Whatthey could 'judge for themselves" is clear enough-a quickly assembled selection of over six hundred modernist works of art seized from museums throughout Germany. Just what kind of an event Ziegler invites the German Volkto take part in has proven, however, a little more difficult to decipher. Although the exhibition can clearly be classified as a species of propaganda- the fascist art form nonpareil-when critics turn their attention to DegenerateArt they tend to forget they are examining propaganda and concentrate instead on what the Nazis do, or fail to do, as curators of an exhibition of modernist art. As such, DegenerateArt is judged extraordinarily incompetent: the pictures are hung too closely together; works are incorrectly attributed and labeled; groupings meant to represent a single artistic movement (say Dadaism) include works from quite unrelated movements (like Der Blaue Reiter);quotations from artists and critics are displayed without regard for either their accuracy or their original contexts. Through this flurry of corrections postwar art historians express their desire to overcome the past. Yet reprimanding these art-historical errors does not help us understand the spectacle and function of DegenerateArt. Whatever else they reveal about the function of modernist art in Nazi propaganda, the mistakes must also be seen as integral to the exhibition, displays by the National Socialist state of its power to exercise its will with impunity. Casual errors flaunt the speed with which this state was able to expropriate works from museums all over Germany so as to erect the exhibition in less than three weeks. "Mirror;' mirror,on the wall, who the however, simply to reiterate the rejected discourse and categories of modernism is obtuse. Instead, we need to think about how the curatorial structure of this exhibition reflects its function as propaganda. Goebbels' Ministry for Propaganda and Popular Enlightenment planned Degenerate Art as a counter-exhibition to the first annual exhibition of Great GermanArt, which opened in Munich's newly conse- crated House of German Art on July 18, 1937. DegenerateArt opened a day later in the same city's Archaeological Institute-an appropriate enough venue for works that were to be consigned to the dustbin of history. As I will be arguing, the way to a productive interpretation of Degenerate Art lies in taking seriously the implications of its role as a counter-exhibition. In formulating this purpose, Goebbels emphasized the need to distinguish The Degenerate Art Exhibition as Political Spectacle 43 between "the arts of those days and the art of our days."2Yet the very need to make this distinction, to stage it so publicly, suggests that the difference between the two periods in art was a matter of some uncertainty. The works of German Expressionism that constitute the bulk of DegenerateArt had actually been the subject of much dispute in the early years of the National Socialist regime. When we look at the main ideological positions for and against a "National Socialist revolutionary art" that would have included Emil Nolde and Ernst Barlach (both of whom ended up in DegenerateArt), we see the extent to which the exhibition symbolically resolves and retrospectively disavows the vexed question of the historical place of German Expressionism within Nazism. Not only artistic movements but also iconic figures about which the Nazis were ambivalent-Christ, in particular-appear in DegenerateArt. Here again, the Nazis' treatment of ambivalence offers us a fulcrum through which to think about the relationship between the two exhibitions. For many of the works displayed in this counter-exhibition are presented as "sullied" reflections of the same generic images the Nazis sanctified as Great GermanArt: farmers, soldiers, mothers, and landscapes. Yet what is most interesting about the structural relation between the two exhibitions is where it breaks down, as it does when we examine the logic of DegenerateArt's spectacular display of "mocking" images of Christ in its opening gallery. Ultimately, the Nazis' concern with "degenerate" representations of a figure about whom they were highly equivocal makes far more sense when understood (as will be developed further on) in relation to how the Great German Art Exhibition presents images of the sacred. Furthermore, conspicuously absent from DegenerateArt are John Heartfield's photomontages from the late 1920s and early 1930s. As a devastating satirist of Nazi party policy and pretensions, Heartfield is an artist whose works one might well have expected to see in this exhibition: the Nazis, one would think, would have had much to gain by devaluing his work. In this light, Heartfield's exclusion suggests the criteria for inclusion in the exhibition and the strategies by which the Nazis stripped "degenerate" art works of their aura-strategies to which Heartfield's works were peculiarly immune. The omission of Heartfield's work from DegenerateArt forces us to ask about the limits of the displayable in the exhibition. The disputes about Expressionism within Nazism, the relentlessly materializing manner of the exhibition's display structure (in which the works are presented as overpriced commodities), and the ultimate expulsion of these works from the German public sphere as so much dirt, or, following Mary Douglas, as "matter out of place"3-all of this points to DegenerateArt as an attempt to construct modernist art as abject,as analogous to 2. Mary Douglas, Purity and Danger (London: Routledge, 1966), p. 35. 44 OCTOBER that part of the self that must be expelled for it to (continue to) be constituted as "clean and proper," and the return of which threatens it with psychotic dissolution.4 At the same time, these sources of abjection are works of art the Nazis managed to integrateinto their propaganda. If popular interest in the exhibi- tion lead to its run in Munich being extended (over two million people are reported to have seen the show), it is clear that whatever danger the Nazis attributed to "degenerate" art works, this was a danger they thought their display could contain. Does DegenerateArt compel us to start thinking in terms of an internally differentiated notion of the abject? Specifically, should we see material like Heartfield's, excluded even from a controlled display of the "degenerate," as a kind of second-order abject, that which the Nazis expel but cannot even bear to disavow publicly before doing so, an abject that cannot even be integrated into or contained by propaganda exhibitions? Does this material really threaten the Nazi self with the political equivalent of psychotic dissolution more acutely than the works exhibited as "degenerate"? Or does such inquiry incorrectly attribute to Nazism'too consistent a visual culture, too truth-oriented a version of ideology? TheArt of OurDays If the divide between "Degenerate" and "Great German" art is marked by time-by Goebbels' distinction between "the arts of those days and the art of our days"-then the tertiumcomparitionis that enables the parallel is place, in particular, national territory: both exhibitions focus on Germanart. Adolf Ziegler and his assistants, whom Goebbels empowered to "select" works for DegenerateArt and, more generally, to clear German museums of works produced after 1910 that were symptomatic of the decay the Nazis ascribed to this era, did seize works by non- German modernist artists and could have displayed them, but they did not.

