SOUTHERN INDIA & SRI LANKA Including The Andaman Islands 15/21 NOVEMBER – 10 DECEMBER 2011 TOUR REPORT LEADER: DAVE FARROW This was the first Birdquest to combine Southern India with Sri Lanka, and it proved to be a winning combination, further enhanced by a six day pre-extension to the Andaman Islands. This allowed us to see a total of 394 species that included a fantastic variety of South Asian endemics. On the Andaman Islands we saw all 20 of the available endemics, we had stunning views of jay-walking Andaman Crake, plus Andaman Cuckoo-Dove, Andaman Serpent Eagle, Andaman Woodpigeons, a flock of 18 Andaman Treepies and a surprise Malayan Night Heron. In Tamil Nadu and Kerala we had memorable encounters with Painted Bush Quail, Red Spurfowl, White-bellied Minivet, White-bellied Treepie, Black-and-orange Flycatchers, Nilgiri Blue Robin, Kerala and Black-chinned Laughingthrushes, Nilgiri Pipit and Nilgiri Woodpigeon, finding all but a handful of the regional endemics despite struggling with heavy rain and a strike. In Sri Lanka we cleaned up all of the 35 known endemics, with the Red-faced Malkoha taking the longest to find, yet Ceylon Spurfowl and Ceylon Scaly Thrush both showed atypically well and we had great looks at Ceylon Whistling-thrush. From the very first evening of the tour, the theme of nightbirds featured strongly. In total we recorded 15 species of Owl, with 23 individuals of 14 species seen, 15 of which were in daytime! In addition we saw five species of Nightjar, and three Ceylon Frogmouths. From the Andamans we had great encounters with Andaman and Hume’s Hawk Owls, Andaman and Oriental Scops Owls, Andaman Barn Owl and Andaman Nightjar. -

The phytoconstituents present in fruits were isolated by soxhlet extraction with methanol. The compounds were separated by column chromatography and characterized by chemical and spectroscopic methods. These compounds were identified as sesquiterpenoids and aliphatic amides containing carbonyl and hydroxyl functionalities namely,5,8‐dihydroxy‐12‐methyl‐2‐oxo‐6‐(prop‐1'‐en‐2'‐yl)‐3,11‐ dioxatetracyclo,dodecane‐7carboxylicacid(CompoundA1),1-hydroxy-14 (2'‐hydroxypropan‐2'‐yl)‐13‐methyl‐4,7,10‐ trioxapentacyclo,tetradecane‐6,11‐dione (CompoundA2) & Methyl 1, 6 – dihydroxy‐2‐methyl‐5‐oxo‐10‐(prop‐1'‐en‐2'‐ yl)‐4,8‐dioxatetracyclo,dodecane‐11‐carboxylate (CompoundA3) and two aliphatic amides namely (2Z,4Z)‐N‐ methyltetracosa‐2, 4‐dienamide (Compound A4)& N –Ethyl-5-O -훽-d –Glucopyranosyl pentanamide (CompoundA5) were isolated and characterized. Important sightings include Blue Gem Poritia Methods erycinoides elsiei, Square-band Brownie Miletis nymphys porus, Plain Plushblue Flos apidanus ahamus, Blue Royal Ancema carmentalis, Study area Elwes Silverline Spindasis elwesi, Artipe skinneri, etc. The Panbari Reserve Forest (26036’N & 93030’E) is protected under the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) Keywords: Butterfly diversity, Kaziranga, Lycaenidae, northeastern India, Panbari Reserve. as its fourth addition (Images 1a,b & 2). The average elevation of the forest is around 90m. The altitude however ranges from 70–300 m. The reserve is very close to National Highway 37 (NH37) on the Guwahati- The Lycaenidae (Blues) butterfly diversity in low Jorhat route. The reserve falls between Golaghat and elevation forests of Panbari Reserve, Kaziranga - West Karb Anglong (KA) districts of Assam. To the north of Karbi Hills, upper Assam is reported in this paper. The Framework Species Approach to Forest Restoration: Using Functional Traits As Predictors of Species Performance
- 1 - The Framework Species Approach to forest restoration: using functional traits as predictors of species performance. Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy by Hannah Betts July 2013 - 2 - - 3 - Abstract Due to forest degradation and loss, the use of ecological restoration techniques has become of particular interest in recent years. One such method is the Framework Species Approach (FSA), which was developed in Queensland, Australia. The Framework Species Approach involves a single planting (approximately 30 species) of both early and late successional species. Species planted must survive in the harsh conditions of an open site as well as fulfilling the functions of; (a) fast growth of a broad dense canopy to shade out weeds and reduce the chance of forest fire, (b) early production of flowers or fleshy fruits to attract seed dispersers and kick start animal-mediated seed distribution to the degraded site. The Framework Species Approach has recently been used as part of a restoration project in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park in northern Thailand by the Forest Restoration Research Unit (FORRU) of Chiang Mai University. FORRU have undertaken a number of trials on species performance in the nursery and the field to select appropriate species. However, this has been time-consuming and labour- intensive. It has been suggested that the need for such trials may be reduced by the pre-selection of species using their functional traits as predictors of future performance. Here, seed, leaf and wood functional traits were analysed against predictions from ecological models such as the CSR Triangle and the pioneer concept to assess the extent to which such models described the ecological strategies exhibited by woody species in the seasonally-dry tropical forests of northern Thailand. -

