Just imagine the Elite 8 of the NCAA Basketball tournament, except instead of college teams, it’s the top eight countries playing for the title. In Canada, it’s a big deal. Actually, it’s more than a big deal. Like the Super Bowl. Its media coverage is so pervasive that to realize it receives almost no coverage at all here in the States is almost depressing and embar- rassing. California, by the way, had two players on this year’s American team. Twenty years ago, our very own Assistant Coach Mark Pederson was among those elite players in the world, and took the Gold for Team Canada (a team that also included former Condor Dan Currie, by the way), and returned to Ottawa on New Year’s Eve for a 20-year Team Canada reunion at the game against the U.S. (don’t even ask what the outcome of the game was, I don’t want to talk about it.) “When you’re part of something special, those memories never go away,” says Pederson. “Years go by and you might never get to see those guys again, so to reunite was a special thing. For some of those guys it had been 15 years since we saw each other.” Pederson was on the World Championship Canadian squad, which went 6-0-1 in the round-robin tourney, out- scoring their opponents 37-16 along the way, and taking down a powerful team from their International rivals, the Soviet Union, in a 3-2 battle on New Year’s Day – in Moscow, nonetheless. The Soviets had future NHLers Alexander Mogilny and Sergei Fedorov, and lost just that once in the whole competition. “Russia in the 80’s was a tough time over there, so it was fun exchanging stories from the experiences off the ice over there as well. The hotel room and the bathroom together were tiny… we had to bring our own ketchup and mustard and used it heavily on all the food, and even brought our own Kraft dinners and stuff. The Canadian Embassy one night had us over for dinner for a couple home-cooked meals and that was a big savior for us.” “We arrived the same time as the US team, went through customs, got to our hotel, checked in, dropped our gear off, ate dinner, and then when we got back to our hotel the US team was just arriving. I guess they spent about six hours at customs.” We’ll blame The Cold War for that. But Pederson’s reunion with members of that squad showed that those memories don’t fade too quickly, and also that the success of the past sits upon the shoulders of the current teams, in keeping tradition. “Looking back on it there was a lot of pressure on us, but certainly nowadays the pressure grows with it being in Canada every couple years and now having turned in a fi ve-peat. But it’s up to the coaching staff to use that his- tory to motivate the team, and it’s up to the players to draw energy from it and make it a positive. You all check your egos at the door and do what you have to do to win.” For more info about the World Juniors and its history, log onto the International Federation at www. iihf.com, or http://www.tsn.ca/World_jrs/.