Reid) Through a series of case studies of French-German friendship societies, this dissertation investigates the ways in which activists in France and Germany battled the dominant strains of nationalism to overcome their traditional antagonism. It asks how the Germans and the French recast their relationship as “hereditary enemies” to enable them to become partners at the heart of today’s Europe. Looking to the transformative power of civic activism, it examines how journalists, intellectuals, students, industrialists, and priests developed associations and lobbying groups to reconfigure the French-German dynamic through cultural exchanges, bilingual or binational journals, conferences, lectures, exhibits, and charitable ventures. As a study of transnational cultural relations, this dissertation focuses on individual mediators along with the networks and institutions they developed; it also explores the history of the idea of cooperation. Attempts at rapprochement in the interwar period proved remarkably resilient in the face of the prevalent nationalist spirit. While failing to override hostilities and sustain peace, the campaign for cooperation adopted a new face in the misguided shape of collaborationism during the Second World War.

    „One-sidedly Artistic“ Georg Kolbe in the Nazi Era By Ursel Berger 0 One of the most discussed topics concerning Georg Kolbe involves his work and his stance during the Nazi era. These questions have also been at the core of all my research on Kolbe and I have frequently dealt with them in a variety of publications 1 and lectures. Kolbe’s early work and his artistic output from the nineteen twenties are admired and respected. Today, however, a widely held position asserts that his later works lack their innovative power. This view, which I also ascribe to, was not held by most of Kolbe’s contemporaries. In order to comprehend the position of this sculptor as well as his overall historical legacy, it is necessary, indeed crucial, to examine his œuvre from the Nazi era. It is an issue that also extends over and beyond the scope of a single artistic existence and poses the overriding question concerning the role of the artist in a dictatorship. Georg Kolbe was born in 1877 and died in 1947. He lived through 70 years of German history, a time characterized by the gravest of political developments, catastrophes and turning points. He grew up in the German Empire, celebrating his first artistic successes around 1910. While still quite young, he was active (with an artistic mission) in World War I. He enjoyed his greatest successes in the Weimar Republic, especially in the latter half of the nineteen twenties—between hyperinflation and the Great Depression. He was 56 years old when the Nazis came to power in 1933 and 68 years old when World War II ended in 1945.

