As they follow developments in rural mainland Tanzania, and in other countries, they develop notions of what “the ideal” life different from previous generations’. Youths tend to not consider farming and fishing as real jobs anymore, rather seeking jobs in offices and business. In Zanzibar, it is believed that supporters of the ruling party have greater economic opportunities. For decades, Pemba Island has been the stronghold of the political opposition. Young Pembans therefore find it hard to seek the privileges of ruling party supporters. As there is little room in their community for critique of the opposition party, they seek to become apolitical through political disengagement. This is a difficult project, since the opposition party over time has become a central part of the people’s shared identity. This master thesis discusses everyday forms of resistance in Wete town on Pemba Island, where politics are strongly polarized. -

PROJECT/PROGRAMME CONCEPT NOTE TO THE ADAPTATION FUND PART I: PROJECT/PROGRAMMEINFORMATION PART I: PROJECT/PROGRAMMEINFORMATION Project/Programme Category: Regular Project Title of Project/Programme: Climate Change Adaptation in Saltwater stressed and Freshwater Deficient Communities in Zanzibar Type of Implementing Entity: National Implementing Entity (NIE) Implementing Entity: National Environment Management Council (NEMC) Executing Entity/ies: Department of Environment, Second Vice President’s Office, Zanzibar Amount of Financing Requested: US$ 3,500,000 1.0 Project Background and Context Zanzibar forms part of the United Republic of Tanzania and comprises two major islands – Unguja and Pemba, plus a number of smaller islands with a total area of 1651 km2. Administratively, the two islands are subdivided into five regions, three in Unguja (North, Urban West and South) and two in Pemba (North and South), with an estimated population of 1.6 million (based on NBS growth rate)1. The increasing population on the same area of land (from around 400 persons/km2 in 2002 to around 530 persons/km2 in 2012) poses a lot of challenges in terms settlements, availability of freshwater and agricultural land and other livelihood implications. The population growth also increases the level of vulnerability to climate change, which is a pattern observed in other Small Island Development States (SIDS)2. The islands have a tropical warm and humid climate with small seasonal temperature variation of 3-40C, the lowest temperatures being observed in July and highest in February. The seasonality is associated with the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone which moves north and south, bringing about a bimodal pattern of rainfall, with long rains during March to May and short rains between October and December. -

Of particular mention is the support to the GCRMN from the US Department of State and the US National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. I wish to make a special dedication to Robert (Bob) E. Johannes (1936-2002) who has spent over 40 years working on coral reefs, especially linking the scientists who research and monitor reefs with the millions of people who live on and beside these resources and often depend for their lives from them. Bob had a rare gift of understanding both sides and advocated a partnership of traditional and modern management for reef conservation. We will miss you Bob! Menai Bay IMMA Description
Menai Bay IMMA Description The Menai Bay Conservation Area (MBCA) is located off the south-west coast of Unguja Island, Zanzibar, Tanzania, East Africa. The MBCA covers an area of 470km 2 of mostly shallow (<50 m) habitat, characterised by fringing inshore reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves, soft sediment, and several offshore reefs. The MBCA has been a designated conservation area since August 1997 (Berggren et al., Area Size 2007) and was originally established to protect the 648 km2 coral reef habitats and rich biodiversity from illegal and destructive fishing practices such as dynamite Qualifying Species and Criteria fishing. In order to protect the coral habitat, the use Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin of non-destructive gears was encouraged, and the Tursiops aduncus use of drift and bottom set gillnets was increased Criterion C2 through government subsidy. Email: [email protected] Abstract Bycatch is the most significant and immediate threat to cetacean populations at the global scale. Here we review available information on cetacean bycatch in industrial and small-scale (mostly artisanal) fisheries in the western Indian Ocean (WIO). In coastal waters of the WIO region, the impact of bycatch has not been quantified in small-scale fisheries, except in bottom-set gillnets and driftnets targeting large pelagic fish (including tuna) off Zanzibar. Based on bycatch data from observer programs and estimated abundance of coastal dolphins, the bycatch off the south coast of Zanzibar was found to be unsustainable. Elsewhere in the region, other species are also bycaught, including coastal, oceanic and migratory species such as humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), mostly in bottom-set and drift gillnets. In open-ocean fisheries, bycatch in pelagic longlines has been recorded but seems to be rare. Species affected are mostly medium-sized delphinids (Globicephala macrorhynchus, Grampus griseus, Pseudorca crassidens) involved in depredation (on either bait or catch). -

Subsequently the Kenya Marine & Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) and the Institute of Marine Sciences of the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania prepared a detailed proposal which was approved for funding by IOC within the framework of the IOC-Sida- Flanders Marine Science programme. The main objectives of the project are: . Preparation of a comprehensive report on the tide gauges which have operated in the _ region, the volumes, quality of data collected. Inventory of capacity available for installation, levelling and maintenance of gauges, as well as analysis of data. Identifying the requirements for completion of the National, Regional and GLOSS network components in each of the countries of the region. Collection and analysis of sea level data from the Region, with a view to identifying variability of sea level and long term trends at different places in the region.
