As a minority institution Arul Anandar College caters primarily to the formation of Christian students. On the right lower panel, a silver star rises above and lights up the green hills, the sky being shown in light blue, stands for a pioneering institution shedding its light on the neighbouring countryside. 8 Arul Anandar College On the left upper panel, a sheaf of paddy stands for agricultural plenty which the college aims at by its ideal of rural service. A golden crest IHS with a cross and nails surmounts the shield. The Crest (IHS: the name of Jesus) is the emblem of the Society of Jesus which owns this college. On the left, a palm frond flanks the shield signifying the sacrifice made by the patron of our college, the Martyr St John de Britto (Arul Anandar) in the cause of Truth and Justice. Following this motto, AAC strives to bring about social transformation, in the rural neighbourhood through its ideal of loving service flowing from the humanity of Jesus Christ. At the bottom is found the motto of the college Work,- Justice and Love - inscribed in dark blue on a golden scroll. The colours Gold, Blue and Maroon stand for the ideals of Work, Justice and Love contained in the motto. Arul Anandar College professes a philosophy of hard work coupled with a passion for justice and love signifying truth especially of the marginalized. OUR FOUNDER: ST IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA St Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus was born in Spain in 1491 in a noble family. While undergoing treatment for an injury sustained in the battle at Pamplona, he read the Gospel and the Lives of Saints, that changed his life. Later he studied Philosophy and Theology and was ordained a priest in 1537. With a band of a few well-educated friends, he laid
Handbook 2018-19 9 the foundation of theSociety of Jesus in 1540. The Spiritual Exercises and The Constitutions of the Society of Jesus are two of his legacy to the Jesuits and the world at large. The former helps to reflect on God, Self, and the relevance of the mission of Jesus Christ to the world inviting every one to become woman and man for others; and, the latter contains the rules and regulations for the governance of the Society of Jesus.
OUR PATRON: ST ARUL ANANDAR St Arul Anandar (St John de Britto), is the Patron of our college. Born in Lisbon in 1647 in a wealthy and aristocratic family and brought up in a rich and royal atmosphere, he became a Jesuit and volunteered to come to India in September 1673. He is one of the many Jesuit Missionaries who worked in the Madurai Mission, India. Brilliant and young Britto was offered a professorial chair at a college in Goa but he preferred to come to Madurai and work in the interior villages. Between 1675 and 1687 he dressed himself as an Indian sannyasi (Pandaraswamy). He was known as Arulanandarsamy, eating only vegetarian food on plantain leaf, and squatting on the floor for study and teaching. He entered the kingdom of the Maravas, the present Ramanathapuram and Sivagangai districts and began his work there. Great opposition, resistance and persecution were his rewards, which he faced with a gentle smile. He had the courage to condemn the wrong doings of both the mighty and the lowly. The conversion of Prince Thadiya Thevar incensed his enemies to persecute him and he was beheaded at Oriyur on February 4, 1693. His very name ‘Arul Anandar’ means one who is filled with the grace and joy of the Lord which he manifested by his service to humanity and perseverance in suffering. He 10 Arul Anandar College continues to inspire all through his dedication, devotion and determination, exhibiting grace and joy.
