  • Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant Seberang Perai, Malaysia
Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant Seberang Perai, Malaysia 1. Background Information Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant (SDWTP) is located at Seberang Perai and occupies about 13 hectares of land. SDWTP is the most important WTP in the Penang as it supplies 80% of the total volume of treated water to Penang. SDWTP was first commissioned in the year 1973 and after series of upgrading in 1994, 1999, 2004, 2011 and 2013, it now has the design capacity of 1,113,792 m3/day . SDWTP usually draws water from Muda River as a primary source and Mengkuang Dam as the secondary source which is the largest dam in the Penang. Currently, the Mengkuang Dam is temporarily decommissioned since February 2014 to facilitate its expansion project. SDWTP is owned and operated by Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang (PBAPP). SDWTP also serves as the control center for PBAPP’s “on-line” supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system to facilitate remote operation. SCADA gathers real-time data from remote location and empowers the operator to remotely control equipment and conditions. The plant operates at 3 shifts per day. The general information of SDWTP is shown in Table 1. In this technological era, lighting fixtures are can be seen anywhere in the city to accommodate its specific functions or to achieve some purposes in any forms and colours. The patterns and arrangements of the lighting fixtures on the buildings and structures at night creating a sense of art which emphasizes the nature or the potential of the buildings. Nowadays, lighting designers tend to put more lighting fixtures into their design to give a better outlook and as an attraction for tourism at night. In some manners, light art is like a rose that has thorns on it. The public nowadays appreciate the beauty of light art without realizing the harm that stays under the exposure of colourful bright light designs.

Such claims have not been fully substantiated by systematic research, however, particularly when dealing with high rise office blocks [i]. This paper presents the performance of a high rise bio-climatic office block designed by Ken Yeang and compares it with that of a conventional one. Both case study buildings are located in the Island of Penang, Malaysia with similar outdoor conditions. Indoor environmental parameters have been measured using portable equipment and user’s perceptions have been recorded using structured questionnaires. The paper presents the rating of a comparative analysis of the measured indoor temperature and user’s perception in both office buildings. • Flood Inundation Analysis in Penang Island (Malaysia) Based on Insar Maps of Land Subsidence and Local Sea Level Scenarios
water Article Flood Inundation Analysis in Penang Island (Malaysia) Based on InSAR Maps of Land Subsidence and Local Sea Level Scenarios Guosheng Gao 1, Lim Hwee San 1,* and Yidan Zhu 2 1 School of Physics, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang 11800, Malaysia; [email protected] 2 School of Housing, Building, and Planning, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang 11800, Malaysia; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: Penang Island is an important economic center in Malaysia and most of its population live in the coastal areas. Although previous studies have shown that it is vulnerable to rising sea levels, the combination of sea-level rise and local land subsidence would be devastating. Therefore, the objective of this study is to apply the local land subsidence model to estimate the inundated areas which relate to sea level rise by 2100. Land subsidence is quantified by the SBAS-InSAR technique on the basis of Sentinel-1 radar images for both ascending and descending tracks. For the first time, the geostatistical analyst method is used to merge the different track results and create the land subsidence models, the results show this method can maximize land deformation fields and minimize deformation errors. According to the land deformation results, all of the coastlines in the east of the island have differing medium levels of subsidence, especially in reclaimed lands and building areas. Lastly, the bathtub model is used to quantify the inundated areas by combing regional sea-level rise projection and local land subsidence models under CoastalDEM in 2100 projections. • Characterization and Geotechnical Properties of Penang Residual Soils with Emphasis on Landslides
American Journal of Environmental Sciences 2 (4): 121-128, 2006 ISSN 1553-345X © 2006 Science Publications Characterization and Geotechnical Properties of Penang Residual Soils with Emphasis on Landslides 1Fauziah Ahmad, 1Ahmad Shukri Yahaya and 2Mohd Ahmadullah Farooqi 1Associate professor, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, 14300 Nibong Tebal, Penang, Malaysia 2PhD. Student Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, 14300 Nibong Tebal, Penang, Malaysia Abstract: The predominantly hilly terrain of Penang Island combined with average maximum daily temperatures ranging between 27-35oC and peak rainfall as high as 647 cm makes the overall area potentially susceptible to landslips. Over the recent past construction industry has shown a rapid growth mainly due to increase in the inflow of international tourists and other economic reasons. Eventually, the magnitude of disaster associated with landslides has also increased and that is one of the major concerns of engineering geologists and geotechnical engineers. With this background this paper attempts to characterize the largely granitic residual soils of Penang Island by discussing the nature, structural features, engineering behavior and field properties of soil samples extracted from 8 sites. These sites are distinctly chosen from a database of 31 sites for they are located over different prime geological formations. The mean values of various design properties at different depths are calculated and plotted to identify the property trend with depth and important behavioral features relevant to landslides are discussed. Similarly, compression index values are plotted against initial void ratio and liquid limit separately and resulting correlations are compared with the established ones. Correlations given by Azzous are found to hold good. Lastly, in the light of the lessons learnt from the past landslides and the current characterization results some improvements regarding slope instability problem are discussed.

As years have passed it is a challenge to differentiate the genuineness of landmasses created by natural geological formations or by coastal reclamation projects. An account is given of the environmental impact of solid wastes used for reclaiming land in coastal areas of Penang and of the impact of a major sewage outfall in the western channel. Leaching of heavy metals was shown to be one of the main sources of contamination from solid wastes. This paper presents eight lines of ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys and sediment analysis to identify the anthropogenic interventions that shaped the urban landscape of Penang Island by excavations, filling, and embankment construction along the coastline and differentiate it from the natural one. The surveys were implemented in two locations, the Batu Ferringhi area, representing the natural coastline, and Persiaran Bayan Indah (the Queensbay Citation: Ulfa, Y.; Jia, T.Y.; Che Yaziz, Mall area), representing the anthropogenic coastal landform.