The Radiation of Satyrini Butterflies (Nymphalidae: Satyrinae): A

Arenales 1256, Apartado 14-0434, Lima-14, Peru 3Laboratory of Genetics, Department of Biology, University of Turku, 20014 Turku, Finland Received 24 February 2009; accepted for publication 1 September 2009 We have inferred the most comprehensive phylogenetic hypothesis to date of butterflies in the tribe Satyrini. In order to obtain a hypothesis of relationships, we used maximum parsimony and model-based methods with 4435 bp of DNA sequences from mitochondrial and nuclear genes for 179 taxa (130 genera and eight out-groups). We estimated dates of origin and diversification for major clades, and performed a biogeographic analysis using a dispersal–vicariance framework, in order to infer a scenario of the biogeographical history of the group. We found long-branch taxa that affected the accuracy of all three methods. Moreover, different methods produced incongruent phylogenies. We found that Satyrini appeared around 42 Mya in either the Neotropical or the Eastern Palaearctic, Oriental, and/or Indo-Australian regions, and underwent a quick radiation between 32 and 24 Mya, during which time most of its component subtribes originated. Several factors might have been important for the diversification of Satyrini: the ability to feed on grasses; early habitat shift into open, non-forest habitats; and geographic bridges, which permitted dispersal over marine barriers, enabling the geographic expansions of ancestors to new environ- ments that provided opportunities for geographic differentiation, and diversification. -

A New Subspecies of Aemona Lena Atkinson, 1871 from S. Yunnan, China

Yunnan, China (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae) by SONG-YUN LANG received 26.XI.2016 Abstract: A new subspecies, Aemona lena houae subspec. nov. from Pu’er, Southern Yunnan Province, China, is descri- bed and illustrated in this paper. Introduction: The genus Aemona HEWITSON, [1868] (Morphinae: Amathusiini) was reviewed by NIshIMURA (1999) based upon typical materials kept in the Natural History Museum, London, and two species were recognised by him, viz. A. amathusia (HEWITSON, 1867) and A. lena ATKINSON, 1871. Soon afterwards, DEVYATKIN & MONASTYRSKII (2004, 2008) and DEVYATKIN (2007) studied A. amathusia (HEWITSON) again in a more meticulous way and additionally re- cognised 7 species and 1 subspecies similar to A. amathusia (HEWITSON) and thereafter MONASTYRSKII (2011) divided Aemona into two species group, viz. amathusia-group and lena-group. Aemona lena ATKINSON was described, based upon specimen collected by ANDERSON from S.-W. Yunnan [Momien = Tengchong (ANDERSON, 1876)] and additional 5 subspecies were described by TYTLER (1926, 1939), they are A. l. haynei TYTLER, 1926 from Maymyo, N. Shan States, A. l. kalawrica TYTLER, 1939 from Kalaw, S. Shan States, A. l. karennia TYTLER, 1939 from Thandaung, Karen Hills, A. l. kentunga TYTLER, 1939 from Loimwe in the extreme south-east of the Southern Shan States, and A. l. salweena TYTLER, 1939 from Papun, Mal-hong-song, Salween District, Upper Tenasserim and W. Thailand (Melamung and Bangkok). NIshIMURA (1999) sunk all subspecific names mentioned above described byT YTLER to junior synonyms of A. -

Sri Lanka Woodpigeon (all photos by D.Farrow unless otherwise stated) SOUTHERN INDIA and SRI LANKA (WITH ANDAMANS ISLANDS EXTENSION) 25 OCTOBER – 19 NOVEMBER 2016 LEADER: DAVE FARROW This years’ tour to Southern India and Sri Lanka was once again a very successful and enjoyable affair. A wonderful suite of endemics were seen, beginning with our extension to the Andaman Islands where we were able to find 20 of the 21 endemics, with Andaman Scops and Walden’s Scops Owls, Andaman and Hume’s Hawk Owls leading the way, Andaman Woodpigeon and Andaman Cuckoo Dove, good looks at 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: South India and Sri Lanka 2016 www.birdquest-tours.com Andaman Crake, plus all the others with the title ‘Andaman’ (with the exception of the Barn Owl) and a rich suite of other birds such as Ruddy Kingfisher, Oriental Pratincole, Long-toed Stint, Long-tailed Parakeets and Mangrove Whistler. In Southern India we birded our way from the Nilgiri Hills to the lowland forest of Kerala finding Painted and Jungle Bush Quail, Jungle Nightjar, White-naped and Heart-spotted Woodpeckers, Malabar Flameback, Malabar Trogons, Malabar Barbet, Blue-winged Parakeet, Grey-fronted Green Pigeons, Nilgiri Woodpigeon, Indian Pitta (with ten seen on the tour overall), Jerdon's Bushlarks, Malabar Larks, Malabar Woodshrike and Malabar Whistling Thrush, Black-headed Cuckooshrike, Black-and- Orange, Nilgiri, Brown-breasted and Rusty-tailed Flycatchers, Nilgiri and White-bellied Blue Robin, Black- chinned and Kerala Laughingthrushes, Dark-fronted Babblers, Indian Rufous Babblers, Western Crowned Warbler, Indian Yellow Tit, Indian Blackbird, Hill Swallow, Nilgiri Pipit, White-bellied Minivet, the scarce Yellow-throated and Grey-headed Bulbuls, Flame-throated and Yellow-browed Bulbuls, Nilgiri Flowerpecker, Loten's Sunbird, Black-throated Munias and the stunning endemic White-bellied Treepie. -