BRIEF HISTORY OF AAC 1970: The College was founded as De La Salle College by the late Most Rev. Dr Justin Diraviam, Archbishop of Madurai Diocese with Pre University Course and UG Courses in Economics and Philosophy. 1971: BSc Mathematics was introduced. 1972: Renamed as Arul Anandar College, it became a Jesuit institution. 1973: Undergraduate Courses in Rural Development Science 1975: Bharat Ratna and Nobel Laureate Saint Mother Teresa of Kolkata, founder of the Missionaries of Charity graced the campus 1979: BSc Chemistry was introduced. 1980: BA History was introduced. 1980: MSc RDS was introduced. 1984: MA Economics was introduced. 1986: MA Philosophy was introduced. 1987: AAC becomes an autonomous college. 1987: The Alumni Association was inaugurated. 1988: BSc Physics was introduced. 1989: MPhil Economics was introduced. 1995: The Parent-Teacher Association began. 1999: Self-financed Courses in MCA and BCom with Computer Applications were started. 2000: Computer Literacy programme was initiated. 2000: Dept. of RDS becomes a Research Centre. AAC now has ‘A’ Grade (CGPA – Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.66 out of 4) in 2014 in the NAAC Re-accreditation. It is a creditable achievement! The grant of Autonomy to AAC in 1987 implies that there is freedom: a. to frame the Syllabus; b. to innovate Teaching Methods; and c. to adopt suitable Evaluation Procedures. AAC has introduced CHOICE BASED CREDIT SYSTEM in 2003 for UG–Aided Courses and RESTRUCTURED CBCS in 2012. This CBCS is student-friendly and thus offers a variety of courses to choose from, as a student seeks to major in a Subject. Credits are assigned based on the hours to be necessarily spent to fulfill the requirements of a course. The courses are offered by every department of the college. CHOICE BASED CREDIT SYSTEM (CBCS) AAC introduced Choice Based Credit System for the UG courses in the Academic Year 2003. The CBCS based on the guidelines of the Government of Tamil Nadu was introduced for all the UG and PG Courses in 2008. The same was revised and introduced from the academic year 2012-2013.

(The other NCC wings are: Navy, Airwing, Armoured Squadron etc). Our Army unit is called 7/14 Arul Anandar College and is attached to 14 (TN) BN NCC, Dindigul. NCC provides opportunities to participate at several types of camps including the Republic Day Parade in New Delhi. A maximum of 120 students drawn from the three years, serve as members of our NCC unit. At every year around 40 first year students may get enrolled into NCC. An NCC student may be a part of the NCC programmes for a maximum period of three years. He/She can participate at the B - Certificate Examination at the end of the second year and can pariticipate at the C - Certificate Examination at the end of the third year. A NCC student obtains two credits by his/her participation at the NCC programmes for a minimum period of two years.
National Service Scheme (NSS) • NSS conducts many development - oriented programmes, through which the students imbibe leadership qualities with the view to promoting a sense of social concern. • NSS at AAC has six units, functioning under a co-ordinator. • Each unit is headed by a Programme-Officer. • A maximum of 100 students are members of each unit. • The Government of India and the University recognize the contribution of the staff and students of NSS and suitably award them on their exhibiting excellent performance through NSS. • By participation at NSS a student can obtain two credits. • The NSS programme for a student begins in the year I and ends year II. Handbook 2018-19 55 • The Unit may retain some students in the year III to perform some special development oriented functions. • The marks are given based on the functions by the students. • When the performance of the students is not found to be satisfactory, a student has to repeat the exercises required to gain credit. Physical Education • Physical Education conducts many programmes aiming at the overall (Physical, Intellectual, Moral, Social and Spiritual) developments of the students through the Sports and Games. • This course is for two years: Year I : Physical Education –I Year II : Physical Education – II • There is one credit for each year. • These courses have both Theory and Practical. • The Theory explains Fundamentals of Physical Education Health