SAINT COLUMBKILLE PARISH in Fort Myers, Inc. CONNECTIONS Love Brings People Together - Charity Brings Christians Together Love Brings People Together - Charity Brings Christians Together The Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time August 23, 2020

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.

Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

Page 6 Special Spiritual Celebration Nativity of Blessed Mary 8:00 Mass and Presentation for Our Lady of Charity

On September 8 the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated worldwide but in particular, for , it is the advocation of Mary as “Our Lady of Charity.” In 2016 Benedict XV named Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre as 's patron saint. In 1612 The image in her shrine is thought to have been brought by Spanish colonists from Illescas, a province in Toledo, Spain to El Cobre Cuba. According to legend, Spanish captains brought Marian images with them for protection at sea. Two brothers, and an African child, set out to sea from Cuba. A terrible storm arose, nearly capsizing their tiny boat. The child was wearing a medal of the Virgin Mary, and the men began to pray to her. Suddenly, the skies cleared, the storm was gone and they were saved. After proclaiming the news back in Cuba, a small chapel was built in Mary’s honor. The present figure of the and Child is in the National Shrine Basilica in El Cobre, Cuba. The feast day of Our Lady of Charity is September 8, the Solemn Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The figure is 16” tall with a head of clay. Her current robes, embroidered with gold and silver include the national shield of Cuba. The statue is on a pedestal above the altar in the El Cobre basilica. Our Lady of Charity is one of Cuba’s most treasured figures. She represents hope and salvation in the face of desperation and misfortune.

Thanks and the best to you! Page 8 Invitaton Te Search for God, Self and Church I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY

What are the “marks” of the church? In the Creed of Nicea we confess that the church is one, holy, catholic and apostolic. These are the four marks or signs of church identity.

How are the marks of the church defined? This one refers to the unity of Catholics, who are bonded together by Christ in his Spirit with shared beliefs and values. “The highest exemplar and source of this mystery is the unity, in the Trinity of Persons, of one God, the Father and the Son in the Holy Spirit” (Catechism, 813). This unity also is a goal yet to be achieved as we strive to become a people of one mind and heart in God. Moreover, the church seeks the goal in ecumenism, of unity with all Christian churches. Holy: The Holy Spirit is the holiness of the church: our union with the Holy Spirit engenders holiness in each of us, seen most dramatically in saints and mystics. It also is evidenced in the striving of ordinary people to live loving, holy and worthwhile lives. Catholic: “The Church is Catholic because Christ is present in her. ‘Where there is Christ Jesus, there is the Catholic Church’” (Catechism, 830). The word catholic means universal. Our church has heard Christ’s call to bring the good news of salvation to all nations and continues to fulfill this mission. Apostolic: Our church was founded on the apostles, the witnesses chosen and sent by Christ himself. It is apostolic also because it guards and transmits the teaching of the apostles under the guidance of the Spirit. Thirdly, the church is apostolic since it is taught, sanctified and guided by their successors, the and bishops, and the priests who assist them (cf. Catechism 857).
