Extending the CARDON-ARMAND Line

By R. Lavor and Boyd L. Cardon

The Armand family is prevalent and prolific in the notary records. We have extracted 241 pages of Armand names from these records. We were in search of the forebears of our ancestor Maria Armand (Armando), 1st wife of Danielle Salvagiot (Salvageotto, Salvagiotto, or Sarvagiotto). Obviously this has been an arduous task as we combed all of the notary records. We have felt the guiding hand of Providence in identifying to the best of our knowledge and ability what we believe is a correct link to our progenitors.

Please do not submit any of the following information for ordinance work. Any Cardon descendants who are interested in helping perform the ordinances, please contact Boyd L. Cardon at [email protected].

For each person in the pedigree below, we provide the date of the documents identifying the person. We begin with MARIA ARMAND, 1st wife of DANIELLE SALVAGIOT.

To determine someone’s parents: Double the person’s own number, which gives the number of the father; add one more to this number to find the mother. Example: Parents of person #3 are persons #6 and #7; parents of person #7 are persons #14 and #15. Missing numbers reflect gaps in the pedigree.

Lavor has been very helpful in this research. He and his wife Marilyn have been called to preside over the Peru MTC in Lima. They entered the MTC in Provo on Jan 9, 2012. We wish them well.

DID YOU KNOW? Waldensian historians have concluded that the 1686 Extermination attempt by the Duke of Savoy, including the imprisonment of those captured but not killed in the initial attack, killed fully 2/3 of the entire Waldensian population—some 9,000 of the estimated 12,000 Waldensians.

The VERTÙ Ancestors of the ROMAN Family

According to the Waldensian historian Osvaldo Coisson, the name Vertù derives from the old Latin meaning of the term “virtue”: a person who was powerful, courageous. Thus, the Vertù family would have had an ancestor (or a series of them) who were unusually powerful and courageous. (Coisson, I Nomi di Famiglia delle Valli Valdesi [Torre : Subalpina, 1976, pg 158)

The notary records reveal that the family came to the Waldensian Valleys in the 1600s fromVerzuolo, Cuneo, Piedmont, a town about 41 miles southwest of Torino. They were undoubtedly among the Waldensians down on the plains who retreated to the Valleys because of persecution.

Through the parish registers, the Piedmont Project traced the Roman line to (Rev.) Jean Antone SIGNORET, born 1693 at , son of (Capt.) David SIGNORET and his wife Marie APPIA. She was the daughter of (Capt.) Daniel APPIA, born about 1640, of San Giovanni, and his wie Constans VERTÙ, estimated in the Piedmont Project to have been born about 1644.