Education Safety Education and Rules of Sports and Games • Students will be assessed in Theory and Practicals through the following components: Writing an Assignment - 10 marks Viva-Voce - 20 marks Trekking - 20 marks Practicals for testing of skills - 50 marks Youth Red Cross (YRC) - YRC conducts health-related programmes such as First Aid Training, Gold Hour of Life-Saving Mission, Blood Donation, AIDS Awareness Programmes, Organ Donation Awareness etc. 56 Arul Anandar College - Students are recruited in Semester I for this YRC programme. The ROTARACT students participate at many awareness programmes such as Use of Helmet, Planting of Trees, Campaigning for Hygiene Maintenance etc. Obtaining donations and suggestions from well-wishers, they help the needy by providing to the most-deserving, the much required things for immediate use. - A maximum of 75 students are recruited every year. The ROTARACT programme lasts for 90 working days in the First Four Semesters (I-IV). - Participation at ROTARACT programmes carriestwo credits. ARul Anandar Initiatives for Social Education (ARISE) ARISE is a compulsory extension programme carrying one-credit to be gone through outside the class hours and outside the campus during Semesters III & IV. (Contact Arise Co-ordinator) ARISE links lab with land. It signifies Pattikattai Noki Palkalai Kalagam (University to the Villages). Established in 1995 by Rev. Dr Michael Dass D L SJ, ARISE involves collaboration with Voluntary Organizations, Government officials and the local leaders. The initiatives provide an opportunity to the students to reach out to the people. With the knowledge and the skill gathered, the students are to animate people and help them to develop themselves by mobilizing the locally available resources. Women Studies Centre (WSC) - The WSC was established in 2009. - It offers a two-credit NME Introduction to Gender Studies in Semester III to the UG Students. - The WSC seeks to disseminate information relating to gender-based issues to women students. 64 Arul Anandar College SCHEME OF VALUATION All the papers (UG / PG and Theory / Practical) carry an Internal Component and External Component, each having 100 marks. VALUATION SCHEME AAC, under autonomy, conducts two types of Assessment: Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA) and Semester End Examinations (SEE). . Under the CIA, students participate in a Semester for each course, at: a. Two College-Organised Tests b. Department-Arranged Second Component Tests a. TWO COLLEGE-ORGANISED TESTS - Conducted by the Controller of Examinations - The concerned are to meet the Principal in case of any clash of programme. - Duration: UG Test - 90 minutes PG & MPhil Test - 120 minutes - The course-teacher allots the portion for CIA-I (generally two units) - Each College-Organized Test carries a maximum of 40 Marks. b. THE DEPARTMENT-ARRANGED SECOND COMPONENT OF CIA - The course-teacher effectively administers this Second Component having forms such as: Quiz, snap-test, written assignment etc. - This assessment is student-oriented. - The course-teacher explains the nature and the requirement of this assessment.
Handbook 2018-19 65 - This Assessment may be from the start of the Semester. - This Second Component of CIA accounts for a maximum of 20 Marks, of which five marks may be for attendance. Through CIA, a student may get a maximum of 100 marks (40+40+20) which in the final analysis is converted to 50 marks. Mode of Administering the Formative Semester End Examinations . Under the CIA, students participate in a Semester for each paper . The SEEs mark the Second Major Phase of Assessment. . The SEEs take place after the completion of the 90 contact days in each semester. Time-Table . The finalized Time-table is exhibited at least 20 days before the start of the SEE. . The concerned are to meet the Principal in case of any clash of programme. SEMESTER END EXAMINATIONS: UG COURSES Theory (Parts I - IV) : A student should secure a minimum of 40% in the theory paper. Practical: The valuation is as follows: . For the record work done - 30 marks . For completing other requirements - 20 marks . For assessing the assignment - 50 marks. . In case of failures in practicals, the candidate can appear in the following year. There is no repetition of practicals in the current year for the candidate.

