From 2004 to 2014, he worked as a university researcher and since 2014 has been an Associate Professor in Forest Logging and Wood Technologies. Also since 2004, he has lead the ‘Forest Utilization Work Group’ at Tuscia University (DAFNE). From 2015 to 2017, he served as the president of the Master program of Forest Science “Conservation and Restoration of the Forest Environment and Soil Defense” at Tuscia University (DAFNE). He has served on the board of the PhD programs of “Science and Technologies for Forest and Environmental Management” (2005–2013) and ”Engineering for Energy and Environment” (since 2018) at Tuscia University. His fields of expertise include forest logging, forest mechanization, precision forestry, wood technologies, and the environmental impacts of wood harvesting operations. He has worked as the Italian representative in two EU COST Actions, on silviculture and biomass. Furthermore, he has co-authored 55 peer-reviewed papers in international journals indexed by WoS and Scopus, 15 technical books, and over 150 papers in technical magazines. He also works on the editorial boards of three international scientific journals covering forestry and forest engineering subjects. He is a member of two scientific societies: the Italian Society of Forest Restoration and the Italian Society of Silviculture and Forest Ecology. Roberto Mercurio graduated from the Forestry Sciences program at the University of Florence (Italy). He worked as a senior researcher from 1979 to 1993 and from 1986 to 1992 as Appointed Research Director of Biology Lab at the Experimental Institute for Silviculture. He was employed as an Associate Professor of Forest Management and Silviculture at the Mediterranean University (Reggio Calabria) from 1993, and as a Full Professor from 2001 until the end of 2011. He has taught also at Marche Polytechnic University (Ancona) and Tuscia University (Viterbo). He has served on the board of the Ph.D. program of “Science and Technologies for Forest and Environmental Management” at Tuscia University (1993–2013). From 2004 to 2009, he was the Director of the Department of Agricultural and Forest Systems Management (GESAF) at the Mediterranean University (Reggio Calabria). Furthermore, he is a member of several scientific societies: the Italian Academy of Forest Sciences, the Italian Society of Forest Restoration, and the Academy of Letters Arts and Sciences “F. Petrarca”. His areas of expertise include silviculture, forest management, and forest restoration. vii Preface to ”Ecological Management of Pine Forests” Pine forests are widespread natural forest communities, and pine trees are one of the most-used species for reforestation. Therefore, these stands have large economical, ecological, and social importance, mainly due to their resilience against the effects of climatic changes. Still, this resilience needs to be further improved. Their management attracts the interest of forest engineers, forest owners, and public opinion. As a result, management choices (preservative silvicultural treatment for pine forest or re-naturalization aimed to change forest composition and structure) may sometimes fuel arguments between different opinions in modern society. Box 35, FIN-40351 Jyvaskyla, Finland (Received April 1998) ABSTRACT Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and silver birch (Betuln pendula) were heated for 4-8 h in a steam atmosphere at low temperatures (200-230°C). The birch feedstock decomposed slightly more exten- sively (6.4-10.2 and 13515.2% of the initial DS at 200°C and 225"C, respectively) than the pine feedstock (5.7-7.0 and 11.1-15.2% at 205°C and 230°C. respectively). The results indicated that the differences in mass loss between these feedstocks were due to mainly the fact that carbohydrates (cellulose and hemicelluloses) were more amenable to various degradation reactions than lignin in intact wood. The degradation reactions were also monitored in both cases by determining changes in the elemental composition of the heat-treated products. A large number of NIS, however, cause significant economic, environmental, and health damage. These harmful species are the focus of this study. The total number of harmful NIS and their cumulative impacts are creating a growing burden for the country. We cannot completely stop the tide of new harmful introductions. Perfect screening, detection, and control are technically impossible and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, the Federal and State policies designed to protect us from the worst species are not safeguarding our national interests in important areas. These conclusions have a number of policy implications. First, the Nation has no real national policy on harmful introductions; the current system is piecemeal, lacking adequate rigor and comprehensiveness. Second, many Federal and State statutes, regulations, and programs are not keeping pace with new and spreading non-indigenous pests.

In this article, phytosociological characteristics of seven poorly known associations of grassland communities from the order Halacsyetalia sendtneri are analysed. In order to provide additional descriptions of these communities (with diagnosis and lists of diagnostic, dominant, and constant species), check their phytosociological validity, and confirm their syntaxonomical position, the stands of these communities were compared with 18 associations distributed throughout the area of serpentine outcrops in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. The results of cluster analysis confirmed that the analysed heretofore poorly known associations in the vegetation of open rocky serpentine grasslands are floristically well-defined.

If interspecific competition is ever important for phytophagous insects, it is likely to be observed in the insect guild that feeds in the phloem of trees. We tested for signals of interspecific competition in co-occurring species of pine sawyer beetles Monochamus Megerle (Coleoptera Cerambycidae), generally the largest phloemophagous insects in pines. We evaluated patterns of body size and its correlation with other life-history traits. By studying pine sawyer beetles in different areas (Northeast USA, Southeast USA and Portugal) we assessed the interaction with climate. As predicted under the hypothesis of interspecific competition, there were always clear size differences among coexisting species. As predicted if competition is asymmetric, smaller species were less abun- dant and emerged earlier than the larger species. In the larger and numerically dominant species, sexual size dimorphism was more pronounced and the sex ratio was skewed towards females. In the smaller species, males emerged earlier (protandry), whereas the larger species lacked differences in emergence time or displayed protogyny. Effects of climate only seem to have been expressed in the larger dominant species of each area, whereas the effects of competition in smaller species probably overshadow the effects of climate.

We hypothesized here that, since vascular plants could be good surrogates of lichens in these ecosystems, it would be possible to assess the overall biodiversity of riparian habitats using plant data only.

LATTA The National Aviary, Allegheny Commons West, Pittsburgh, PA 15212; email: [email protected] Abstract: I report an observation of endangered Hispaniolan Crossbill (Loxia megaplaga) feeding on soils near abandoned bauxite mines in the Sierra de Bahoruco, Dominican Republic. Although geophagy has been widely re- ported from a number of bird taxa, especially Neotropical parrots and boreal carduelines, this is the first report of this behavior from birds in the Caribbean. Based on the known ecology of this crossbill and published reports of local soil characteristics, I suggest testable hypotheses on why soils may be ingested by this species, including the crossbills’ need for dietary salts and their need to detoxify the pine seeds which are their main diet items. Aunque la geofagia ha sido registrada ampliamente en nu- merosos taxones de aves, especialmente en loros y carduelínidos boreales, este es el primer registro de esta conducta en el Caribe. Basado en el conocimiento de la ecología de esta especie y en los registros publicados sobre las carac- terísticas de los suelos locales, sugiero una hipótesis comprobable de por qué ingieren barro estas especies que inclu- ye la necesidad de suplementos de sales y de detoxificar las semillas de pino que constituyen el principal artículo de su dieta.