    Degenerate Art – 80 Years: Repercussions in Brazil (São Paulo, 25-27 Apr 18) São Paulo, Museu de Arte Contemporânea, Apr 25–27, 2018 Deadline: Mar 9, 2018 Erika Zerwes In 1937 the German government, led by Adolf Hitler, opened a large exhibition of modern art with about 650 works confiscated from the country's leading public museums entitled Degenerate Art (Entartete Kunst). Marc Chagall, Otto Dix, Max Ernst, George Grosz, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, László Moholy-Nagy, Piet Mondrian and Lasar Segall were among the 112 artists who had works selected for the show. Conceived to be easily assimilated by the general public, the exhibition pre- sented a highly negative and biased interpretation of modern art. The Degenerate Art show had a rather large impact in Brazil. There have been persecutions to modern artists accused of degeneration, as well as expressions of support and commitment in the struggle against totalitarian regimes. An example of this second case was the exhibition Arte condenada pelo III Reich (Art condemned by the Third Reich), held at the Askanasy Gallery (Rio de Janeiro, 1945). The event sought to get support from the local public against Nazi-fascism and to make modern art stand as a synonym of freedom of expression. In the 80th anniversary of the Degenerate Art exhibition, the University of São Paulo’s Museum of Contemporary Art, in partnership with the Lasar Segall Museum, holds the International Seminar “Degenerate Art – 80 Years: Repercussions in Brazil”. The objective is to reflect on the repercus- sions of the exhibition Degenerate Art (Entartete Kunst) in Brazil and on the persecution of mod- ern art in the country in the first half of the 20th century.

The group disbanded in 1913, largely due to their varying styles and independent moves to Berlin, but each remained true to their rejection of European academic painting and conventions in favor of exploring the vitality and directness of non-Western art forms, particularly West African masks and Oceanic art, as well as revitalization of the pre-Renaissance tradition of German woodcuts. Some months earlier, Jo- seph Goebbels, the propaganda minister, had announced a ban on art criticism, as “a legacy of the Jewish influence.” “Degenerate Art” was a blockbuster, far outdrawing a show that had opened the day before, a short walk away, in a new edifice, dear to Hitler, called the House of German Art. “The Great German Art Exhibition” had been planned to demonstrate a triumphant new spirit in the nation’s high culture, but the preponderance of academic hackery in the work produced for it came as a rankling disappointment to Hitler, whose taste was blinkered but not blind. By official count, more than two million visitors thronged “Degen- erate Art” during its four-month run in Munich. Little is recorded of what they thought, but the American critic A. I. Philpot remarked, in the Boston Globe, that “there are probably plenty of people—art lovers—in Boston who will side with Hitler in this particular purge.” Germany had no monopoly on ou might not expect much drama the works.

    Volume 7. Nazi Germany, 1933-1945 Hitler’s Speech at the Opening of the House of German Art in Munich (July 18, 1937) On the day before the start of the “Degenerate Art” exhibition, Hitler concurrently opened the House of German Art in Munich, a new museum designed by architect Paul Ludwig Troost (1873-1934), and its first show, the “Great German Art Exhibition.” The House of German Art was built on the former site of the Glass Palace, a grandly conceived iron and glass exhibition hall dating from the mid-nineteenth century. The Glass Palace had been destroyed in a fire, reportedly the result of arson, on June 6, 1931. At the time of its destruction, the Glass Palace housed an extensive exhibition of German Romantic paintings by masters Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), Phillipp Otto Runge (1777-1810), and others. In his opening speech, Hitler referred to the destruction of both the Glass Palace and the works exhibited therein. He mourned the loss of paintings that he perceived as genuinely “German,” the point of comparison being the modern artworks that Hitler reviled and disparaged as Bolshevist, Jewish, foreign, etc. For Hitler, the rehabilitation of Germany in the wake of 1918 was not just a matter of politics or economics but also, and even primarily, a matter of culture and art. Hitler saw the construction of the House of German Art and the organization of the “Great German Art Exhibition” as an opportunity for the Third Reich to define a new concept for a great and truly “German” art.