Part V Extension courses (offered out-side the class hours) are evaluated as follows: Semester I Bridge Course - 1 credit Semesters III & IV ARISE - 1 credit Semesters I to IV NCC/NSS/Physical Education/YRC/ROTARACT/AICUF/ Nature Club - 2 credits Part V Failures The students are assessed by the respective Faculty in-charge. In case of Part V failures, the candidates can appear only in the following year. Self Learning Courses: Each Self Learning Course has only SEE. Each carries three credits. Transparency: On the ‘Transparency Day’ the UG Students have an opportunity to verify their corrected answer scripts. There is no Transparency for PG. Career Oriented Courses: Examination is conducted and certificate is issued. The Passing Minimum: For UG courses: 40% for external and 40% in the aggregate
Handbook 2018-19 67 SEMESTER END EXAMINATIONS: PG COURSES ‘SEE’ VALUATION: PG & MPhil . ‘Double Valuation’ system is followed for all PG and MPhil Courses. . The course-teacher does the First Valuation. . The External Examiner does the Second Valuation. . If the difference between the two valuations exceeds 10%, another External Examiner conducts the ‘Third Valuation’ as recommended by Chairperson. . Then the average of the nearest two marks is awarded to the candidate. Theory : A student should secure a minimum of 50% in the theory paper. Practical : The valuation is as follows: . For the record work done - 30 marks . For completing other requirements - 20 marks . For assessing the assignment - 50 marks . In case of failures in practicals, the candidate can appear in the following year. There is no repetition of practicals in the current year for the candidate. The Passing Minimum : For PG courses: 45% for external and 50% in the aggregate ADDITIONAL FACILITIES AFTER THE CIAs & SEE • SPECIAL ‘CIA’ If a student is unable to appear for the CIA, as he/ she is a participant at some common NCC/NSS/Physical Education programmes etc not organised by the College, or if the student reports sick, then on the recommendation of the HOD concerned, the Principal may permit him/ her to take that CIA within a short while after his/ her rejoining the college. 68 Arul Anandar College The course-teacher conducts this Special CIA and sends the Marks to the COE through the HOD concerned. • DOUBLING ‘CIA–I’ MARKS If a student is unable to appear for the CIA-II, either due to representing the College or due to unavoidable medical grounds; then on the recommendation of the HOD concerned, the Principal may permit doubling the ‘CIA-I’ marks. • CIA IMPROVEMENT If a student fails to secure a Pass Mark in the Aggregate, despite he/ she obtaining a Pass Mark in the SEE he/she can apply to appear for improving CIA. o CIA Improvement is conducted for a paper only once. o A candidate has to apply within one month from the date of publication of the results. o There is no prescribed minimum marks for CIA. o Candidates have to pay the prescribed FEES along with the application. o For UG, Fees per course is Rs 400/- o For PG, Fees per course is Rs 500/- o All the components of the CIA have to be gone through. o The course-teacher submits through the HoD to the COE all the particulars relevant to the CIA exercise completed: The question papers of the two tests, answer scripts and assignment and the marks for each and the consolidated mark. o For UG Courses of Parts I, II & IV The students may appear for CIA only after Semester – IV. o For UG Courses of Part III The students may appear for CIA only after Semester – VI. o For PG Courses The students may appear for CIAI only after Semester – IV. Handbook 2018-19 69 c. REVALUATION Only for UG Arrear and for PG students A student can apply for revaluation on payment within the time COE specifies. d. SUPPLEMENTARY EXAMINATIONS . Supplementary Examinations (Theory) are conducted for the papers of the final semester only. . Candidates who do not have any arrears in the earlier semesters and have not been absent for the particular paper in the final semester are eligible. e. ARREAR EXAMINATIONS . Private candidates (those who have completed the UG course) may be permitted to appear for arrear examinations to the maximum of TEN papers in the SEE. . Present candiates (those who are now pursuing their degree programme), may be permitted to appear for arrear examinations to the maximum FOUR papers in SEE. Examination Instruction FOR THE ATTENTION OF ALL: Late-Comers will be allowed to enter the hall only after the distribution of the question-papers is completed. Late-Comers will enter only with the permission of the Invigilator concerned. 1. The AAC administration seeks to provide a conducive climate towards the candidates at the examination, as it regards conducting Examinations as a sacred responsibility for all the units of the college. 2. All are to be familiar with the Examination Time-Table and Seating Arrangement in the Examination Venue exhibited well-in advance. 70 Arul Anandar College 3. All are to be present at least 10 minutes before the start of the examinations. At the stroke of the First-Bell for the Examinations, all are to move towards the venue of the Examination. 4. While entering the venue, the candidates are to be ready to show his/her Identity Card and Hall Ticket. The candidates are permitted to bring inside the venue only the required materials for the purposes of writing the examination. 5. The candidates occupy the assigned seats and fill up legibly the particulars required in the Main Answer Sheet provided. 6. Perfect Silence should prevail at the venue during the time of the Examination. 7. At the stroke of the Second Bell, all keep standing for a short prayer. 8. The candidates check up whether they have received their correct and full question papers. They are further to verify the Course Code and Course Title of that day’s examination, they are to write. 9. They are to sign within the first 30 minutes, in the CANDIDATES ATTENDANCE REGISTER brought by the Invigilator. 10. Before that signing, the Invigilator is entitled to verify the entries made in the Main Answer Sheet, besides ensuring whether the rule of ‘Seating Arrangement is followed. The candidates should remember to have all their Main and Additional Answer Sheets signed by the invigilator. 11. The candidates seek help from the invigilators by raising their hands. 12. The candidates are allowed to move out of the venue only during the last 30 minutes of the examinations. Extra-ordinary silence is to be maintained during this time.

