Charity Maze Runner Book 2: The Scorch Trials James Dashner Reviewed by: Ethan Dossey, age 13 Star Teen Book Reviewer of Be The Star You Are! Charity www.bethestaryouare.org The second book of the Maze Runner Trilogy was just as good as the first. But instead of being a puzzle like The Maze, they now have instructions to cross the Scorch (the area where the Sun Flare hit) and make it to the other end of it. Will all of them make it alive? What challenges will they face? The first challenge that they faced was that there were people all over the Scorch. Now these aren’t your normal people, these are people infected with a mind-controlling disease called the Flare. It literally turns them into zombies so they don’t feel pain, are super strong, and would kill you and eat you if you were near. That is one of the main problems. Another challenge that they face is that they are racing against time. As long as they are out there in the Scorch they too are becoming infected with the Flare. The Flare’s mind-control process speeds up the more you use your brain. Everybody on the trip across the Flare has to think a lot about things that others don’t have to, making them very susceptible to the disease. This was one of the better books I’ve read because I liked the adventure in it and the foreshadowing James Dashner used. I think this book would be good for 10 and up. It has some creepy parts in it and some sad ones but overall it fits perfectly into the storyline. .

The dystopian theme much favored in the book market receiving international attention and appreciation is present in a large number of novels for the adult and the adolescent. Dystopia, as a sub-genre of science fiction, has strongly affected young adult (YA) literature. The Maze Runner trilogy (2009-2011), written by James Dashner, is a popular dystopian fiction with almost all-male supporting heroes. In the present paper, quest in Dashner’s trilogy is investigated in order to analyze the adventure in terms of Joseph Campbell’s views of hero’s journey, including the steps from the very first volume to the third in order to explore the archetype of journey in an adventure taking place in the future fictional world. Characters in this trilogy go through many difficulties to survive, and they pass through the rite of the passage each facing a crisis. A major conclusion the research arrives at is that there is more of an inner change in the young characters than an instant effect on their environment; however, they will be ready for the future.

Surrounding the boys’ new home is a Maze which, despite exploring every day, no Glader has ever solved. But when the boys stop receiving their regular supplies and the monsters – known as Grievers – living in the Maze begin attacking the Glade each night, the boys know that solving the Maze has become not just their only way home, but their only chance to survive.

  • CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of Study Literature Can
CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of Study Literature can be defined as a creative work of art, an object that an artist makes (Grace, 1965: 55). Several of literary products offer pleasure and benefit to the readers. Such as, novel, poem, short story, etc. by reading these literary products, the readers can take some lessons because usually the authors put a message in their works. Otherwise, through reading a literary work, the readers will have more knowledge about the essence of life. If the readers understood the meaning of the message in the works deeply they would be wiser in their life. The author of literature expresses human problems and human lives through the literature. Literature, in its broadest sense, is any written work; etymologically the term derives from Latinliteratura/litteratura "writing formed with letters", although some definitions include spoken or sung texts. More restrictively, it is writing that possesses literary merit, and language that foregrounds literariness, as opposed to ordinary language. Literature can be classified according to whether it is fiction or non-fiction and whether it is poetry or prose; it can be further distinguished according to major forms such as the novel, short story or drama; and works are often categorized according to historical periods or their adherence to certain aesthetic features or expectations (genre). Literature has a close relationship with human life, Swingewood and Laurenson (1972: 13) argue that literature is reflecting various fact and social phenomena and problem in society, like: class structure, conflict family, relationship, a possibility divorce, friendship and population phenomena that actually happened in society.

AN ECOCRITICAL ANALYSIS OF NATURE AND CULTURE IN THE MAZE RUNNER TRILOGY NOVEL BY JAMES DASHNER A Thesis Submitted to Faculty of Letters and Humanities In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Strata One (S1) ARDHA PRIMA TAHIER 1113026000044 ENGLISH LETTERS DEPARTMENT FACULTY OF LETTERS AND HUMANITIES STATE ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY SYARIF HIDAYATULLAH JAKARTA 2017 ABSTRACT Ardha Prima Tahier, An Ecocritical Analysis of Nature and Culture in The Maze Runner Trilogy Novel by James Dashner. A Thesis: English Language and Literature Department, Faculty of Letters and Humanities, State Islamic University Syarif Hidayatullah, 2017. The research aims to reveal how nature is presented, what kind of human attitude the characters demonstrate, and how the interconnection between nature and culture is depicted in The Maze Runner trilogy novel. To achieve the purpose, the researcher investigates five environmental aspects within the trilogy: the representation of nature, nature exploration, the interconnection of nature and culture, technology, and political impact on nature. By applying ecocritical approach and descriptive qualitative method, the analysis discovers a quite deep environmental value proposed by The Maze Runner trilogy that nature is represented through a metaphorical object of home; the characters then demonstrate a lack of human attitude towards nature viewed from their explorations on nature; and the interconnection between nature and culture is based on the examination of an inappropriate encounter between a desert and a city which leads to the absence of a boundary between the two interconnected concepts, and how a totalitarian government induces disrespect attitude towards nature by misusing advanced technology. Hopefully, this research is able to acquaint Ecocriticism as a compelling theory of literary criticism, and most importantly, contribute to the preservation of nature through academic way.
