The array is located near the central segment of the New Madrid Seismic Zone. The thick unlithified sediment overburden has the potential to influence earthquake ground motions; understanding how these sediments affect ground motion is the overall goal of the CUSSO array. -

Schweig United States Geological Survey and CERI, The University of Memphis, Memphis, Tennessee 38152 KEYWORDS: continental rifts, great earthquakes, paleoseismology ABSTRACT Continental North America's greatest earthquake sequence struck on the western frontier of the United States. The frontier was not then California but the valley of the continent's greatest river, the Mississippi, and the sequence was the New Madrid earthquakes of the winter of 1811-1812. Their described impacts on the land and the river were so dramatic as to produce widespread modem disbelief. However, geological, geophysical, and historical research, carried out mostly in the past two decades, has verified much in the historical accounts. The sequence included at least six (possibly nine) events of estimated moment magnitude M . 7 and two of M @ 8. The faulting was in the intruded crust of a failed intracontinental rift, beneath the saturated alluvium of the river valley, and its violent shaking resulted in massive and extensive liquefaction. The largest earthquakes ruptured at least six (and possibly more than seven) intersecting fault segments, one of which broke the surface as a thrust fault that disrupted the bed of the Mississippi River in at least 2 (and possibly four) places. ... it is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. Mid America Earthquake Center Final Report for SG-4 Characterization of Active Faults in the New Madrid Seismic Zone By Roy Van Arsdale and Michael Ellis Center for Earthquake Research and Information The University of Memphis Characterization of Active Faults in the New Madrid Seismic Zone This is a final report that discusses the results of the Mid America Earthquake Center study SG-4 entitled, Characterization of Active Faults in the New Madrid Seismic Zone. Part one is entitled Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic Geology of the New Madrid seismic zone and Part two is entitled Forward Modeling of the Rupture Scenario of the 1811-1812 New Madrid Earthquakes. Part one discusses the geology of the New Madrid seismic zone and provides a geologic framework within which seismological, fault, and engineering characteristics are constrained. Part one also presents a tectonic model for the New Madrid seismic zone wherein the upper Mississippi Embayment is undergoing regional differential uplift. This differential uplift appears to be responsible for different faults becoming active and deactivated through time and thus provides us with a better understanding of fault behavior through time and space. Part two of this report illustrates potential rupture scenarios for the 1811-1812 earthquake sequence. Scenarios are based on the numerical modeling of a combination of historical and geological descriptions of ground deformation after the three main earthquakes. The preferred rupture scenarios suggest to us that the currently aseismic Bootheel lineament was the location of the first main rupture, and that subsequent ruptures involved the currently seismic portions of the New Madrid seismic zone. -