At the stroke of the Last Bell, the candidates hand over their answer sheets to the invigilators. 15. The candidates leave the examination-venue in silence. 16. Your presence at the venue for the entire duration of the examination at no moment be a nuisance to others. Eligibility for Supplementary Examinations • Supplementary Examinations will not be conducted for Part IV, Part V, Practicals & Projects. • For UG : Only Three Papers are permitted, of which Only one may be from those of Semesters I – V. • For PG : Only Three Papers are permitted, of which Only one may be from those of Semesters I – III. Career Oriented Courses (COCs) The University Grants Commission, New Delhi, selected our college in 2005 to conduct COC Courses. These courses sponsored by UGC meant to provide skills to the students. Valuation i. Theory Examinations - Paper I and Paper II carrying 100 marks each - The Course Teacher sets the question papers and values the answer-scripts. ii. There will also be a Practical Examination for each course for 100 marks.

RULES AND REGULATIONS a. Admission i. The UG Applicants should have completed 17 years and 6 months on the 15th day of July of the current year. ii. All admissions are provisional and are subject to the approval of the University. iii. The Principal reserves the right to cancel the admission of a provisionally-selected applicant.
76 Arul Anandar College b. Fees Regulation i. Students are to pay their college fees at the start of every semester. ii. Students withdrawing from the college during the course of the year are required to pay the entire college fees and other fees of that year. iii. Students shall pay the examination fees, on or before the date announced in the college calendar. iv. Irrespective of the receipts of scholarships, all fees must be paid within the stipulated time. c. Attendance i. Students are to follow the norms and guidelines of MKU: Students with attendance of 75% and more (i.e., 68 days and more) in a semester are permitted to write the examinations. Students with 50% and less than 50% (44 days of attendance and less) have to repeat the semester. A student has to pay a condonation fee, when he/she lacks the required attendance. ii. 75% attendance is a pre-requisite for ; a. Permission to write the Semester Exams b. Award of Scholarships of any kind. iii. Students are expected to attend classes everyday. A student may avail himself/herself of leave only for genuine reasons and after obtaining permission from the Vice-Principal. iv. Attendance of students is marked in a register by the respective teacher for every period. v. Students are expected to check their attendance in the Intra-net (at the Digital Library). Attendance of students is available on the internet at the home page www.aactni.edu.in. In case of any discrepancy, they should meet the Vice -Principal with the note from their Head of the Department within two days.

If he / she is absent for three periods on a day he / she is marked absent for the one full-day. vii. Warning-Letters are sent to the parents of the students who are irregular in attendance. Other Duty Attendance i. Students participating at co-curricular and extra-curricular activities should obtain permission from the Vice-Principal through the respective authorities. ii. On their return, their leave-forms should be submitted to the Vice-Principal through proper channel. iii. A maximum of 15 days only per semester is permitted for a student on Other Duty Attendance. d. Leave-Letter i. A leave-letter must be duly signed by parents / guardian / warden for genuine reasons well in advance with the prior approval of the HOD. ii. In the case of unforeseen circumstances, a leave-letter must be submitted on the first day of the student returning to the class. iii. Medical leave-letter must be submitted to the Vice-Principal along with a medical certificate. e. General Discipline i. Students are to wear the Identity Card within the college campus and while representing our college elsewhere. ii. Talking in English in the college-premises is mandatory. iii. At the stroke of the first bell all students are to move towards the classroom and occupy their seats.

