TRAGEDY Egyptian migrants found dead

Libyan aid workers recovered the bodies of 19 migrants believed to be Egyptians in Libya’s eastern desert, a Red Crescent spokesman said yesterday. The migrants appeared to have been smuggled into Libya by foot and have perished due to high temperatures and hunger, said Khaled al-Raqi, a Red Crescent spokesman in the east Libyan city of Tobruk. They were found on Saturday more than 400km south of Tobruk, in the Jaghboub desert, Raqi said. Seven of the migrants were identified from papers or identity cards, and the rest were thought to be Egyptian, he said. The seven came from Assiuyt and Minya, areas on the River Nile south of Cairo, and from Kafr el Sheikh, in the Nile Delta north of Cairo. German caves of world’s oldest ice age art named World Heritage Site

he United Nations Educational, Scientifi c and Cul- tural Organization (Unesco) yesterday named as TWorld Heritage Site a group of caves in Germany that contain the world’s oldest ice age artwork. According to World Heritage Committee, the six caves located in the Swabian Alps of south-western Germany contain the earliest artwork representing fi gures in the world and provide important knowledge of how art de- veloped. Among the archaeological fi nds in the caves was the 40,000-year-old human fi gurine Venus of Hohle Fels. Since the 1860s, excavations in the caves have pro- duced numerous fi gurines from as old 43,000 years ago, including representations of mammoths, lions, horses and musical instruments, as well as female fi gures and animal-human hybrids. The fi nds are among the oldest evidence of artistic ac- tivity by early humans. Cultural experts and historians are meeting until July 12 in southern Poland to decide the status of more than 30 sites nominated to the World Heritage List.
