 2. Use 06 Activity 1 to assess’ the students understanding of basic networking. Select ten (10) students and divide them into two (2) groups. Select a group who will first to perform the activity. The two Communication and Networks *Property of STI [email protected] Page 2 of 10 IT1707 (2) groups will select and answer a question in the activity alternately. The first group to get three (3) in a row is the winner. The following are the answers in no particular order: Ethernet Internet Bluetooth IP address Firewall Computer network Wi-Fi Browser Satellite Note: Acknowledge and assess the answers coming from the class. Computer networks can be characterized by their size as well as their purpose. The size of a network can be expressed by the geographic area they occupy and the number of computers that are part of the network. Networks can cover anything from a handful of devices within a single room to millions of devices spread across the entire globe. For example, telephone lines may connect communications equipment within the same building or within a home. Networks also may citywide and even international, using both cable and wireless connections. In this topic, we will discuss the different types of computer networks. 2. Refer students to Page 1 of the handout and show Slides 6-12, discuss the different network types using the provided simple diagrams and explain each using the given diagrams. Prepare example scenarios when explaining each type.