The students are expected to keep standing in silence during prayer. - For Shift - I: There is a short prayer at 8.25 am, and teaching-learning process begins at 8.30 am. - For Shift - II: There is a short prayer at 1.25 pm, and teaching-learning process begins at 1.30 pm. f. Conduct during Class Hours i. Students should remain standing as the teacher enters, and again as he / she leaves the classroom. ii. Only authorised persons can enter the classroom during working hours. iii. Students should avoid loitering on the verandahs, during class hours. iv. Students should move from one class to another without causing any inconvenience to others. v. Students should maintain dignity and decorum in all common gatherings. g. Notice-Board i. Students are to go through daily, the information displayed on the notice-boards. Ignorance is not as an excuse. ii. Students are not to tamper any notice displayed. iii. Only with the express permission of Fr Principal, any notice can be put up and / any handbill can be circulated. h. Dress Code i. Every student is expected to be in simple and modest formal dress. Girls are expected to be either in saree with sleeved blouse or churidar or salwar kameez with sleeved long kurtha and duppatta. ii. Boys are expected to come in shirt and full pair of pants. T-Shirt is not permitted.

Code of Relationship While the College Administration is for fostering wholesome relationships in our campus among all its members, it expects everyone to take extra-care to scrupulously shun occasions and places involving meetings of members of complementary sexes that invite attention of the authorities. j. Eco-Friendly Zone Students are responsible to keep the campus clean. They should further keep the campus litter-free. Our campus is “Smoke-Free and Plastic-Free”. k. Code of Behaviour i. Use and possession of drinks and drugs imply immediate dismissal from the college. ii. Smoking in the campus (including the college hostel) is prohibited. iii. Under the Educational Rules of the Government, students involved in anti-social activities are liable to be fined, suspended, and expelled. iv. Under the Educational Rules of the Government students resorting to ragging in any form within and outside the campus will be expelled from the college. v. Decent conduct is expected of an AAC student both within and outside the college campus. vi. No AAC student shall be a member of any association or club without the express permission of the Principal. vii. Use of mobile phones is prohibited inside the college campus. Possession / use of cell phones within the campus will invite severe punishment. viii. Decency demands that students are not involved in any kind of wild, noisy and disturbing behaviour during celebrations. ix. Written permission from Fr Principal is required to take tuition from a teacher of our college. xii. Students are not to disfigure identity cards. They are not to damage any college property. xiii. While commuting by bus, foot-board travel is to be avoided. xiv. Malpractice of any form should be avoided. xv. Students may invite speakers, guests inside the campus only with a written permission of the Principal. l. Student - Timings for meeting Office Staff i. Shift I : 02.00 pm - 04.30 pm ii. Students can collect SSLC Certificates, Higher Secondary Mark Sheets and Other Certificates only at the end of the course. iv. Searching, issuing and returning any library material are done with the help of computers. iv. Working Hours for Library and Browsing Centre: 8.30 am to 6.00 pm on all working days and on Saturdays v. Only with the identity card, a student can enter the library and borrow books. vi. All personal effects such as bags, tiffin-boxes, note-books etc. are to be left at the library-entrance in the place allotted for it. vii. Number of Books that could be borrowed at a time: UG students - 3 PG students - 5 Research Scholars - 8 Teachers - 10 viii. Reference Books such as dictionaries, year-books, encyclopaedia etc. will not be issued. ix. Library books are issued for a period of two weeks, and this period may be extended. x. Books borrowed should be returned on or before the due date indicated in the issue-slip of the book. An over-due fine of Re.1 per day will be charged. xi. Library officials are authorised to ask for the return of any book before the due date. xii. On receiving the Library books, library-users are to make known to the library-official any damage found in them. They are further to verify the book-pocket-card and accession-number to be the same. xiii. Library books and other materials are to be treated with care. xiv. Students are fined for any damage caused to the library materials.

Government of India Scholarship For all the Hindu SC/ST students: The income limit for the parent is Rs. 2,50,000/- b.
