With their hearts in their throats, adrenaline pumping through their veins, the Flyboys then had to dead-reckon their way back to a tiny speck of landing deck or to a distant airfield their often-damaged planes never made it to. Flags of Our Fathers had been published recently. Stock photo. They were spirit warriors almost without a war, but in constant fear that they would be the next to see an invasion. Whereas Iwo had flat areas suitable for assault from the sea, Chichi had a hilly inland and a craggy coast. On the same day my father and his buddies raised that flag on Iwo Jima, Flyboys were held prisoner just miles away on Chichi Jima. I credit the author for finally telling their stories, but I found his agenda-driven account of history to be a distracting disservice to the men whose story he is telling. This required two layers of bombers in the sky — huge Bs lumbering high above with their cargo of napalm to burn cities, and smaller, lower-flying carrier-based planes to neutralize threats to the Bs. Bradley's quest for the truth took him from dusty attics in American small towns, to untapped government archives containing classified documents, to the heart of Japan, and finally to Chichi Jima itself. This is the background against which the tragedy of what happened to the U. Flyboys is a story of war and horror but also of friendship and honor. All I knew or thought I knew about Flyboys when I bought it last week off the bargain book shelf at Borders was that it was the story of downed US aviators and their horrific treatment at the hands of their Japanese captors I've been reading historical non-fiction for a LONG time, and it's rare to find a book about as threadbare a topic as World War 2 that is both informative and, at the same time, causes one to re-examine ones perspective of those events. I am so glad I read this amazing story. Oh, really? Using that incident as the unifying theme of his work, James Bradley has given us an absorbing book that reveals and explains the special savagery of the Pacific War. Bradley brings into vivid focus these brave young men who went to war for their country, and through their lives he also tells the larger story of two nations in a hellish war. It compares the atrocities Japanese troops committed on a large scale against Chinese civilians, with similar atrocities committed by American forces against Filipinos during and after the Spanish—American War , and earlier by American troops against native American Indians. New books! He does a wonderful job of describing the lives of the pilots prior to their enlistment in the Navy and, as a result, does a mighty fine job documenting the rise of naval aviation and the use of aircraft in war. Certainly the Americans set aside the nice scruples they had expressed before the war about the savagery of bombing civilian populations. They were dug in and resigned to death. Mori and Capt. Your comments about Flyboys were very well-said and I completely agree. Whether they are destroyed individually or in groups, and whether it is accomplished by means of mass bombing, poisonous smoke, poisons, drowning, or decapitation, dispose of them as the situation dictates. Whatever his motive, this book fails on how it was haphazardly structured and the unreliability of the author due to his overtly bias writing. Like Like. I think the author forgets that. Just a few surrendered. An overwhelming downpour of jellied gasoline. Accounts on Chichi Jima correlate with shocking and appalling records of torture inflicted on Americans held captive elsewhere by the Japanese, including live medical experiments without anesthesia. This is exactly what wars gives birth to, human monsters!!!! It is also worth noting that the bombing of Tokyo killed more people in a single-day than those killed by the atomic bomb at Nagasaki. • Flags of Our Fathers: a Novel by James Bradley with Ron Powers by Spencer Green, Staff Writer
~ ________ Issue ~ http://www.elsegundousd.com/eshs/bayeagle0607/NovembeP25FlagsO... Flags of our Fathers: A Novel by James Bradley with Ron Powers by Spencer Green, Staff Writer “There are no great men. Just great challenges which ordinary men, out of necessity, are forced by circumstances to meet.” Admiral William F. “Bull” Hawlsey's words are the theme of Flags Of Our Fathers. Flags Of Our Fathers is not a book about heroes; instead, it is an account of six ordinary men doing what they had to in order to help their brothers in arms. No doubt, you've seen the picture before: the picture of six men raising a flag over Iwo Jima during World War II. James Bradley and Ron Powers have finally told the story of the six men in this iconic image. Bradley's father, John, is one of these men, one of the flag raisers who became instant heroes once the picture got back to America. While the Marines and Navy personnel continued to fight on Iwo Jima, the image began hitting newsstands around the country. This picture instilled hope in Americans, inspiring a country that was tired of fighting. The figures in the picture became national heroes, despite the fact that half of them were killed in combat soon after the famous picture was taken. Bradley tells the reader of how his father, John "Doc" Bradley, and the two other survivors, Rene Gagnon and Ira Hayes, were forced to go around the country to raise money for the government. This was painful for the three men, as they had been forced to see many of their friends die horribly in battle, and they felt as if their dead and wounded comrades deserved the glory and fame more than them.

Teddy Roosevelt comes across as a bumbling politician with deep-rooted prejudices, apparently completely in vogue at the time as evidenced by popular press and academics who spoke authoritatively on things like the Teutonic Anglo-Saxon superior ability to govern themselves relative to "savages" which included Native Americans, Central America and all of Asia apparently. But reading this book helps in understanding the mindset of those leaders and opportunists who would drag us, through lies, misdirecton and propoganda into conflicts on the far side of the world. As soon as I finished this book, I bought copies for numerous people, and signed up to give a summary of it to a book group. While he does have some legitimate points to make, his completely arbitrary, almost-hysterical point of view renders them not only moot but invisible. What Secret? But I don't see any righteous indignation about any of the other beliefs of the time that turned out to be wrong, and there wer I liked James Bradley's earlier books, but this one's a dud. Examples, snide remarks, appalled declaiming, etc.. In its after effects a conquest may be fraught either with evil or with good for mankind, according to the comparative worth of the conquering and conquered peoples. There are certainly interesting parts of the book.

