John 9: Heals a Man Born Blind “I was blind but now I see!” (John 9:25) Introduction: 1. A word about verse 3…

Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him”. (John 9:3)

“Blindness in this case is not a consequence of an individual’s sin but an occasion for the works of God to be manifested (v.3). The man’s blindness will create an opportunity for healing that will reveal the goodness of God and the identity of Jesus.” (2018, May). The Man Born Blind. Table Talk Magazine, 42 (No 5), p. 49.

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28)

2. The healing of the man born blind is one of seven signs recorded in the of John.

“The signs of Jesus proved that He is the Christ, the very Son of God. When Jesus performed a sign, He was making the case for who He is.” (The Seven Signs by Anthony T. Selvaggio, p.9)

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. (:30-31)

3. Metaphors in John 9:

Light & Darkness -

Sight & Blindness –

4. Jesus is the :

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (:1-5)

Again Jesus spoke to them saying, “ the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (:12)

Bible Study:

1. What does this account reveal to us about the person and work of Jesus?

2. Consider how the neighbors (vv.8-13), the (vv.14-17, 24-34) and the man’s parents (vv.18-23) responded. What is remarkable about the man’s response? What miraculous transformation has taken place?

Application:

1. To what extent are you walking in darkness? Are you blinded by your sin or unbelief? Burdened by guilt or feelings of inadequacy? Weighed down with sorrow, pain, or disease?

2. What difference does it make to you and to your circumstances that Jesus is the light of the world? How can your life by transformed by the light? How has your life already been transformed by the light? Praise God for the sight he has given you.