  • This Is a True Story
This is a true story..... Each year I am hired to go to Washington, DC, with the eighth grade class from Clinton, WI where I grew up, to videotape their trip. I greatly enjoy visiting our nation's capitol, and each year I take some special memories back with me. This fall's trip was especially memorable. On the last night of our trip, we stopped at the Iwo Jima memorial. This memorial is the largest bronze statue in the world and depicts one of the most famous photographs in history -- that of the six brave soldiers raising the American Flag at the top of a rocky hill on the island of Iwo Jima, Japan, during WW II Over one hundred students and chaperones piled off the buses and headed towards the memorial. I noticed a solitary figure at the base of the statue, and as I got closer he asked, 'Where are you guys from?' I told him that we were from Wisconsin . 'Hey, I'm a cheese head, too! Come gather around, Cheese heads, and I will tell you a story.' (It was James Bradley who just happened to be in Washington , DC , to speak at the memorial the following day. He was there that night to say good night to his dad, who had passed away. He was just about to leave when he saw the buses pull up. I videotaped him as he spoke to us, and received his permission to share what he said from my videotape. It is one thing to tour the incredible monuments filled with history in Washington, DC, but it is quite another to get the kind of insight we received that night.) When all had gathered around, he reverently began to speak.

With Old Stories, New and Strong: An Interview with Author James Bradley Richard Salzberg 2004 This article appeared in a September 2004 issue of Port Folio Weekly Magazine With Old Stories, New and Strong: An Interview with Author James Bradley By Richard Salzberg On Saturday, September 18, at 5 p.m. James Bradley will speak at Broad Street Books, at 359 Broad Street in Portsmouth as part of an eleven-city tour for the publication of the paperback edition of Flyboys. With that book on the New York Times bestseller list for twenty weeks, Mr. Bradley is also the author of Flags of our Fathers , a #1 bestseller in 2000; and movie rights for both books have been acquired by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and HBO. Raised in Wisconsin, Mr. Bradley studied at Notre Dame and Tokyo’s Sophia University, graduating with a degree in East Asian History from the University of Wisconsin. Mr. Bradley is currently at work on his third book, The China Mirage . _______________________________________ Q: Flags of our Fathers began as a personal sort of odyssey, with your dad John Bradley having been one of the six flagraisers atop Mt. Suribachi on Iwo Jima in February of 1945, made legendary by AP photographer Joe Rosenthal. How did this story become a major book? A: I didn’t set out to write a book.

  • 280 James Bradley James Bradley, Author of the Famous Popular History
280 book reviews James Bradley The China Mirage: The Hidden History of American Disaster in Asia (New York: Little, Brown and Company, 2015). 417 pp. $35 (cloth). James Bradley, author of the famous popular history (and major motion pic- ture) Flags of Our Fathers, has continued to plumb the legacy of his family’s war record, this time taking on the wisdom and necessity of the u.s. war against Japan. He does not mince words: Washington’s decision to cut off Japan’s access to oil in the autumn of 1941 was a foolish decision and forced an otherwise reti- cent Japan into attacking u.s. naval forces at Pearl Harbor. This decision, he writes, “thrust America into an unwanted Asian war,” for which his “father and millions of others” need not have risked or sacrificed their lives (p. 8). According to Bradley, the root of the problem was the obsessive and wholly unrealistic American attachment to China and (in his words) the “Noble Chinese Peasant.” Ultimately most concerned with the impulses that drove the Roosevelt administration’s Pacific strategy in the 1930s and 1940s, he begins with a chapter on Warren Delano, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s grandfa- ther, who made a fortune in the opium business in China in the mid-19th Century. Like so many other Westerners who had little access to or knowledge of China beyond the high walls of the treaty ports, Delano viewed China as both backwards and eminently salvageable. Crucially, then, Warren Delano not only imparted to his family an immense personal fortune, but also an image of China that was wildly oversimplified and paternalistic.

All the Best Podcast Episode 9: “Courage Under Fire: Chi Chi Jima” Featuring Author James Bradley James: Here's some reflections from President Bush after he was shot down in Chichijima and rescued by the Finback submarine. "I'll never forget the beauty of the Pacific, the flying fish, the stark wonder of the sea, the waves breaking across the bow. It was absolutely dark in the middle of the Pacific. The night's so clear and stars so brilliant. It was wonderful and energizing, the time to talk to God. I had time to reflect, to go deep inside myself and search for answers. People talk about a kind of foxhole Christianity where you're in trouble and you think you're going to die, so you want to make everything right with God and everyone else right there in the last minute, but this was just the opposite of that. I had already faced death and God had spared me. I had this very deep and profound gratitude and a sense of wonder. Sometimes when there's a disaster, people will pray. Why me? In an opposite way, I had the same question. Why had I been spared and what did God have in store for me? One of the things I realized out there all alone was how much family meant to me. Having faced death and been given another chance to live, I could see just how important those values and principles were that my parents taught me, and of course I thought about how much I loved Barbara, the girl I knew I would marry.
